    Arrive in Patagonia

    #545

Welcome to Chilean Patagonia! The windswept plains of this southern region stretch on for miles, joining Chile’s rugged coastline and majestic mountain peaks into one of the world’s most awe-inspiring mountain environments, perched on the edges of the icy isthmus and fiords of the southern Pacific Ocean. This afternoon you’ll meet your trip leader and head out for lunch to a local restaurant for your first taste of Patagonia Cuisine. Afterwards, we’ll take the scenic route through the Patagonian IowIands to Puerto NataIes.

Hotel Natalino, Punta Arenas (Lunch, Dinner)

  • Day 2

    Biking in Puerto Natales

    #546

Puerto Natales is surrounded by an incredible combination of forests, mountains, glaciers, and fjords. This fusion of landscapes provides a unique environment that in turn allows us to understand the deep love the Patagonians have for their land, a land of pioneers. We’ll enjoy this fusion of colours, smells, and landscapes on our bikes, through the Patagonian forest, then following the coast of the Ultima Esperanza fjord with views of the Moore Range, Whale Hill and Mount Pratt. We’ll arrive at the Perales Ranch for a typical Patagonian lunch, the famous ‘Asado de Cordero’. The Alvarez family have been pioneers in the exploration of the Austral channels and for generations their descendants have sailed the fjords. Afterward, we’ll head back to Puerto Natales for some down time before dinner together.

Hotel Natalino, Puerto Natales (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Biking: 20 kilometers (12.4 miles)

W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience: Explore Azul Lagoon

Today we’ll begin the four-day exploration of Torres Del Paine, with amazing day treks among sheer granite peaks, snow-clad mountains, glacial lakes and the thick Magellanic forest. Our first hike will take us to Azul Lagoon, where we’ll circumnavigate the lagoon with views of the Torres del Paine towers just south of us. After lunch we’ll head back south and journey further into the park, stopping off along the way for views of Lake Nordenskjold and Lake Pehoe before arriving at Kau Rio Serrano Refugio, our accommodation for the next 4 nights.

Kau Rio Serrano, Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), 2-3 hours, elevation +/- 50 meters (164 feet)

  • Day 3 Challenging Option

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Start 'W' hike, Torres del Paine National Park

Today we’ll begin the legendary four-day ‘W’ hike, an amazing trek among sheer granite peaks, snow-clad mountains, glacial lakes and the thick Magellanic forest. We’ll follow the Rio Ascensio Valley as it winds its way up to the park’s namesake. As we reach the top of the boulder field near the end of our hike, we’ll come face to face with one of the most famous mountain landscapes in the world – above you, three mammoth granite peaks rise like tombstones from the rugged hills and snow-coated mountains of Patagonia to pierce the sky – Torres del Paine (‘Towers of Blue’). At a height of about 900 meters (3000 feet), they are believed to be the highest natural cliff faces in the world. Tonight you’ll sleep well at a cozy refugio (mountain lodge), a welcome sight after a full day’s hike. Only a light day pack is required as it's a return hike. There are shorter options available.

Refugio Chileno Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 22 kilometers (13.7 miles), 7-9 hours, elevation +/- 770 meters (2,524 feet)

W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience: Hike French Valley

After a scrumptious breakfast, we’ll head back to Lake Pehoe where we’ll hop on a catamaran across to Refugio Paine Grande. Our hike today takes us toward the French Valley for a closer look at Los Cuernos, and at the base of the French Valley, we’ll have incredible views of ravines. It is probably one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see, with multiple glaciers cascading down its steep sides, creating a patchwork of ice and rock. We may catch a glimpse of the impressive French Glacier, the Paine Massif and Cuernos granite towers in the background. We’ll enjoy lunch along the way before hiking back down on the same trail, making our way back to the refugio and onward on the catamaran to the refugio with time to relax before dinner.

Kau Rio Serrano, Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 16 kilometers (10 miles), 4-5 hours, elevation +/- 146 meters (477 feet)

  • Day 4 Challenging Option

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Hike to Los Cuernos, Torres del Paine National Park

It’s an easier hike today, as we contour around the northern shore of Lake Nordenskjold, a glacial lake in the heart of the national park. As we head around the lake, we’ll start to see glimpses of Los Cuernos – Spanish for ‘The Horns’ – three fantastically sculpted grey and white sedimentary and granite peaks rising 244 meters (800 feet). The intense turquoise hue of the lake and the starkness of the mountains make for spectacular photo opportunities. This evening, we’ll stay in the shadow of the mountains at Refugio Los Cuernos.

Refugio Los Cuernos, Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience: Hike near Grey & Tyndall Glaciers

You’re in one of the most beautiful locations on the planet, so take your time today and take it all in – enjoying breakfast at your leisure. There’s an opportunity to go for a hike this morning or you can simply relax at the refugio and enjoy the views from the river’s edge. Lunch will be at Kau Rio Serrano Refugio before the afternoon’s activity. After we regroup, we’ll walk from our refugio down to the Serrano River’s edge where we’ll hike east along the winding riverside. The trail will take us to a lookout point where we’ll have views of the Grey and Tyndall glaciers. Tyndall Glacier, also known as Geike Glacier, is one of the largest in southern Patagonia, named after the Irish glaciologist John Tyndall. The hike will take most of the afternoon, then we’ll return by vehicle to the lodge in time for dinner.

Kau Rio Serrano, Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Kayaking: 2-3 hours
    Hiking: 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), 2-3 hours, elevation +/- 436 meters (1,430 feet)
Notes: Optional: Kayak Lake Grey (extra fee applies): We’ll meet our specialist kayak guides at the inlet of Serrano River, and they’ll match you with a kayak and provide all the necessary equipment for a unique way to explore Lake Grey. We’ll enjoy the magic of paddling around the icebergs that have broken away from the glacier and you’ll be in awe of the unique views of the Paine mountains and their impressive granite walls. After we return to shore, we’ll head back to the refugio for lunch before our afternoon hike.

  • Day 5 Challenging Option

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Hike French Valley, Torres del Paine National Park

We’ll rise with the sun this morning to begin our hike up French Valley for a closer look at Los Cuernos. This ravine is probably one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see, with multiple glaciers cascading down its steep sides, creating a patchwork of ice and rock. The track steepens as we ascend a ridge line to the upper French Valley past waterfalls and mountain tarns. At the top, we’ll have incredible views of a massive natural amphitheater, filled with the awesome French Glacier, the Paine Massif and Cuernos granite towers. This afternoon, we’ll hike to Refugio Paine Grande.

W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience: Hike Los Condores & Los Cuernos

After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Weber Bridge, which crosses the confluence of Lake Pehoe and Lake Del Toro, where we’ll start our hike up to Mirador Condor. We’ll hike through a small valley on the Lazo-Weber trail, crossing an ancient Lenga Forest on our way up to a lookout point. The Lenga tree, nothofagus pumilio, is a member of the beech family and has been staked amidst fierce winds and a tough climate. Along the exposed subalpine slopes that mark the upper reaches of its habitable range, the Lenga tree sometimes grows into wild, twisted, wind-blown shapes. At the top, we’ll have incredible views of the entire Torres del Paine mountain range as well as Lakes Honda, Sarmiento & Verde. We’ll head back down, enjoying lunch along the way and once we reach the end of the trail, we’ll travel north toward Lake Nordenskjold. Our afternoon hike will take us to Mirador Cuernos, lying in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park, which is the best spot to view Los Cuernos, ‘The Horns’. We’ll stop off at Salto Grande along the way, a very picturesque waterfall that flows out from Lake Icefield, it is part of the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water and forms a natural dam connecting Lakes Nordenskjold and Pahoe through the Paine river. The water level on the southern side of the lake can rise up to 30 meters (90 feet) above the level of the main lake. We’ll make our way back down the trail and on to Nash Refugio for our last night’s dinner on the W trek.

Kau Rio Serrano, Torres del Paine (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Hike to Refugio Grey, kayak Lake Grey

Grey Glacier is a 200-meter (650 feet) high wall of ice that marks the northern end of Lake Grey. This is one of the largest calving glaciers in the world, with giant ice cliffs that plummet into the depths of the lake. Our hike finishes at the lake, where we’ll meet our specialist kayak guides. They’ll match you with a kayak and provide all the necessary equipment for a unique way to explore Lake Grey and enjoy amazing views of the glacier and icebergs. When we return to shore, we’ll head to Refugio Grey, where we spend our last night in Torres del Paine National Park.

We’ll depart Nash Refugio for the last time this morning, making our way north toward Lake Grey. We’ll stop off at Rio Pingo where we’ll begin our morning hike, Mirador Ferriera! The hike is challenging with a short, steep climb up though you’ll be rewarded with a tremendous view of the Grey glacier and the small icebergs you may have paddled amongst a few days prior. After we’re back down from the hike, we’ll catch the boat across Lake Grey, taking in views of the surrounding mountains before docking at Grey Hotel to pick-up the W-trek hikers! Once we’ve re-grouped, we’ll return across the lake and head back to Puerto Natales, where we started our journey four days ago, for a well-earned rest and another tasty meal together.

When we complete our boat trip, we’ll head back to Puerto Natales, where we started our hike four days ago, to re-group with the W Trek day hikers, and enjoy a well-earned rest and another tasty meal together.

    Travel to El Calafate

    #552

Welcome to Argentina! Today we’ll cross the border to the home of Tango, Evita Peron and Diego Maradona. We’ll journey north to El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park, one of the greatest wilderness areas in South America. It’s also one of the most diverse – in addition to the vast mountain ranges and glaciers, it’s home to forests of guindo, lenga (a type of beech tree) and ñirre scrub, as well as a multitude of lakes and rivers. We’ll arrive in El Calafate in the afternoon, so you’ll have the rest of the day to chill out on the shores of Lago Argentino, South America’s third largest lake, with a surface area of over 1,600 square kilometers (617 square miles). You can relax and enjoy your surroundings, or you can head off on one of the many hikes in the area. A particular favorite of ours is the short walk to Laguna Nimes, a renowned bird sanctuary where geese, ducks and flamingos make their home. For dinner tonight we find that most people want to explore their options or have an early dinner, though of course, you’re welcome to join your guide for dinner too!

Patagonia Queen Hotel, El Calafate (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Notes: NOTE: The 8-day trip option ends today in Puerto Natales. We can arrange a transfer back to Punta Arenas if required (additional cost applies).

  • Day 9

    Visit Perito Moreno Glacier

    #553

If you thought the glaciers in Chile were amazing, today will take your breath away. We’ll get right up close to the base of Perito Moreno Glacier with a local specialist guide to watch blocks of ice crack off the glacier’s imposing terminal face and fall into the pastel-blue waters of Lago Argentino. This icefield is part of the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water and forms a natural dam to the opposite shore that separates the two halves of Lago Argentino. With no escape route, the water level on the southern side of the lake can rise up to 30 meters (90 feet) above the level of the main lake.

Patagonia Queen Hotel, El Calafate (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

  • Day 10

    Hike Mirador Laguna Torre

    #554

This morning we’ll travel to El Chalten, a charming and remote mountain village, known for its amazing hiking and mountaineering opportunities that quite literally begin on your doorstep. From the heart of this rapidly-growing outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, you can see the tips of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre peaks, as well as the lovely Rio de las Vueltas winding its way past town. We’ll hike through Patagonian dry lands and dramatic boulder fields to Mirador Laguna Torre (Spanish for ‘Tower Lagoon Lookout’) for heart-stopping views up the Fitz Roy valley to Cerro Torre, a spectacular granite spire looming over a sprawling mass of ice. Today is a relatively relaxing day, in preparation for tomorrow’s big hike into the heart of Los Glaciares National Park!

Hotel Posada el Barranco, El Chalten (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), 1-3 hours, elevation +/- 200 meters (656 feet)

  • Day 11

Hike to Laguna de los Tres

    #555

Today we’ll journey a short way to the start of an incredibly scenic hike to Campamento Poincenot. From here we can look directly up to the towering Monte Fitz Roy. You’ll find it hard to imagine that the views of the brooding Fitz Roy massif could get any better, and you can choose to stay here and take in the views or make the steep climb up to Laguna de Los Tres, at the foot of the glacier. All of a sudden, if you’ve chosen to go on ahead, you’ll reach the crest and be greeted by stunning close-up views of Monte Fitz Roy looming above a glacial lake. Today is a real highlight and the views are amazing, no matter how far you get!

Hotel Posada el Barranco, El Chalten (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 22.8 kilometers (14.2 miles), 7-9 hours (flexible), elevation +/- 800 meters (2,624 feet)

  • Day 12

Bike Laguna del Desierto and hike Los Huemules Reserve

    #556

Today we’ll journey north from El Chalten to Laguna del Desierto. We’ll take a great walk to a lookout beside the Lagoon to warm up the legs, and maybe get another view of Fitz Roy, before saddling up for an awesome bike ride that descends gently back toward El Chalten along an unpaved road. We’ll be riding in the valley basin of the River de las Vueltas and in several spots, the road runs alongside the river and past spectacular waterfalls. After regrouping for lunch at Los Huemules Reserve, we’ll switch back into our hiking boots for this afternoon and hike to the Blue & Green Lagoons.

  • Day 13

    Hike Lomo del Pliegue Tumbado

    #557

Today’s hike will give you a new appreciation for the incredibly huge and beautiful steep peaks of Southern Patagonia. We’ll begin our hike on the Loma del Pliegue trail bright and early, embarking on a 900-meter (3000 feet) hike to the top of the rounded lomo (hill). First, we’ll pass through the Patagonian beech forest then ascend onto the wide plateau, where the views start getting seriously beautiful. Upon reaching the summit, we’ll be greeted by one of the most incredible sights you’re ever likely to see – the towering peak of Monte Fitz Roy rising high above the Torre Glacier and Laguna Torre. Just make sure you’ve packed your wide-angle lens to take in all of this view! Later, we’ll descend the trail back down to El Chalten and head onwards to El Calafate, where over dinner we’ll celebrate one of the best hikes anywhere in the world.

"Excellent trip guides throughout the trip. Very informative, interesting, attentive and helpful individuals. Our group chose to do the W Trek with the backpacking and refugios in Torres del Paine. Completely worth it for the hiking -- just be prepared, refugios are like hostels with food. We rented equipment and it was good quality and condition. Most of the rest of the hotels on trip aren't notable -- they tend to be a mixture of moderate to budget level hotels. However, the experience of Patagonia and hiking (in all types of weather!) was perfect! read less

"No doubt this is a top destination on the "bucket-list" so many of carry around in our heads, but the Active Adventures team made this a truly outstanding experience. Our very patient Trip Leader Gustavo saw to it that we were informed ("OK, Chicos!), prepared, and well-fed before heading out for each day's adventure. The Torres and El Chalten guides clearly love what they do and where they get to work, and shared that with us. Two weeks in Patagonia got away too soon! read less

"Totally loved this trip. It was a great combination of tough backpacking for the first week and more relaxed day hikes on the second week so it was a great blend. The additional activities of the kayak, walking on the glacier and the bike ride were truly awesome. Guides were great, friendly and worked with us all as there were different levels of fitness on our team. The most surprising item for me was the food....both in the hostels and the Cafe's in town. Food in this part of the world is amazing and the choices of the guides were all excellent. Weather for us was not the best, but thats also a part of the adventure. Its a great part of the world to hike and the nature is amazing. I would highly recommend Active as your trek guides. read less

"Our trip to Patagonia was superlative in many ways. The guides were wonderful, the food was amazing and the photo ops unprecedented. But we were mostly blown away by the ever present wind! We could hike for miles to get to a viewpoint, have rain obscure the view and then the clouds would blow on by and the mountains would appear. The wind caused cancellation of our penguin boat trip at the beginning of the trip and kayaking in the middle of the trip. It caused our Grey Glacier ferry to turn around and leave the W trekkers stranded at the dock with a 3 mile hike to get to an alternative ferry. As our guide said, "I can give you a great experience but I can't give you good weather." But it WAS a great experience! The trails were interesting and often spectacular. We had enough beautiful days to outweigh the rainy ones. The guides were helpful, knowledgeable, encouraging and good company on the hiking trails. Our main guide knew the best restaurants in every town so we had outstanding dinners every night. Our group of 10 was very compatible across an age range of 34-74. We had a lot of laughs together! Everyone was exceptionally fit and had done a lot of hiking. This is not a trip for a casual hiker! We appreciated the opportunity to see so much of Patagonia, even though it meant spending time in a van on unpaved park roads. Fourteen days was a good length for the trip. We recommend it to anyone who likes to hike. read less

"Patagonia was a great trip! Amazing scenery, great guides, delicious food, and tons of activity. As always, Active fit a lot in to the two weeks we were there; far more than we would on our own. The packed itinerary and high level of activity can be a bit exhausting but activities are planned thoughtfully with lighter days following really heavy days and later mornings following early mornings so that you aren't too wiped out to enjoy yourself. The weather was pretty wild too, which we had been warned about, and for that reason, I'm not sure I'd do the trip again but I'm definitely glad to have done it once! read less

"The reports that the weather in Patagonia can be wild are certainly true. During our visit we encountered heavy wind, rain, sun, sleet, and snow.
Our guide, Cem, did a great job of keeping us on schedule and letting us know backup plans when things needed to change. The tour group size was perfect and we have lots of new great memories from the trip. Bonus, we were active enough that all the great food we ate didn't add any to the scale when we got home! read less

"This trip honestly exceeded all of my expectations. I was the only one in the group that came on my own but after the first day I did not feel that way at all. Every aspect throughout this trip was very well communicated and presented to us.
I always felt that my personal comfort and experience was most important. The scenery, geography and history of this part of the world is amazement around every corner. I feel that for the time available we experienced a wide variety of sites, history and experiences. The Refugios and hiking of the W trek were great to experience. It was also nice to get back to the wonderful accommodations and meals that were supplied by Active Adventures when we were not on the W trek for both the Chilean and Argentinian portions of the trip.
The professional and friendly guides and drivers certainly added to the experience with their combined knowledge and ability to work with the large number (13) in our group to ensure that everyone was hiking and moving along at a comfortable pace for them.
Our main guide Gustavo who was with us for the entire 14 days certainly made the trip for everyone.
His relaxed personality and infectious laugh and sense of humour always made everyone feel at ease. His comfortable command of the english language was particularly important with our group as I was the only one who knew any amount of Spanish. Gustavo knew when to keep things light and entertaining but was always there to be serious when needed and to make sure everyones needs no matter how small or large were properly attended to. There were a couple of injuries through out the trip that required outside medical attention as well as smaller situations that were taken care of in house. In either case Gustavo did what he had to do to accompany, assist and translate for those persons to ensure that they got all of the care that they required. I think I can say that Gustavo made everyone feel that he was there for them personally. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone that is looking for a great "Active Adventure" while being treated to some high end accommodations, meals and personal attention at the same time. I would add that the W trek is a great experience and I highly recommend it but is not nearly at the same level as the accommodations and meals supplied by Active Adventures directly. This was also clearly stated in the Itinerary preceding the trip so there was no surprises. For anyone that this part does not appeal to and would prefer to experience this area by staying in a nice Hotel, eating in nice restaurants for all meals and doing day trips should strongly consider the add on option B instead of the full W trek option A. Two members of our group went this route and had a great time as well with their own personal guide for the 5 days. Thank you Active Adventure for a wonderful experience all round. read less

"Everything was more than perfect and super smooth! Thanks to Gustavo that did an awesome job managing all the adventure and was super funny too! Also the local guides (Cristiano of Torres del Paine expecially) were excellent as was very good the hotel choice and the food.
I was really lucky to hike the W Trek with very good weather (even too warm) that allow me to enjoy the amazing views that Torres del Paine offers, but unfortunately the weather didn't allow to hike the Laguna de Los Tres.
The only negative (very small one), is that I would preferred to have more time on Perito Moreno glacier, maybe with the option of hiking in the glacier.
In future I would love to travel again with Active Adventure! read less

"My name is Stefania, l am a 55 year old doctor from Melbourne, Australia, l embarked on my trip to Patagonia to escape the pressures of day to day work, recharge and reconnect with nature. I travel extensively for both work and pleasure and my aim with the South American Active Adventures trip was to challenge my fitness and endurance, meet locals from both Chile and Argentina, experience their culture and meet like minded people on the trek. Unlike many in my group this was my very first hike which initially probably stressed my guide, Alvaro, but l endured and made it all the way to the finale!! I enjoy life and ALL my trips but this one will stay with me forever!Starting from the guides Alvaro (all 14 days) and Sergio (who joined us for the W trek) all the way to our drivers, our accommodation, the food and ALL my new friends on the trip, it was simply exhilarating. Alvaro had everything under control. I normally coordinate many of my trips but there was no need here. He was just brilliant - it all just happened without a glitch!! Sergio helped us do the challenging W trek. The expertise of both Alvaro and Sergio were noted as they safely guided us through the rough terrain. Both were extremely professional and knowledgeable. Visiting Punto Arenas, Puerto Natales, hiking the W then moving across to Argentina to El Calafate and El Chalten to hike Mt Fitz Roy were incredible adventures which l was lucky to share with a group that consisted of a multitude of personalities that embraced life and we all escalated the fun to a new level!! So many fun stories to tell: reading signs on the trek and allocating a different meaning to them, dancing Zumba at a refugio, singing and creating RAP songs to narrate our story. What an absolute blast!! Our accommodation was much better than what l expected. I did expect the refugios to be basic and they were. The food was amazing, in fact, it was plentiful and delicious. I am definitely booking in for another trip with Active Adventures as they encapsulate what we all should be doing with our life: STAY ACTIVE for as long as possible and be healthy. Well done!! read less

BOOKING CONDITIONS

Useful Info

Where does the trip start?

On the first day of the trip we’ll meet you at Hotel Almasur in Punta Arenas, Chile at 12pm. You are welcome to book your pre-trip stay at this hotel directly or any other hotel in Punta Arenas, though you must make your own way to Hotel Almasur at the pre-designated time.

Where does the trip end?

Your trip ends with a drop-off at the El Calafate Airport (FTE) for flights departing any time after breakfast.

What flights would you recommend?

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Punta Arenas (PUQ) by 4pm. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the city prior to your trip start.

Departure: On the last day of your trip, you can fly out from El Calafate airport any time after breakfast, and we'll drop you off before noon. If you're considering an early morning flight please let us know so we can make arrangements.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

As an Activity Level 3-4 trip, you’ll need a solid level of fitness for this trip. It’s one of our more adventurous trips, and typically, hikes range between three and six hours to complete, with longer hikes on the W-trek. So get out there with a daypack on and train so you’ll be ready to join us! While you don’t have to be extremely fit, you should be in the habit of doing regular aerobic exercise, ideally involving some up hills and down hills and carrying a pack! With some preparation before your trip begins, you’ll enjoy the active and outdoor nature of your trip all the more.

Please head to our Fitness Guide for great tips on how to prepare along with a workout plan!

How much luggage can I bring on this trip?

You’ll need one piece of luggage on your trip, plus a daypack. Your main piece of luggage can be anything from a backpack, to a sports bag with wheels or a suitcase and a good quality daypack 25-30 litres (2000 cubic inches) to use throughout the days on the trails.

If you've chosen the W-Trek Hike, you'll also require a good quality trekking pack with well-fitting shoulder and waist straps for the W-trek. Your pack should have a volume of ~60 litres (3500 cubic inches), large enough to fit your sleeping bag inside along with all your multi-day gear.

What accommodations do we stay at on this trip?

We’ve selected the accommodation for the unique character and adventuresome feel – this trip is not designed as a tour of the fanciest hotels in Patagonia. We prefer to stay in quaint, comfortable B&B’s and lodges. Things get a little more rustic when we head to the Refugio’s during the W-trek. The Refugio's are like backcountry lodges with hot showers, three course meals, bunk beds and it’s all part of a truly amazing experience! The rest of the time we stay in clean, comfortable, family-owned inns and hotels in the heart of the action.

If you've selected a single supplement for your trip, both the W-Trek Hike and W-Trek Experience portions of the trip (Days 3 – 7) are not included as no single rooms are available in the refugio's/lodges, and the single supplement price takes this into account.

We recommend bringing enough clothing to only have to do laundry once during your trip, and the best time will be after your W-trek once we return to Puerto Natales.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travelers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travelers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travelers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.

Tell me about the W-Trek Backcountry Hiking option?

This amazing trek will take you past sheer granite peaks, snow-clad mountains, glacial lakes and through thick Magellanic forest. While it might be a bit of a challenge, the rewards are well and truly worth it! The trek is close to sea level so you won’t be dealing with any altitude factors. The trail is 64 kilometres (40 miles) in total length and we average around 6 hours or 16 kilometres (10 miles) per day. The greatest elevation reached on the W-trek is 1200 metres (3900 feet) at the highest point in
the French Valley - you can go as high as you like. The trails are very well maintained so finding your way is never a problem. You’ll only be carrying the gear needed for the 5 days, your excess gear and luggage will be stored securely for you in Puerto Natales.

During the W-trek in Torres del Paine National Park you’ll be spending four nights in rustic mountain lodges, known locally as refugio’s. Each refugio sleeps 30-50 people with shared bunk rooms of up to 6-10 people, shared bathrooms and hot showers. You’ll have a mattress with a pillow and you’ll use your sleeping bag – if you’re a light sleeper we recommend ear plugs and an eye mask to get a good night’s sleep, it’s all part of the adventure! Meals are served in the restaurant and there’s a bar that accepts pesos, dollars, euros and credit cards if you fancy a drink. The refugio’s have only basic heating facilities.
On occasion it may be the case the refugio is full, and in this instance we’ll camp out for the night in this amazing location. We’ll pitch your tent near the refugio so you’ll still have full use of the facilities.
NOTE: Sometimes the generators are turned off overnight therefore if you’re bringing a CPAP, it will need to be battery
operated.

Do you provide any gear for the W-Trek Backcountry Hiking option?

You’ll need a good quality trekking pack with a volume of ~60 litres (3500 cubic inches) for the W-Trek hike, large enough to fit your sleeping bag inside along with all your multi-day gear. You’ll also need a nice warm sleeping bag for the W-trek, something rated down to at least ~0°C (32°F) is ideal.

We can provide both items for an extra fee, along with Hiking poles which we highly recommend. Please select these items on your Travel Wallet so we know you require them.

Is tipping expected in Patagonia?

Most people do choose to tip their Active Adventures trip leader and USD$20 per day, per guest, per trip leader (and US$10 each per day for your W-trek guide if you’re going to Southern Patagonia). During your Active Adventures trip, your trip leader will take care of all included restaurants and service tips for you.

For other restaurants or services during your time in Patagonia, 5-10% is a typical gratuity amount.

Tell me about the W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience option?

An alternative option is to spend five days exploring the incredible Torres del Paine National Park with amazing day trips that will take you from sheer granite peaks and snow-clad mountains, to glacial lakes and thick Magellanic forests. You’ll spend all four nights at Rio Kau Serrano, a comfortable lodge from where you’ll head out each day to explore some of the best sights this park has to offer. Each day will offer both morning and afternoon activities, hiking around 3-4 hours (on average) with a maximum elevation gain of 700m – though every hike is flexible. You’ll walk around Azul Lagoon and hike toward the French Valley, choose to kayak Lake Grey, and climb up to some of the best viewpoints to take in the Torres del Paine mountain range. This option really does give you a chance to see and experience it all!

Kau Rio Serrano is located in the small town of Serrano on the banks of the river of the same name, surrounded by the beautiful nature that characterises Patagonia and with an impressive view of the Paine mountain range. The lodge is equipped with excellent facilities and comfortable rooms with central heating. There will be Double/Twin rooms as well as Quad-share bunk rooms available, both with ensuites. Meals are served in the restaurant where there’s a bar that accepts pesos, dollars, euros and credit cards if you fancy a drink.

What about the Optional activity on the W-Trek Comfort Hiking Experience option?

You’ll have the option to head out on Lake Grey for a paddle on Day 5 (extra fee applies). We’ll meet our specialist kayak guides at the inlet of Serrano River, and they’ll match you with a kayak and provide all the necessary equipment for a unique way to explore Lake Grey. No prior experience is required, everything you need is supplied, as long as you can paddle!
