Active Adventures Guide | New Zealand
Ferni is from Wellington, which she believes is the best city in Aotearoa / New Zealand! Raised in a family of home-bodies, Ferni somehow found a love for the outdoors. Now that she’s grown, she loves dragging her siblings along on her outdoors adventures (much to their chagrin). She completed the Te Araroa Trail (which runs the length of New Zealand, that's about 1,900 miles!) last summer and did not want to stop walking, so now she has joined us!
What's your favorite travel destination?
I am a massive foodie and my father is from Malaysia so I would have to say Malaysia (or Singapore). In the off-season I am planning on eating my way through South East Asia.
What's your favorite adventure activity?
Thru-hiking! I absolutely love it.
What has been your most inspiring adventure experience?
I completed the Te Araroa Trail in the 25-26 season and absolutely fell in love. Just being able to take your time on an adventure is amazing.
When did you first get the travel bug?
I feel like I have always had an itch to travel, I just needed to start.
What is your favorite trip to lead?
The Ultimate South Island Adventure! So much of the country packed in to only 14 days.
Why did you want to guide for Active Adventures?
As my sister says, I am maximising my 20s! After completing the Te Araroa, I realised I did not want to stop hiking, so I figured out how to turn it into a career.
What's a destination you'd like to travel to, that you haven't been to yet?
Patagonia is calling my name! However, the current top of my list is the Pacific Crest Trail in the US or the Hexatrek in France.
Do you have any favorite hobbies or special talents?
I am big into the fibre arts, so you will most likely see me with a couple different knitting projects over the course of the trip. I am currently working on my first ever knitting pattern design, which is inspired by my favorite New Zealand birds.
