Patagonia Hiking Adventure - November 2023

"What a great adventure in Patagonia! Me and my 2 adult children spent 14 days in Patagonia with wonderful guides! Jessica was absolutely amazing! She took care of every detail, truly cared about us and the region, was fun, knowledgeable!! She made the trip very special for us. Active Adventures you have a gem in Jess! The local guides were great too -- Andrea was a blast and knew all the great places to take us. Her love of the region was evident in her knowledge and enthusiasm. My daughter did the W trek and Chris and Jess took great care of her. It was an experience of a lifetime for her. Loved the small group -- only 5 of us! Loved the attention to detail, the food, the drivers, the accommodations! The shear beauty of the place would have been enough but all the other details took it over the top!!

"It was an amazing experience. From the organization of the trip leader guide to the experience of walking the Inca Trail and ending up with a majestic view of Machu Picchu at the end of the 4 day trek, the entire trip surpassed my expectations. The Amazon portion of the trip although extremely hot and humid was exciting. From the sunrises to the sunsets, with the wildlife and flora and fauna.. simply amazing. The restaurants chosen by our trip leader showcased the gastronomic excellence of Peru. Simply amazing

Outstanding vacation!

"For those who enjoy hiking and adventure it's a fantastic way to see Peru and Ecuador. The guides were truly outstanding, and the hotel accommodations were fantastic. We moved around a lot, and almost every hotel room had a fantastic view. We learned a lot about the history and culture, while also taking in beautiful sites and views. And learned so much about what makes The Galapagos Islands so unique and amazing. And about all the wildlife that inhabits these regions.

Lifetime Memories

"Our Mother/daughter trip was perfect for us! We both love the outdoors and physical challenges so Patagonia fit both criteria. Meeting new people and becoming fast friends with others who enjoy the same experience was another highlight. Our guides were all fantastic and kept a very positive spirit even when the weather would change our plans. We were only disappointed that it had to come to an end.

Hospitality that rivals the incredible scenery of the W-trek and Argentine Patagonia

"I went for the scenery, but it was our caring guides, the hospitality of everyone from drivers to innkeepers, and having all the details taken care of, that made this the trip of a lifetime.
All of our guides went above and beyond the rules of guiding (such as "a guide always goes last"), and what might get an extra tip. Just to single out one example from everyone: Cem Inal, our Tour Guide, always stayed well behind me on the W-trek, making sure I never felt pressured to hurry. Baru, our extra W-trek guide, decided to simply hold me down in one bad wind rather than make me leave the wonderful view--I'm still unsure if this was he thought I'd blow away or if I was going to do something stupid! Viktor, our "lead" W-trek guide, not only lightened my load, but came rushing out to greet me at the end of the days--especially I remember at Refugio Paine Grande. Cecilia and Paula, our local guides in Argentina, shared so much, not letting on that that we must have been the hundredth time each had given the same information or taken the same hike.…

The guides Camille and Simon who took us on the "add-on" glacier walk on Grey Glacier were similarly caring, careful, and welcoming.
Although I was assured by Tash (Active Adventures chat) that "The majority of our customers on any of our given trips are in their 60's - 70's," at 69 I was the oldest in my group, with 6 long-legged, very fit, and much younger trekkers (one age 29, four in their 50's, and one in mid/early 60's.) I am especially grateful to the W-trek guides Baru and Viktor, and Cem (truly a "gem") for making me feel welcomed, appreciated, and never, ever, as I trailed all the others, suggesting that I take fewer pictures, hurry the pace, or not stop to chat with other trekkers. read less

Incredible Opportunity to Experience the Variety of Peru

"This trip includes amazing variety as it ranges from the more city like atmosphere in Cuzco, to the peace and beauty of the Sacred Valley, the challenges of hiking and camping to get over the 15000 ft peak to get to Olletetambo, the awesome scenes and history of Machu Picchu, and the wonderful wildlife of the Amazon Basin. All along way we thoroughly enjoyed the all the people we met and getting to better understand the lives of the local Peruvian folk. Zack was the perfect tour leader - fun, knowledgeable, and always looking out for our varied interests and needs - and seems to know everyone and all the best places to eat and visit. The tour guides - both Salvi & Joel - were incredibly helpful and added to the fun. We felt that the selection of the Lares Trail was definitely the best choice for us as it lived up to all our hopes in terms of beauty and solitude and the Peruvian mountains are truly awesome (and the mules and llamas (and horse!) were a godsend as well as a fun addition to the crew). The meals and snacks were incredible all along the way -- the first lunch after the hike in the Sacred Valley was a truly surprising highlight of the entire trip and set the tone for great things to come. The cooking team adjusted incredibly well to my personal last minute need to have "soft foods only" after fracturing my jaw shortly before we started the trip.
We had been planning and hoping to take this trip for years and it lived up to and exceeded all of our hopes and expectations! read less

"Our trip was more than we imagined. The Inca Trail hike was extremely challenging, but our guide and porters encouraged us to keep going and the end result (Machu Picchu) was life changing!! The trip to the Amazon was extremely well planned and we were amazed not only by the wildlife, but of the knowledge that our guide was able to share with us. All of this would not have been possible without our Active Adventure guide....Salvador! We would love to travel with him again!! He was kind, patient, efficient, organized, and knowledgeable! We appreciate all of our drivers, hotel staffers, etc......but most of all....Salvador!!

Best Trip of their life - Fantastic time!

"Pepo was fantastic, Galakiwi was wonderful and knowledgeable, we enjoyed every activity and the food was fantastic. Loved the snorkeling every day! Even our 16-year-old had a great time and didn't want to leave as we had a great mix of ages on the trip. The beaches and accommodations were beautiful and loved getting to know the people along the way. The trip ran really smoothly and seamlessly, a definite trip of a lifetime!

An adventure of a lifetime

"Our family, my husband, my two college-age children and myself, will be talking about this trip for the rest of our lives. Everything was amazing! The accommodations and staff, the restaurants and food, the snorkeling and the equipment, the boat captains and first hands, the ANIMALS, the biking, the kayaking, and above everything else, our guide, Pepo, could not have been better. We learned so much about the geography, history, culture and wildlife. This trip was worth every penny. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I left a piece of my heart in the Galapagos Islands.

South America Travel FAQs

Do you recommend buying travel insurance?

As an Active Adventures traveller, It’s essential you take out travel insurance to cover the likes of personal injury, medical expenses, trip cancellation for your travel with us. Please head to our Travel Insurance page for more in-depth information and insurance provider options. It’s also important to check your insurance covers all the activities you’ll be partaking in, in case you’re travelling to altitude or looking at extreme sports.

What's included on your South America trips?

Accommodation

On your South America trip you'll stay in a variety of places depending on the destination and activities. In Peru you'll stay in nice hotels, tents while you're hiking (complete with porters to put them up for you, cook your meals and generally make sure it's the best camping experience ever!), jungle lodges and local homes on Amantani Island (a truly once in a lifetime experience). In Ecuador mainland you'll stay in hotels and jungle lodges, and on the Galapagos Islands you'll stay on dry land, meaning you're free to walk around each evening and get to know the residents of these famous isles. Down in Patagonia you'll lay your head each night in hotels, lodges and the famous 'refugios' in the National Parks. While these may sound basic they have incredible facilities (including electricity), the views are out of this world, they have restaurants and you'll meet an incredible array of people that have travelled from far and wide to visit the bottom of the world.

Transport

Your transport will be a mixture of bus, plane, boat, bike and your very own two feet on our trips in South America. You'll spend most time on a boat in the Galapagos Islands as you make your way from island to island during the day, and down in Peru you'll travel by boat in the Amazon to get to your lodge. We have domestic flights included in our Galapagos Islands and Peru trips to shorten our travel times and to ensure you have the best experience possible. All your transport is included from the start of your trip and we'll drop you at the airport at the end. The details are all listed in the trip specific itineraries.

Meals

All your meals are included as described in the itinerary except on your free days. We have found that people enjoy checking out what is on offer by themselves sometimes, so you can go and see what's out there! On every other day and especially after any long hikes, we've chosen places to eat that can cater for our hearty appetites, work well with our small groups (they know we are coming) and provide us with an authentic destination specific culinary experience. There are always options for you, so you can either be brave or choose something more familiar. On the hiking portion of our trips (such as on the Inca Trail) we work with an outstanding team of cooks who will amaze you with what they can produce on a campsite miles from the nearest town. You can be assured that on all our trips we will make sure you are very well fed.

Trip leaders

Our trips are all led by an experienced Trip Leader. Our Trip Leaders are very proud to work with Active Adventures and often lead our trips for many years, for which we are very lucky and very grateful as it means we're able to consistently offer a fantastic level of service. They work closely with our local specialist guides to provide you with a seamless, fun, exciting and memorable trip. They will happily share with you as much or as little as you want to know about the history, culture, social aspects and lifestyle of the country you are visiting. In the Galapagos Islands you will be accompanied by a specialist Nature Guide, qualified to provide you with plenty of information about the species that make their home on the islands.

How many people are there on each of your South America trips?

We get a real variety of people on our trips and they all seem to have one thing in common – a love of the outdoors! Our group sizes range from a minimum of four people to a maximum of fourteen people, generally with a mix of singles, couples and friends.

Do you charge a forced single supplement if I'm a solo traveller?

We welcome many solo travelers on our trips – in fact, we get so many solo travelers and they always say it’s a great way to travel alone, but not actually by themselves. You’ll have an incredible adventure sharing your experiences with other like-minded travelers, and the best part is we don't charge extra for solo travelers, providing you don’t mind sharing a room. However, for bookings within 90 days of your chosen departure, a forced single supplement will apply if there is no other guest of the same gender already booked to share with.

If you prefer not to share a room at all, you can upgrade to a single room, if one is available. If your trip uses refugios which can only accommodate guests on a multi-share basis, the upgrade cost will reflect this.
