Cynthia Valladares

Peru and Patagonia Trip Leader

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Lima and then I lived in the Amazon (Iquitos) when I was a little girl then back to Lima. When I was a teenager, we moved to the altiplano, Puno- Lake Titicaca. In fact, Puno is where I discovered my passion for the outdoors since it is a place that has easy access to lakes, mountains and rivers. It is very different from the coast and I fell in love with those areas right away and since the very first moment I got on a kayak and when I summited my first mountain, I knew I wanted or I needed to be out there. I haven’t stopped since then and it's probably been 16 years already.

What’s your favourite sport or activity?
I love being in the water, so kayaking is one of them, and I also like hiking quite a lot. When you hike to get somewhere, you get a totally different experience; the smell of the flowers, the heat of the sun, the wind or even the rain makes it more special, makes it real. I’m very excited about beginning to rock climb and I also started doing power & ashtanga yoga 4 years ago.

Your dream destination?
The bucket list is quite long now but I really want to go to India and spend at least a month there or more. It is a highly spiritual country; very rich in culture. I want to see, smell and touch the culture just like I do in my country.

Most delicious meal that you can cook?
I can cook the most amazing "lomo saltado" which is typically Peruvian with beef. I love pasta too, so seafood pasta is one of my favourites.

Favourite quote?
"Tourists don't know where they've been, travellers don't know where they're going." - Paul Theroux

One tip for our travellers?
I would tell everybody that there’s a whole new world out there that needs to be discovered so travel, learn, enjoy, experience, live and if u decide to go out there go without expectations and just enjoy every minute of it, be flexible 'cause it will never be the same as home and that makes it worthwhile seeing.

    Incredible experience

We had an amazing time in the Galapagos!
Everything was perfectly organized for us. All we had to do was show up - just as it said in the description of the tour.
Our tour guide Zambo would always tell us well in advance what we would be doing on the next day, what we had to bring, what we should wear.
The food was always organized for us; they would always ask us beforehand what we wanted to eat.
Everywhere we went they were expecting us and everything went smoothly.
Zambo was an amazing guide! He was extremely knowledgeable. He had an answer for everything and he was very patient with our kids. One could see that he enjoyed showing his home to us.
The encounters with the animals were truly amazing. We saw blue footed boobies, frigate birds, hammerhead sharks, eagle rays, sting rays, penguins, hundreds of sea lions, sea iguanas, etc.
The animals seemed at ease with the humans around them in some cases almost curious.

    Like an Inca in Peru

This trip was better than I could've ever expected. The Inca Trail was the most incredible hardest thing I've ever done both mentally and physically and I could not have done it without our guide Zac and my new found friend Cynthia. Machu Picchu was the perfect culmination to the pilgrimage. The rest of the trip and all of my other wonderful new friends including our guide Erick will never be forgotten. I will be talking about this trip for years to come and cannot wait to go on my next Active Adventure!

    Jaguar, November 2016

This trip truly was an 'active adventure', and exceeded my expectations in so many ways.
Peru is such a beautiful country, rich in history, and culture. All of our guides were superb, but Erick as our trip host absolutely made this trip worry free, a true learning experience, and SO much fun! If it's all in the details, Erick and Active covered them all and more!
I arrived as a solo traveler and left having made friends and memories that I will treasure always.
Thank you Active Adventures, until next time!

    Toughest hike yet but rewarding

The "W" was one of the toughest hikes we've undertaken because of straight line steep grades and rocky trails. But when we finished we felt like we had met the challenge and all our pre-trip workouts were worth it. Our guide, Cahit, was fantastic - knowledgeable, outgoing and optimistic. The adding of mountain biking and kayaking was a nice touch!
