Africa Safari Adventure Tours

Explore Africa, the continent of discoveries, on a safari & hiking adventure

When you think about Africa, you probably think of the Sahara, an array of safaris and endless stretches of unspoiled bush inhabited by elephants and lions. You're right, but it's also much more than that: vibrant cities by the coast, impressive mountain ranges, lush rainforests, thundering waterfalls... And that's not all, there's the cultural scene, amazing cuisine, and eventful history - every aspect as special as the last.

"An African safari has been on the top of my bucket list ever since high school. This year, I finally checked that box and the trip could not have been more amazing! In addition to seeing the Big 5 and other amazing animals up close and personal in their natural environment, we also explored Cape Town and Table Mountain and wine country! Our guide, Jamie, was extremely knowledgeable about every topic and I came away having learned and experienced so much more than I ever imagined. I highly recommend this trip!

"1 Flights to SA were not that sorted out. We had to arrive a day ahead, and had to miss the last day shuttle due to our earlier flight. Those disconnects were disappointing.
2 The lodges were wonderful. Probably due to the COVID disruption, walking tours became driven tours. We did see a lot, but I was so looking forward to the walking game drives.
3 I understand the schedule pressures that made the city walking tour in the AM and the climb to Table Mountain in the afternoon. But, that's after another scheduled great (big) meal that most of us decided to miss due to the impending climb.
4 Wine tours were great, but the dining schedules were so compacted that we ate too much in too short a time: Breakfast in Franshoek at 0800, with the wine/foodie tour starting at 1000 in Stellenboesh that lasted to 1300. Lunch followed right after and we didn't finish until 1500. Then dinner at 1800?! All the food were tasty, but it was too much in a very short time. It became an Active Eating Adventure tour.

5 Perhaps because of the 1-3 activity rating that the activities were very light but the eating was heavy? We were used to the 3-4 ratings of the previous trips where the food was hearty but appropriate to the level of activities.
6 Love the tour guide: knowledgeable and full of stories and background of the country. We found out that this was his first tour for Active. He's a keeper. read less

We did not go to Kruger National Park on this trip. Kruger was never listed as part of the safari trip.

"This was absolutely a lifetime highlight ... from the fabulous guides - to the extremely hardworking and helpful support staff (thank you, Mathew!) - to the delicious food - to the hike itself - and to my fellow hikers, I truly feel this was the best trip of my life. And a very cool accomplishment to reach one of the world's seven summits. I'm not sure what else I can do to top this.

"Active Adventures never cease to amaze - the destinations they choose, the companies they engage, the guides they hire, the overall preparedness for a trip such as this. Their knowledge and expertise, their dedication to safety, their attention to detail, their flexibility in decision making, their open and honest communication, their awareness and understanding of their participants - all requirements and all surpassed! Eight days trekking through gorgeous scenery, African rainforest, and dry savanna, to the final arctic peak - Uhuru. We are experienced hikers and we went prepared but we were seriously challenged beyond all our expectations! The ratio of hikers to guides and porters, their dedication and care, and their enthusiasm and encouragement of us every day gave us a huge boost and ultimately our success. We are in our seventies, we made that trek to 19,341 feet, we experienced the beauty of nature in a truly unique way, we found strength we didn't know we had, and we saw the world from a far different perspective. Thank you Ola & Kim; Aroon, Matthew, & Steven; Ephata; Jackson & all thirty-eight porters who supported and worked so hard for us and whose names we wish we knew, our…

"Kilimanjaro was the goal, but even if the top was unattainable, meeting and getting to know the Tanzanian guides, chefs, porters and crew was the best part of the trip by far. Their work ethic, kindness, and genuine smiles made the trip spectacular. When you are serenaded acapela in Swahili towards the summit by the teams on the mountain under a full moon, you can do anything. Thank you to Bonaventure for your guidance and choosing the right camps and to Dan for his easy and always accessible manner for any concerns. You do not want to miss a chance to do this trip and go to Tanzania, whether you do a safari and feel the top of Kilimanjaro is for you. Just go...

"It was a special opportunity to visit three private game reserves bordering the Kruger. We stayed at two amazing camps and had a bit of a wilderness experience at a third camp where we saw no other people or jeeps for three days. The latter may have run a bit long, but it was interesting to get to know the park in more detail. The game drives at Notten's and Camp George produced outstanding viewing opportunities of a wide range of animals that were the highlight of this trip. The Cape Town leg at the end could benefit from some tweaking, but we loved our trip up Table Mountain and the Franschhoek area was beautiful. Overall an unforgettable trip that we feel privileged to have been able to join.

Africa Travel FAQs

Do you recommend buying travel insurance?

It’s essential you take out travel insurance to cover the likes of personal injury, medical expenses, trip cancellation for your travel with us. Please head to our Travel Insurance page for more in-depth information and insurance provider options. It’s also important to check your insurance covers all the activities you’ll be partaking in, in case you’re travelling to altitude or looking at extreme sports.

Can you help me find international flights to Africa?

Our preferred Travel Partner Fuzion Travel can assist with you with flights and other travel arrangements. Let them know your preferred travel plans, including any stopovers or extra nights’ accommodation, and they’ll put everything in place for you. They offer a total travel solution and five star service that you’ll want to tell your friends about!

Do you charge a forced single supplement if I'm a solo traveler?

We welcome many solo travelers on our trips – in fact, we get so many solo travelers and they always say it’s a great way to travel alone, but not actually by themselves. You’ll have an incredible adventure sharing your experiences with other like-minded travelers, and the best part is we don't charge extra for solo travelers, providing you don’t mind sharing a room. However, for bookings within 90 days of your chosen departure, a forced single supplement will apply if there is no other guest of the same gender already booked to share with.

If you prefer not to share a room at all, you can upgrade to a single room, if one is available, though our rooming is limited in Africa so best to get in fast!

How many people are there on each of your Africa trips?

We generally take up to 14 people per trip, although this can vary, and all our trips have at least two of our guides to look after you (apart from the occasions we have a small group). We have found that our trips tend to attract a particular kind of person and many people have commented that the social scene was one of the highlights of their trip!

Do I need to speak the local language?

A little would be helpful, especially on arrival and for ordering food in restaurants, but it's certainly not required. English is spoken in most hotels, airports and tourist areas though not everywhere. Our local guides are all fluent native speakers so if you don't have time to learn a little before arrival you don't have to worry... they will take care of everything.

How safe is it to go on a safari?

From a wildlife persepctive, it’s important to follow the below guidelines as you’re likely to encounter animals on foot or in water:

  • On all game activities (game drives, mokoro, boating and on foot) follow the instructions of the guides at all times.
  • Being quiet is not only important from a safety point ofview, but also to have the best possible experience for all guests.
  • The camps are unfenced meaning that animals might walk through at any time (especially at night) so guests to be aware and take caution.
  • In the camps the guides will always accompany guests to their tents/rooms after dark.
  • Never approach any animal and should you encounter one, stand your ground and never run
