Arrive in Geneva, head to Chamonix

    #559

You’ll be picked up in Geneva and head through the French Alps to Chamonix – one of the most iconic mountain towns in the world. Nestled in the heart of a dramatic U-shaped valley, the views of the northern side of Mont Blanc are dramatic from anywhere in town, especially from our accommodation in the heart of Chamonix. You’ll have time to rest up and explore the town this afternoon, before meeting later for a welcome dinner.

    Hotel Pointe Isabelle, Chamonix (Dinner)

  • Day 2

Hike Mer de Glace, Grotto de Glace experience

    #560

Today you’ll hike just above Chamonix to the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice). As a warm-up for our hike in the coming days, we’ll take a train up through the fir trees that flank the north side of the Mont Blanc massif, to Montenvers, overlooking this incredible glacier. From Montenvers we’ll hike further up through trees and boulder fields to Le Signal Forbes – a lookout point affording unsurpassed views of the Mer de Glace Glacier and huge granite spires that rise sharply from the moraine walls. On our descent, we’ll have incredible views of the upper Chamonix Valley and the Aiguilles Rouges Mountains. Before boarding the train back down to Chamonix, we’ll take a gondola down to Mer de Glace’s Grotto de Glace (Ice Cave). Every year, a new ice cave is dug into the bowels of the Glacier, enabling us to walk inside the incredible sea of ice! After making our way back down to Chamonix, you’ll have this afternoon to relax in town, take in the views and dining highlights, or pick up any last-minute items you might need for our hike.

Hotel Pointe Isabelle, Chamonix (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 5.4 kilometers (3.19 miles), 2 hours, elevation +/- 436 meters (1430 feet)

  • Day 3

Begin Mont Blanc Circuit hike – hike to Les Houches

    #561

This morning we’ll leave Chamonix by Gondola up to Brevent (8410 feet), one of the highest peaks in the crystalline Aiguilles Rouges range, which stands opposite the Mont Blanc massif. From here we’ll hike across the Carlaveyron Plateau, the views of the north face of Mont Blanc, the Fiz range and the Chamonix valley are second to none! We’ll drop down to the village of Les Houches, our home for the evening, before meeting our local hosts and settle in for a hearty French mountain meal.

Hotel Les Campanules, Les Houches (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 14.4 kilometers (9 miles), 5-6 hours, elevation -1500 meters (5000 feet)

  • Day 4

Sea kayak Lake Annecy, visit old town Annecy

    #562

This morning we’ll drive a short distance to Annecy, the capital of the Haute Savoie region and one of the most beautiful towns in Europe. To kick off our day we’ll take to sea kayaks and circle part of this stunning crystal clear lake, exploring its numerous coves and beaches along the way. Later we’ll head back to Annecy town where you’ll have the chance to explore its narrow cobbled streets and 16th-century gothic architecture. With an outlook of the French Alps and an unmatched elegance, Annecy is the perfect place to lose yourself or simply sit on the sidewalk and watch the world go by!

Lodgings, Les Contamines (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Kayaking: 2-4 hours

  • Day 5

Hike the Roman Road to Savoie and Beaufortain

    #563

We’ll return to the Mont Blanc Circuit this morning after a short drive to Val Montjoie where we’ll begin our hike on an old Roman road to Plan des Dames. After a short break, we begin a gradual ascent of the Col du Bonhomme – an iconic mountain pass and the gateway to the Beaufortain region, famous for its unique cheeses. After breaking for lunch here, we’ll drop down into the sweeping wildflower meadows in the valley below to Les Chapieux where we’ll jump in our vehicle and drive a short distance to our accommodation for the evening, in the hamlet of Bourg St Maurice.

Hotel Autantic, Bourg St Maurice (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 15.9 kilometers (10 miles), 5-7 hours, elevation +1233 meters (4050 feet) / -678 meters (2220 feet)

  • Day 6

Hike “Vallee des Glaciers” into Italy

    #564

After breakfast we’ll head back to Les Chapieux where we’ll visit a local family-run Beaufort cheese factory that has been making cheese for hundreds of years, having passed down their traditional methods of production generation after generation. After our visit, we’ll begin our ascent of the “Vallee des Glaciers” (Valley of the Glaciers). Our first destination is the Col de la Seigne – the pass that straddles the border between France and Italy and is an amazing place to view the southern side of the Mont Blanc range. As you stand with one foot in France and the other in Italy, you’ll be confronted with astounding views of huge glaciers, massive rock spires and the broad ‘U’ shaped valley down into the Italian countryside. We’ll make our way down the valley, passing through green pastures and alpine streams. Our home for this evening is the village of Courmayeur, a picture-perfect Italian village at the head of the Aosta valley. Welcome to Italy!

    #565

Roman monuments, medieval castles, vineyards, and quaint villages define the Aosta Valley as one of Europe’s quintessential mountain regions, all against an incredible backdrop of steep snow-capped peaks. Today you’re free to explore Courmayeur and the surrounding area. Over hundreds of years, the local people here have perfected the “l’art de vivre” (the art of living), through exquisite mountain cuisine, beautiful architecture, and fine wine. A day exploring the eateries, art galleries, and vineyards of Courmayeur will recharge your culture batteries well and truly! If you’re keen to stay active today, there are plenty of adventurous options available, including hiking, cycling and golf to name just a few. Enjoy!

    Hotel Croux, Courmayeur (Breakfast)

  • Day 8

    Hike Mont de la Saxe

    #566

We’ll leave Courmayeur this morning and hike up through dense larch forest and onto alpine meadows leading up to Rifugio Bertone, where we’ll make a brief stop for an espresso and soak in the jaw-dropping views of Mont Blanc. From here we’ll continue on to the Mont de la Saxe balcony trail overlooking the Italian Val Ferret, looking straight across to some of the highest peaks of the Mont Blanc massif and the tumbling glaciers that descend the southern side of the range into the valley below. They look so close, you’ll feel like you can throw a stone and hit the highest peaks – it’s a sight you have to see to believe. After lunch, we’ll drop down into the Val Ferret and green pastures of the Lavachey where we’ll enjoy a classic home-cooked Italian/French meal prepared by our local hosts.

Hotel Lavachey, Lavachey (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 15.2 kilometers (9.4 miles), 5-8 hours, elevation +814 meters (2670 feet) / -387 meters (1270 feet)

    Hike into Switzerland

    #567

Close to our accommodation, the trail to Switzerland begins, over one of the Mont Blanc regions’ most renowned passes – the Grand Col Ferret. The massive granite spires of the south side of the Mont Blanc range are our backdrop on the ascent to the Col Ferret, followed by the astoundingly beautiful views of the Swiss Val Ferret, the Glacier de l’A Neuve and the village of La Fouly that lies beneath it. We’ll hike down to La Fouly through classic Swiss pastures, before a short drive to Champex Lac, a picture-perfect lakeside village and our home for the evening.

Hotel Sporting, Champex Lac (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 14.6 kilometers (9 miles), 4-6 hours, elevation +748 meters (2450 feet)/ -815 meters (2673 feet)

  • Day 10

    Hike Upper Rhone valley, Switzerland

    #568

Today is a proper “Swiss cow day” as we hike through some of the greenest and most picturesque valleys on the planet, all accompanied by the soundtrack of cow bells ringing out across the meadows. As we hike to Bovine peak, we’ll have great views of Wildstrubel, the hulking glaciated 9-mile wide peak that divides the Valais and Bern regions of Switzerland, and out to the northwestern mountain passes of the Oberland area. After our hike, we’ll head down into the town of Argentiere, nestled in a stunning mountain valley just across the French border.

Hotel Dahu, Argentiere (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 14.7 kilometers (9.1 miles), 4-7 hours, elevation +/- 770 meters (2530 feet)

  • Day 11

Bike L’Arve River Trail, Aiguille du Midi experience

    #569

This morning you’ll be fitted with a high-quality front suspension mountain bike and we’ll ride all the way back down to Chamonix. The ride is spectacular as we bike through the small villages of the upper Chamonix Valley and the larch fir trees that flank the glacier-fed L’Arve River. We’ll finish our ride back to Chamonix for a picnic lunch before making our way to the Hotel, only a short walk away! After lunch, we’ll take ourselves high above the valley to experience Aiguille du Midi – a cable car that leaves from downtown Chamonix and ends at a granite needle peak building at 3841 meters (12,604 feet). Aside from marveling at this incredible feat of engineering, you’ll be blown away when you find yourself so close to the summit of Europe’s highest peak, taking in once-in-a-lifetime views of the Alps from a high-altitude perspective. Later, we’ll head back to Chamonix to spend the final evening of our trip together.

Hotel Pointe Isabelle, Chamonix (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Biking: 16.3 kilometers (10 miles), 3-4 hours, elevation - 423 meters (1390 feet)

  • Day 12

    Head to Geneva, depart

Today is the last day of your trip around Mont Blanc. We’ll drive back to Geneva this morning in time for afternoon flights. If you’re staying in Chamonix or Geneva, we’re happy to book extra accommodation for you and help out with suggestions on other things you can do in the area. Either way, you’ll go home relaxed and refreshed after your active journey around one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, and enjoy a quintessential European Alps experience in true Active style.

"The tour was challenging but very achievable if you followed the fitness guidelines provided by Active. Our two guides...Claire and Celine were absolutely exceptional! They were experienced wilderness guides--capable, knowledgeable and passionate about the mountainous region we were exploring and in our fulfillment of all aspects of the trip. They did not disappoint! When the weather was less than favorable, their support and encouragement was genuine-they truly cared about us! And the scenery was impressive as any iconic mountain range can be! Having done New Zealand and Patagonia, this tour rates in that classification-not to be missed! read less

The food was very good at the hotels and local restaurants. My only suggestion would be prepared lunches as opposed to picnic style. "The tour of Mt. Blanc was truly spectacular! The tour consists of a great mix of hiking trails on some of the most challenging terrain in the Alps with stunning views of Mt. Blanc, combined with kayaking and mountain biking. Active Adventures did a stellar job organizing the trip and ensuring it was an experience of a lifetime. The trip gets a high rating on every score—challenging and exciting daily hikes with awesome views, mixed with culinary delights, and cultural tidbits. The accommodation was quaint, the restaurants were carefully selected to provide a unique blend of local cuisine and Michelin quality meals. The collaboration between Active Adventures and Chamonix Guides worked seamlessly. Every detail of the tour was thoughtfully planned while allowing some flexibility to changing weather and client preferences. We were fortunate to have an amazing local guide and a terrific assistant who made the tour highly enjoyable. The tour met and exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great adventure! read less

"Active Adventures provided a wonderful blend of culture, hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking along with incredible scenery. Our blend of guides which included Holly, our Kiwi connection, Jean Marc, our French guide, and Boi, our Catalonian driver and food gatherer extraordinaire were fun, extremely knowledgeable, and very committed to the enjoyment of our trip. Taking a day to kayak in the middle of the trip and then a day for light mountain biking at the conclusion gave different perspectives of the area and a much needed rest to tired muscles. Jean Marc had a wealth of stories and details about the region and cultures that added depth to the beauty of each hike. He quite frequently took the 'road less traveled' to ensure that we were as alone on the trail as we could be. Our food in each location was of each region and excellent. One of my absolute favorite aspects of the trip was our daily lunches. Boi would procur items from each area; breads, cheeses, meats, spreads, etc and we would each take an item in our own pack. Holly and Jean Marc would then take other items like homemade salads, special condiments, or spreads. We'd hike to a spot and eat a wonderful picnic of essentially tapas at a Refugio or on a mountainside. My biggest regret is that they didn't keep a list of the things we ate so I could possibly find them at home. It was delicious and beautiful dining with glorious views of the mountains. Holly was certainly our caretaker. You'd never know it as she was delightful, fun, knowledgeable, and never seemed to tire. She packs a good snowball too. With all of that, she took good care of making things work, of being sure the guests were comfortable, and that life went smoothly. I'd travel with her anytime. One last thing, I like the guest limit that we had. There were eight of us and it was a good sized group. It was fun to meet new people but it wasn't so large that you either felt like a herd on the trail or that being at the front of the pack was imperative. Well done! read less

"We met our guides at the hotel in Geneva, and the jokes and laughter started from there. First night was Chamonix at the charming Hotel Isabella. Each day brought magnificent alpine hiking and scenery, and we even watched the start of a heart stopping ultra marathon race in Courmayeur, whose runners passed us by all the following day. We hiked up and down steep mountain trails, passed waterfalls, mountain cows with their leather collars and bells and ate the most wonderful local cheeses, ham, bread and chocolates ...all guilt free. Each evening brought another delectable feast in another adorable chalet. Our guides were great, and gave us a lot of information about the local terrain and towns, history, geography and folklore. we were ensconced in the mountain world for the most memorable twelve days. "My wife and I recently completed this trip. The scenery was truly amazing. We have hiked previously with AA in New Zealand on the Rimu trip which was likewise wonderful, but I found this to be an even better experience. Our guides Bernadette from France and Jo from Wales/New Zealand were unfailingly cheerful and fun to be around.Clem our driver and lunch preparer was very sweet and quite the driver on some very narrow winding roads. The food was very good and the hotels were very clean and comfortable while all being different in their own way. The hiking days were long but the pace was very comfortable. I've hiked all over the US including multiple trips to Alaska and Hawaii,Canada, Patagonia,Mexico, and much of Central and South America. Tour du Mont Blanc to me is at or close to the top in scenery perhaps with the exception of Wrangell St Elias National Park in Alaska. However, there are no amenities to be had there which made this trip so enjoyable. Our group was likewise a really nice and interesting group. There were a lot of interesting conversations. I recommend this trip and in particular Bernadette,Jo,and Clem.

"My wife and I had a marvelous time on our hiking circuit around Mont Blanc with Active Adventures. As a fairly but not overly fit couple in our 60s, our first worry was that we'd be overwhelmed by the physical challenges of hiking 8 miles or so on an almost daily basis. Let us not sugarcoat this: the hikes WERE a challenge. But the great pleasure and satisfaction of this trip was that we could and did meet those challenges. The other members of our seven-member group were on exactly the same level of fitness that we were, and our two guides, Jo and Bernadette, were just terrific: fun, encouraging, and extremely knowledgeable about all the mountains we hiked up. At the end of each hike - 4 or so pm - we were exhausted but psyched for a hot shower and cold beer in our next country inn. And by the next morning we were ready take the mountains on again. An important point to add here is that our trip was well scheduled, with a few critical breaks. In surveying other travel groups that hike around Mont Blanc, we had noticed that some called for really rigorous hikes every day..for ten or twelve days. Frankly, that would have been too much for us - and more stressful than satisfying. On Active Adventures, we started with a half day hike, followed by a day of kayaking...By the third day we were ready for our first full-day hike, and the others that followed. After that we were ready for another interlude, of mountain biking. We don't want to send in this review without emphasizing how great our guides were. Jo and Bernadette did more than get us from one trail and country inn to the next. They really knitted us together as a team. They were the best! read less

Useful Info

Where does the trip start?

If you arrive on the first day of your trip, an Active Adventures Europe representative will meet you at the Geneva airport (GVA) at 2pm and take you through to your accommodation in Chamonix, France. If you’re already in Chamonix, you’ll meet your trip leader and the rest of your group in the lobby of Hotel Pointe Isabelle at 6pm.

Where does the trip end?

Your trip ends with a drop-off at the Geneva Airport (GVA) in time for flights below. If you’re staying on in Geneva you can take a transfer from Geneva Airport to Central Geneva via regular train services.

What flights would you recommend?

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Geneva by 12pm. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the city prior to your trip start.

Departure: Flying out on the last day of the trip, we recommend departing from Geneva after 12pm for both domestic and international. Earlier flight times will require a separate transfer booked at your own expense.

How fit do I need to be?

As an Activity Level 4 trip, you’ll need a solid level of fitness for this trip. This is one of our more adventurous trips and if you’re used to pushing yourself, we’ll keep you challenged as well. Hikes on this trip range between three and eight hours to complete, with a few shorter options available some days. You should be in the habit of doing regular aerobic exercise, ideally involving some up hills and down hills and perhaps even carrying a daypack! Some of our days have long uphill and downhill sections so with some preparation before your trip begins, you’ll enjoy the active and outdoor nature of your trip all the more.

Please head to our Fitness Guide for great tips on how to prepare along with a workout plan!

What accommodations do we stay at on the Tour du Mont Blanc trip?

The Tour du Mont Blanc is an active adventure trip around the Mont Blanc region of the European Alps. We stay in clean and comfortable accommodation with ensuite bathrooms (with the exception of one night with shared bathrooms) and amazing views.

While there maybe opportunities to do laundry during the trip, if need be, they won’t be as convenient. Self-service laundries are
rare, so you’ll probably need to use on-site hotel laundry services (arrange this through your hotel reception, usually for ~7€/load), and we recommend hand-washing technical fabrics yourself.

How much luggage can I bring on this trip?

You'll need one piece of luggage plus a daypack. Your main piece of luggage can be anything from a backpack, to a sports bag with wheels or a suitcase and a good quality trekking daypack 25-30 litres (2000 cubic inches) is required for the days on the trail.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travellers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travellers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travellers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.

Is tipping expected in Europe?

Tipping is not expected in Europe however you might want to tip a little extra if you feel someone gave really fantastic service, but it's not really necessary. Many of our people also choose to tip their Active Adventures Europe trip leaders and local guides and we recommend USD$20 per day, per guest, per Trip Leader/guide.
