El Calafate, Patagonia

Explore Los Glaciares National Park from El Calafate, Argentina.

It seems that every town in South America wants to be the capital of something, and El Calafate's tag line is that it's the self-proclaimed Capital of Glaciers. Located on the southern shore of Lago Argentino on the edge of Los Glaciares National Park, El Calafate is a small village surrounded by intensely beautiful wilderness that is indeed a perfect base for exploring the nearby glaciers. With a population of about 7,000, El Calafate is the nearest town to the popular Perito Moreno Glacier and features all the creature comforts travellers expect, including a small airport. For those of us not happy just to gaze at the stunning views from a café, there are hot air balloon trips, horseback riding, quad bikes, fishing, and of course hiking available.

This incredible outdoor adventure town got its name from one of Patagonia's most famous plants, the calafate, which is a bush with exquisite little yellow flowers and wood said to have considerable medicinal properties.

You'll have plenty of time to explore El Calafate when you spend 3 nights in this charming town on the Condor, a 14-day Patagonia adventure.

      What's The Rush?

I’m not a triathlete, but I’m in decent shape and I’m not looking to experience a place just through a bus window. I’m happy to slow down on the trail, soak it in and breathe in the fresh air.

      Leg Stretcher

Sure, I own some hiking boots, they’re even worn in, but they don’t go on long trips. I like my creature comforts and I like to give a range of activities a go.

      Earn Your Lunch

I stay active on vacation so that I can eat and drink what I like without feeling guilty. I season my trips with a little fresh exercise.

      Challenge Accepted

I’ll let my trusty guides sweat the small things, so I can focus on my goal. Getting to the top, reaching the end, achieving my dreams! Sure, it’ll be tough, but the views will be worth it.

      The Ultimate

I’ve put in the hard yards and now I get to reap the rewards. I’m a seasoned adventurer, not afraid to get my boots wet.

This trip truly was an 'active adventure', and exceeded my expectations in so many ways.
Peru is such a beautiful country, rich in history, and culture. All of our guides were superb, but Erick as our trip host absolutely made this trip worry free, a true learning experience, and SO much fun! If it's all in the details, Erick and Active covered them all and more!
I arrived as a solo traveler and left having made friends and memories that I will treasure always.
Thank you Active Adventures, until next time!

Land-based tours are the way to go!

We are so glad we chose to do an active, land-based trip rather than take a cruise ship. Staying in small hotels in the various towns on four islands and gaining an appreciation for the locals, the local food and customs was a tremendous addition to the natural beauty of the Galapagos. Knowing that we were contributing to the local economy rather than to a cruise line's bottom line felt good to us. Our guides (Lenin in Quito) and Zambo (on the Galapagos) were outstanding.

    Taste of Peru

What an amazing trip! 14 days really gives a good taste of Peru. From high elevations of Cusco, Sacred Valley and the Lares Trail to the mysticism of Macchu Picchu, on to the loud cicadas of the jungle and the floating islands and welcoming Amantai family on lake Titicaca, this is a bucket list trip that will give you a taste of Peru that will make you want to return.

    Toughest hike yet but rewarding

The "W" was one of the toughest hikes we've undertaken because of straight line steep grades and rocky trails. But when we finished we felt like we had met the challenge and all our pre-trip workouts were worth it. Our guide, Cahit, was fantastic - knowledgeable, outgoing and optimistic. The adding of mountain biking and kayaking was a nice touch!

    Like A Postcard

The mountains, glaciers and icebergs of Patagonia were some of the most incredible sites I have ever seen. Many days were like walking into a postcard. "Am I really here?" Active took the worry out of the travel and planning and our guides were incredible! Arturo made the trip and our local guides were knowledgeable and skilled - Cem and Juan were great! Thanks Active for an amazing journey!
