"The trip to the Okavango and the active adventures group was absolutely awesome!! All of the guides were outstanding. I have absolutely no complaint on anything there. We had expected to see wildlife, but the amount of wildlife we saw and how up close we were able to view them was overwhelming! The first camp we stayed at with Benson and other guides were outstanding accommodations! A very upscale experience and appealed to a type of safari that royalty might experience! They were very patient and were very informative on our continuous barrage of curiosities! They worked very hard to find the wildlife and get us a great viewing opportunity! The lodges we stayed at were very nice and comfortable. The Kayak part of the journey was in my opinion, a much more rugged experience with John as our guide. I really liked that! To me it was almost like a throwback to a bygone era when a safari was a primitive experience with the cooking over the fire and camp style meal! I actually slept best at this camp! The kayaking was a wonderful experience, that made me feel close to the nature but yet at its mercy! I found John most interesting and regretted not having more time to get to know him better. The river boat sunset ride adventure was most enjoyable and I found it very interesting and once again felt like a throwback to a bygone era of safari style adventure! The walking safari on the island with the Mokoro and with Big IzzI was very informative and a change of pace for the adventure! I was overly impressed with the efforts put into a celebration of my wife’s birthday at this camp. The locals were so friendly and a big shout out to dipsy for his generosity in allowing us to see his home! The Victoria falls Ilala lodge was just fantastic and that part of the trip was a great ending that made us feel like some kind of royalty!! The staff at all of the lodges were very friendly and helpful! The various bush flights and boat rides to different locations added even more to the experience, with a fresh new adventure around every corner! The only negative experience I could mention was one that was beyond Active adventures or any of the guides control! We unfortunately had one guest in the party who in my opinion had no business being on a safari and through their incessant complaining, continuous rudeness, disrespect and mean spirit towards the other guest I felt threatened the success and safety of the trip! Once again Active adventures was first rate and promptly took care of the situation by having the offensive guest removed and sent home! That very much impressed me! Last but not least IzzI was great to be around and experience Africa with! He had a tough job and handled everything with professionalism! His knowledge of the wildlife was quite impressive! I am sure there are people and events not mentioned here, but there was so much to the trip that was awesome it is tough to encompass all! read less

"Kilimanjaro was the goal, but even if the top was unattainable, meeting and getting to know the Tanzanian guides, chefs, porters and crew was the best part of the trip by far. Their work ethic, kindness, and genuine smiles made the trip spectacular. When you are serenaded acapela in Swahili towards the summit by the teams on the mountain under a full moon, you can do anything. Thank you to Bonaventure for your guidance and choosing the right camps and to Dan for his easy and always accessible manner for any concerns. You do not want to miss a chance to do this trip and go to Tanzania, whether you do a safari and feel the top of Kilimanjaro is for you. Just go... read less

"Where to start with a review of an amazing adventure? We arrived and made our way to the start accommodations, The Ngare Sero Mountain lodge. Active Adventures picked a great lodge to start this trip at. Set in a small reserve with a small lake and surrounded by jungle. Lots of birds and monkeys to observe while walking around the many walking trails on the reserve. The rooms and food were excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Perfect place to prepare yourself for the next phase of this adventure, hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro. We met with Mel, our Active Adventures guide, and Olariv, our mountain guide, the day before heading to the mountain and received a very informative briefing about what was to come. On to the Mountain! The team, lead by Olariv, that Active Adventures paired with were amazing. Point to a plant, see a bird, hear a sound echoing through the trees, they could tell you about it. The camps they set up and the equipment they provided (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) were top notch. Even at the highest altitudes we slept warm and comfortable. And the food that their chef, Joseph, prepared was delicious. Throughout it all, Mel, made sure everything ran smoothly. All of this made the hike up the mountain a very great experience. It was great to have because the hike itself was tough. Not impossible tough but no stroll through the park either. Olariv and his team took great care to pay attention to everyone on our trip, closely watching health indicators and carefully setting the pace to ensure we all were successful. Standing on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro made every step worth it! Thank you, Active Adventures, for putting together an amazing trip and excellent team to take us to the top of Africa. read less

"We joined the Serengeti Safari after completing the Mount Kilimanjaro trek (If you’re thinking of doing both, I highly recommend doing the Kilimanjaro trek first, the Safari makes a nice relaxing victory lap!) and Active Adventures made the connection between the trips flawless. We met up with our guides, Simon and Douglas and headed out to visit a Maasai homestead. The cultural exchange was a very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The next day it was off to the Ngorongoro crater and it was something else! Animals as far as the eye could see in every direction. Everything you could want to see and more. Then it was off to the Serengeti. While there was a lot of driving involved, the vehicles we traveled in were comfortable and great for viewing the animals and surrounding landscape. Douglas and Simon were amazing spotters and full of knowledge of the wildlife that surrounded us (Douglas was especially good at identifying birds!!). The campsites we used throughout were excellent. Delicious food and wonderful vistas at each one. All had spacious tents with attached bathrooms and comfortable beds. Falling to sleep to the sounds of lions and hippos grunting in the distance is a surreal experience. Douglas and Simon worked tirelessly to find the animals everyone wants to see and using their knowledge and clues from other guides we ended our safari sighting the last of the Big 5 on our checklist, a leopard hiding in the tall grass of the Serengeti. What a sight to end the adventure on! This was a great adventure, and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to see the wildlife of Africa. read less

Africa Travel FAQs

Do you recommend buying travel insurance?

It’s essential you take out travel insurance to cover the likes of personal injury, medical expenses, trip cancellation for your travel with us. Please head to our Travel Insurance page for more in-depth information and insurance provider options. It’s also important to check your insurance covers all the activities you’ll be partaking in, in case you’re travelling to altitude or looking at extreme sports.

Can you help me find flights to Africa?

We recommend booking your flights through our preferred travel partner – Fuzion Travel. They’re our experienced hand-picked experts in travel, passionate about what they do, and will tailor-make your flight itinerary to match your Active Adventures tour. Get in touch with them directly by email – [email protected] fuziontravel.co.nz or on +1-833-244-5886. Let them know your preferred travel plans, including any stopovers or extra nights’ accommodation, and they’ll put everything in place for you. They offer a total travel solution and five star service that you’ll want to tell your friends about!

Do you charge a forced single supplement if I'm a solo traveller?

We don’t believe in charging you extra for travelling alone and we have lots of single travellers on our trips. There’s no forced single supplement if you don’t mind sharing a room (you might even get a room to yourself sometimes). If you prefer not to share a room at all, you can upgrade to a single room, if one is available, though our rooming is limited in Africa so best to get in fast!

How many people are there on each of your Africa trips?

We generally take up to 14 people per trip, although this can vary, and all our trips have at least two of our guides to look after you (apart from the occasions we have a small group). We have found that our trips tend to attract a particular kind of person and many people have commented that the social scene was one of the highlights of their trip!

Do I need to speak the local language?

A little would be helpful, especially on arrival and for ordering food in restaurants, but it's certainly not required. English is spoken in most hotels, airports and tourist areas though not everywhere. Our local guides are all fluent native speakers so if you don't have time to learn a little before arrival you don't have to worry... they will take care of everything.

How safe is it to go on a Safari?

From a wildlife persepctive, it’s important to follow the below guidelines as you’re likely to encounter animals on foot or in water:

  • On all game activities (game drives, mokoro, boating and on foot) follow the instructions of the guides at all times.
  • Being quiet is not only important from a safety point ofview, but also to have the best possible experience for all guests.
  • The camps are unfenced meaning that animals might walk through at any time (especially at night) so guests to be aware and take caution.
  • In the camps the guides will always accompany guests to their tents/rooms after dark.
  • Never approach any animal and should you encounter one, stand your ground and never run
