Xanthe out on the trails in the South Island of New Zealand - guides for Active Adventures

Active Adventures Guide | New Zealand

Xanthe was born and bred in Nelson, a coastal town at the top of New Zealand's South Island. Growing up surrounded by national parks, she had no choice but to fall in love with the outdoors. Like most Kiwi kids, she spent her youth outside, building forts, climbing trees and coming home covered in mud. Her love for adventure flourished further in high school, where she learnt the skills to explore more remote and technical terrain by foot, bike, rope and kayak. Ever since, she has been putting these skills to the test across the South Island, soaking up everything her home has to offer.

Before becoming an Active Adventures Guide, Xanthe raced her mountain bike across the globe, representing New Zealand. She has experience not only competing, but also guiding, coaching, and mentoring in the mountain bike industry. She is passionate about inspiring others to get outside and excited to share her beautiful backyard with you!

What's your favorite travel destination?

Probably Italy! Although I love challenging adventures, I also don't mind gelato for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a swim and a sunbathe.

What's your favorite adventure activity?

Hiking is obviously a fav, but mountain biking is my first love! I learnt to ride before I could walk and the sport has taken me to some pretty cool places. I also love skiing and surfing, although I suggest you keep a wide berth if you see me doing either of those things. My skills are a work in progress.

What has been your most inspiring adventure experience?

Trekking through the Langtang Valley in Nepal. Hearing the stories and witnessing the lives of those in remote alpine villages was eye-opening and unforgettable.

When did you first get the travel bug?

I think I was born with it!

What is your favorite trip to lead?

The South Island Scenic Trails Bike Tour. As I said, bikes are my bread and butter, and this trip takes us through some of the South Island's most stunning landscapes.

What inspired you to become a trip leader?

I feel that life is too short for me to do anything but the most fun and invigorating jobs.

Why did you want to guide for Active Adventures?

No matter where I go, I always come back home and think 'nothing beats New Zealand'. Maybe I'm biased, but it truly is the best place ever, and being able to share it with others has always been my dream job!

What's a destination you'd like to travel to, that you haven't been to yet?

I have been dreaming for a while about South America - Maybe Chile?

Do you have any favorite hobbies or special talents?

When I can't get outside, I usually resort to knitting and crocheting clothes. If you would like a hand-knit beanie for your trip, you will have to reach out to me 100 rainy days in advance. It's a slow-moving production line.
