Day 1 — Arrive in Cuzco, hike Sacsayhuamán fortress

Our trip starts in Cuzco, the heart of the Inca empire. Your trip leader will greet you with a cup of hot coca tea – a local speciality. After lunch, we’ll set off for a walk around this amazing ancient city and up to Sacsayhuamán fortress overlooking the main Plaza and Cuzco Valley. The fortress, meaning ‘House of the Sun’, is a magnificent archaeological site representing a set of jaguar’s teeth with massive, perfectly fitted stones weighing up to 130 tonnes (143 tons) each and was the place where the Incas made their final stand against the Spanish conquistadores. No one really knows what the Incas used Sacsayhuamán for – some say it was a sanctuary and temple of the sun, others say it was a granary. No matter who is right, you’ll have a lot of fun hearing all the stories this amazing area inspires. Later, we’ll take a walk through the colourful Cuzco street markets. If you prefer, you can take some time to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Cuzco’s lively town square and meet up again later for an evening meal.

Day 2 — Cycle Sacred Valley, visit Pisac market, hike Pisac ruins

We’ll head into the fertile Sacred Valley of the Incas this morning, stopping just above Cuzco, where we’ll jump on our bikes and ride down through breath-taking scenery, dotted with local villages and surrounded by the massive green slopes of the Andes. We’ll finish our ride in the small town of Pisac, where we’ll have a chance to check out the colourful mercado artesanal. From here we’ll begin a spectacular hike up to the Pisac ruins. These Inca terraces rise 610 metres (2000 feet) up from the river below. It’s a heart-pumping walk up through ancient agricultural terraces – you’ll never forget the views of Pisac and the Urubamba Valley! After exploring the ancient complex, we’ll descend the original Inca stairways and head back down the valley to Cuzco. This is the largest existing fortress-city of the Incas, and it’s the perfect warm-up for your Inca Trail trek tomorrow!

Days 3, 4, 5 and 6 — Inca Trail options

It’s an early start this morning as we start our trek to Machu Picchu!

Option A, Lares Inca Trail

Day 3 (afternoon) - Hike Lares Inca Trail to Cuncani

From Cuzco, we’ll head in the direction of the Sacred Valley. The road leads to Lares and crosses the Amparaes Pass. This phenomenal drive winds through arid landscapes, crosses rivers and you’ll see some of the most stunning mountain vistas in Peru. Our final destination is the hot baths of Lares. Here, naturally occurring hot springs await us before we set out on our trek. From the thermal baths unfolds a small track used by local children and community members of Lares. We’ll pass through hand tilled fields and crops of quinoa and potato, amongst quaint stone houses. After a gradual climb of a few hours we’ll stop for a delicious lunch, before continuing on to the community of Cuncani, where we’ll set up camp for the evening.
Lares Inca Trail camp (All meals)

Day 4 - Hike Lares Inca Trail over Paso de Pumahuanca to Paccha

If we have clear skies at sunrise, we’ll wake to the imposing view of Colque Crus, a majestic mountain capped by a glacier, which provides water to the local community. We follow the path next to an icy stream that will take us towards the pass. The ascent is challenging. On reaching the summit a stunning view of the Pampas of Anta awaits us, followed by a descent that will be most welcome after the challenging climb. The descent is steep but beautiful, crossing a small forest of ‘Polylepis’, the endemic and endangered trees of the high Andes. Just after the forest and with an incredible view of the valley below we will stop for lunch. After which the drop continues until we reach our camp, a tranquil paradise surrounded by trees and crossed by a small river. Tonight, if we find some dead tinder, we’ll enjoy a cosy campfire.
Lares Inca Trail camp (All meals)

Day 5 - Hike Lares Inca Trail to Ollantaytambo

This morning will be our last on the trail. From camp the walk becomes easier down to the piscigranja (fish farm). As we descend we’ll feel the climate changing, becoming warmer and more alive, with more variety in vegetation, and we’ll be accompanied by hummingbirds along the way. After a few short hours we’ll meet our private transportation that will take us to Ollantaytambo Station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. As the train travels along, the valley turns into a canyon and the scenery alters, as the cloud forests begin to appear, on our approach to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. We will disembark the train at Aguas Calientes. After a well-deserved shower we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the best restaurants in town.
Local hotel, Aguas Calientes (All meals)

Day 6 (morning) - Visit Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast, we’ll head up to the ancient city of Machu Picchu, where we’ll join the rest of our group.

Option B, Classic Inca Trail

Day 3 (afternoon) - Hike through the sacred Valley of the Incas

We’ll leave Cuzco and make our way through the Sacred Valley of the Incas before starting our hike at Piscacucho, or Kilometre 82 as it is known by the locals. From here we’ll spend the day hiking alongside the Rio Cusichaca, surrounded by massive Andean peaks, Inca ruins and semi-arid forest. We’ll visit a couple of small villages along the way, then have lunch and rest a while on the way to our first camp, Pisonay. When you arrive at camp, you’ll find our porters have set up your tent so you can simply relax with a hot drink and get to know your fellow travellers. Tonight our cooks will prepare the first of many sumptuous hot meals for us to enjoy in our dining tent – you’ll be impressed how well we take care of you on the trail.

Classic Inca Trail camp (All meals)

Day 4 - Hike Inca Trail to Pacaymayo

Today is an unforgettable day. You’ll be woken with a cup of coca tea brought to your tent door. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin our hike on what will be our most challenging day. Today we climb 914 metres (3000 feet) up to Warmiwañusqa, or ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ altitude 4400 metres (14,435 feet). The trail winds its way up through a beautiful mountain pass with stunning panoramic views of the alpine wonderland. It’s a challenging hike to the pass, and the 360º views make every step worthwhile. After celebrating our ascent, we’ll walk down cobbled steps paved by the Incas over 500 years ago to Pacaymayo Valley, our camp for the evening. Again, we’ll already have tents set up so all you need to do is relax and enjoy the evening.

Classic Inca Trail camp (All meals)

Day 5 - Hike Inca Trail to Wiñay Wayna

The scenery gets even better today! We’ll explore several fascinating Inca fortresses as we descend, with the cloud forest becoming more and more lush as the air becomes warmer and denser. The ancient ruins and increasingly verdant surroundings lend an eerie mood to the day as we make our way down to our next camp, Wiñay Wayna. This is our final night on the trail, with breath-taking views and another hearty dinner!
Classic Inca Trail camp (All meals)

Day 6 (morning) - Hike to Machu Picchu

After a very early breakfast, we hike about an hour in the dawn light to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. We’ll wait here for the sun to rise and the morning fog to lift, giving us our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. It’s a moment to savour before we make our way down to explore this mysterious ancient city!

Day 6 (continued) — Explore Machu Picchu

We’ll meet our local guide who will show us around this fascinating ancient city. Afterwards, you’ll have all morning to explore the many passageways and stone structures of this mysterious place on your own. If you were on the Lares Trail, you’ll also have the chance to hike back to the Sun Gate for a unique perspective on these remote Inca ruins, set high on the top of a mountain surrounded by lush peaks. After plenty of time to explore Machu Picchu, we’ll take a scenic train ride back to Cuzco.
Hotel Royal Inca I or Hotel San Agustin, Cuzco (All meals)

Day 7 — Free day in Cuzco

Cuzco is the archaeological capital of the Americas and it’s a fabulous place to spend a day exploring – it’s no wonder it’s the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city! Walk along Cuzco’s central streets, lined with massive Inca-built stone walls that form the foundation of the city and blend into the colonial and modern architecture that has been added over the years. You can take the day to explore Cuzco’s most popular temples, museums, churches and fortresses. Alternatively, we’ll help you arrange one of the many optional guided activities available including mountain biking, hiking, or horseback riding. There’s also no shortage of great food and entertainment in Cuzco, with restaurants to suit any taste, cafés for coffee in the Plaza de Armas and great bars with local music.

Hotel Royal Inca I or Hotel San Agustin, Cuzco (Breakfast)

Day 8 — Journey to the Amazon, wildlife viewing in Tambopata Reserve

Today we’ll take a short flight from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado, a frontier town in the Amazon basin. We’ll take to motorised canoes and glide deep into the jungle down the Tambopata River, one of the headwaters of the Amazon. Listen for howler monkeys in the tropical forest canopy above and spot macaws perched high on the riverbanks. This area is teeming with wildlife and the boat trip to our jungle lodge is a great opportunity to look for giant otters, capuchin monkeys, caiman and an array of birds that can be found in this area. After lunch, we’ll experience the jungle with all of our senses by exploring on foot this time. Keep an eye out for the rainforest dwellers – including several species of monkeys – that come out in search of food in the late afternoon! After dark, you’ll have a chance to get back on board the canoes with a spotlight in search of the nocturnal caiman (South American crocodile) lurking in the river.
Amazon Lodgings, Amazon jungle (All meals)

Day 9 — Wildlife hike, virgin jungle exploration

This morning we’ll explore some of the many miles of jungle trails that criss-cross the dense rainforest. We’ll travel by motorised canoe and hike through virgin forest to experience the wealth of native flora and fauna under the Amazon rainforest canopy, and learn how the indigenous people thrive in this challenging environment. The Amazon is the most biologically diverse place on Earth and you’ll discover more about the amazing flora and fauna here, as well as learning about the incredible medicinal plants that are found in this region. After lunch, you have the rest of the afternoon free to hang out at the lodge with a book or continue exploring the surrounding area on your own. If you’d prefer to hike a little more this afternoon, you can head out with our naturalist guide on little-known trails that pass by the homes of some of the rarest animals in the rainforest. This evening we’ll brave the jungle on foot to look for tarantulas, insects and frogs that come out after dark.

Amazon Lodgings, Amazon jungle (All meals)

Day 10 — Return to Cuzco, depart for home

This morning we leave the rainforest and take a boat back to Puerto Maldonado, where we’ll catch a short flight to Cuzco. This is the last day of your trip in Peru, if you have time to spare after the trip, we’re happy to give you suggestions on how to make the most of it. On the other hand, if you’re on your way home today, we’ll send you back refreshed and invigorated from the great food, exercise, rest and adventures you’ll have had with us in Peru!

Useful Info

No Forced Single Supplement:

Most other travel companies charge all solo travellers a single supplement fee. We don't! When it comes to accommodation, our trip fares are based on a twin-share rate, which means we'll match you up with another person of the same gender to share a room with. If there's no one suitable to share with, there's no forced single supplement! Having said that, if you specifically request your own room, you can opt to pay the additional single supplement fee.

Trip start:

If you arrive on the first day of your trip, an Active Adventures South America representative will meet you at the Cuzco airport (CUZ) (flights to arrive by 11am) and take you to your accommodation. If you’re already in Cuzco, you’ll meet your trip leader and the rest of your group in the lobby of your joining hotel at 12 noon.

Trip end:

On the last day of your trip we’ll fly you to Cuzco airport where your trip ends.

Recommended flights:

You need to arrive in Cuzco by 10.30am at the latest on the first day of the trip. If you have extra time, we recommend heading to Cuzco early for more time to acclimatise to the high altitude, and to spend as long as possible in this incredible town! Most international flights get to Lima in the evening, so you’ll probably fly in to Lima at night and then on to Cuzco the following morning. On the last day of the trip, we recommend booking your flight to depart out of Cuzco any time after 6pm. If you are considering other flight times, let us know and we’ll see what we can do to make your trip run smoothly.

The ‘Jaguar’ is an active adventure trip around Peru. We’ve chosen the places we stay for their location, cleanliness and charm – not the number of channels available on the television! Many of the places we stay are off-the-beatentrack and set in amazing locations. For example, on both Inca Trail treks we’re under canvas, though it’s pretty fancy camping. Our porters carry tents and supplies, cook meals, boil drinking water for us and take care of everything around camp. On the nights where we stay in Cuzco we have chosen good lodgings, ideally situated close to the main attractions without being too central, in order to avoid the most touristy and noisy areas. It’s worth keeping in mind that Peru is a noisy place – people here have a festive way of looking at life and often enjoy beeping their horns and playing loud music! We have chosen the quietest areas practical in order for people to get the best sleep possible (although after hiking the Inca Trail trek most people find they have no trouble sleeping!), and earplugs are recommended in this energetic and lively part of the world. In contrast, the jungle lodges in the Amazon are very tranquil and quiet.

The ‘Jaguar’ is an active hiking trip, and has options to suit a wide range of fitness levels and outdoor experience. If you keep reasonably active and like to give things a go, you’re likely to enjoy the trip much more. Typically, hikes on the ‘Jaguar’ trip range between three and six hours to complete, with longer hikes on the Inca trails. If you think you’d prefer a more relaxed pace, we recommend checking out our ‘Capybara’ trip. Please get in touch with us if you’d like to chat about the various options.

  • Jaguar Trip - December 2018

“This trip was fantastic! The group size - 5 - was perfect in that allowed for individual attention and yet meet great people as well. The guides - Wilson and Johan - were wonderful and really made for a good experience. This was my first trip with Active Adventures and I will definitely travel with them again. I am a seasoned traveler and Active Adventures was among one of the best tour groups I have used.”
Beth Muehl – Maryland, United States January 2019
  • Awesome Peruvian Adventure!

“Every detail was taken care of from the lodging in Cusco, ground transportation to/from the airport and sites, meals, there wasn't anything I needed to worry about other than to show up and have fun. The first couple of days in Cusco was perfect to get acclimated and familiar with the area. Wilson was great in answering any questions we had and making sure we were taken care of. Johan was our guide on the Inca Trail part of the trip, and I was very impressed with him! He wore so many hats and was extremely knowledgable not only about all the historical sites but also the plant life, animals, and all the history of the Incas and the trail. He knew when to give us the space to enjoy the hike and scenery and when to show us something of interest. He even went out of his way to tell other visitors when they were doing something wrong, like sitting on top of stone walls of the ruins. You could tell he was passionate about these historical sites and preservation of them so future generations could enjoy them. ”

  • Epic!

“Machu Picchu has always been my dream destination for years. I really enjoyed all the activities throughout this trip. Active and the local guides definitely spent a lot of effort in setting out this trip. I very much appreciate all the support and guidance.”

  • Machu Picchu Baby

“We feel lucky to have discovered Active Adventures as our Jaguar trip was outstanding. We have prior done some pretty adventurous trips, many self booked/arranged, and were looking for a true complete package and Active Adventures absolutely impressed. The pre-trip material was high quality and ensured we were prepared. We were extremely impressed with the accomodations, to include the camp setup made possible by the superb porters (fresh popcorn and camp seats at midday hike breaks!) and a ready campsite with dining tent, table and chairs *and* a toilet tent! Our guide, Erick, was quite personable, extremely knowledgeable, and made certain everything was in order (amazing meals at restaurants in Cusco, porters, permits, campsites, etc). The only downside to the trip was the heat and humidity in the jungle (we knew it was summer, but coming from Cusco it was a bear) that we couldn’t escape due to the lodge not having air conditioning or even room fans (power via generator only during limited hours), though seeing the wild animals was pretty neat. Add to it all our travel buddies, on our same tour, are amazing people who we are already talking with about touring Patagonia together!”
Lee Schoeppner – Nevada, United States December 2018
  • Peru 10 Day JAGUAR

“Highly recommend this tour and our guide, Eric! The guide book and packing list, provided by Active Adventures, were perfect tools to prepare. Cusco and and the 4 day trek on the Inca trail were great. The camping experience was way better than I had expected!!! The porters are such hard workers and made sure our tents were all set before we arrived to each campsite. We had a chef who made delicious meals. A very clean toliet set up for us to use. After Machu Picchu, we went to the Amazon. It was hot and moist. Seeing wild animals and having drinks at the bar were great! I would just would recommend having fans in the rooms.
Overall, fantastic experience! We already plan to book a tour in Patagonia with Active Adventures! ”
Zuly Schoeppner – Nevada, United States December 2018
  • Jaguar Tour

“This was a trip of a lifetime! From biking through a beautiful valley, to hiking the Inca trail in four days, then jetting over to the Amazon. It was a whirlwind of awesome! All the while having every day stress free and preplanned. 10/10 would recommend to anyone. Can't wait for our next Active Adventure!”

“We took our family of six on this amazing trip. Wilson was a perfect tour guide. He spoke very good English and catered to our every need. He was very patient answering my children's constant questions. We ate the most incredible food and saw so much of Peru. It really was the trip of a lifetime!”

  • Unforgettable Moments in Peru

“I did the Jaguar trip in October and I enjoyed every moment from arrival to departure. Everything was taken care of by the programm and by our amazing guide Zac. The group was small, accommodations very comfortable and food indescribable. I loved hiking on the Lares trail. The crew took really good care of us and the equipment was perfect. I always felt save during the whole trip. I definitely recommend travelling with Active Adventures. Enjoy your trips!”
Rebecca Schleicher – Bavaria, Germany November 2018
  • Andes Adventure!

“We loved the Jaguar tour. No matter how many pictures you've seen of Machu Picchu, or the Andes, seeing it for ourselves -- and hiking the Lares Trek -- was even better than we anticipated. The organization was great; our guide was fantastic (thank you, Zach!). The Peruvian Amazon is also fascinating; it was great to see 1000+ year-old trees -- and all kinds of wild life. ”
Jennifer Howse – Ontario, Canada November 2018
  • Incredible Experience!

“From the initial contact with Active Adventures to the end of our trip, the staff in New Zealand and the guides we had in Peru were thorough, personable and professional making the visit to Peru extremely enjoyable and adventurous. Everything went like clockwork and Gustavo handling any problems that arose with good humor and grace. Hiking the Inca Trail was demanding and profoundly rewarding due to our guide, Puma, keeping us moving while also developing in us a deep respect for the traditions of the people and land. The remainder of our trip to the Amazon basin and Lake Titicaca were also informative and interesting experiences with all the modes of travel and sights along the way. There was never a dull moment. Our fellow travelers were a great group and we all pulled together to help each other, when necessary. I am already considering my next Active Adventures trip.”

  • Wonderful Experience

“Our trip was beyond our expectations- the hike was challenging but worth every step. The scenery was breathtaking. Our guides were outstanding in regard to providing us with background history and information. We also must say we have great respect for the work and care provided to us by our porters.”

  • Not Sure How We'll Top This Trip

“This truly was the trip of a lifetime. My wife set it up for my 50th birthday and I could not be happier. Our Guide Erick, was the best, and Johann (our Inca Trail Guide from Quechua Treks, Peru) guided us on the Inca Trail. Both I consider friends now and hope we keep in touch. I've wanted to see Machu Picchu since I was a boy, so I was really looking forward to the trip. What I did not know was Machu Picchu was not the highlight of the trip. I'd have to say the Inca Trail was, with Lake Titicaca second, and the Jungle third, although the last two could be switched up a bit. Peru has so much to offer, I know that now but did not then. I love the people, the culture, and the scenery. I could go on for days but suffice to say, we have thought long and hard about a trip to top this one, spending hours and days on it, and thus far have come up empty. While Peru was exciting, adventurous, and wondrous at the same time, I truly feel Active Adventures made the trip the best it could be. I don't see how it could have been any better. Active Adventures was so good we are looking to plan our next adventure through them. We are not wealthy people and I initially considered the trip very expensive, but after going on it I feel it was money very well spent and would do it again without hesitation.”
Mark Courtenay – Maine, United States November 2018
  • Incredible Trip

“I had an absolute blast trekking through Peru with our group and guide leader. The Jaguar Trip with Active South America did not disappoint! From our time in Cuzco, hiking the Sacsayhuaman fortress, biking through the Sacred Valley and hiking the Pisac ruins, our Lares Inca 3-day hike through the Andes Mountains, visiting Machu Picchu and also the Amazon Jungle - this trip had it all. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, local culture and history of Peru and the Incas and he made our trip very safe and enjoyable. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to challenge themselves with the Incan hike and experience the culture and beauty that Peru has to offer. Truly amazing!”
Alain Vallee – New Brunswick, Canada November 2018
  • A Vista that Must be Seen to be Believed!

“The 3 days of hiking in the cold rain on the Classic Inca Trail were worth every last ache in my knees and quads when we were treated to the sun opening up the view of the amazing Machu Picchu. This is definitely a tough hike and a week later my 63 yr old knees are just starting to forgive me for the abuse I put them through to see this wonderful place. The porters running those trails with our gear will always leave me amazed. How often do we truly challenge our limits? History, culture, amazing food on the trail, comfy tents (complete with hot water bottles for our feet) all added to the trip of a lifetime.”
Peg DeBiasi – Florida, United States November 2018
  • 2018 Jaguar trip with Gustavo

“My trip to Peru was wonderful! Gustavo, our general guide for the whole trip, was great: informative, warm, attentive to all of our big or little needs. I always appreciated how he would escort us wherever we needed to go: from getting cash at an ATM to going shopping in the local artisans market. He was always willing to translate and even help bargain, if needed! The other guides for our Classic Inca trail trip and for our jungle excursions were equally informative and fun and engaging. Puma, our Inca trail guide, infused our trek with fascinating archaeological history and a deep sense of sacredness in the places we were passing through. I felt really well taken care of at the same time as I was challenged and exhilarated by the sights, sounds, smells of each of the new places I was exploring. I loved the level of activity and found it happily affirming that I am strong and fit and still able to do the things I love to do at 61 years old. My fellow travel companions were fun and interesting and we supported each other when challenged by anything from high altitude hiking to biking or kayaking. No one felt left behind. I will definitely look at other trips you offer and recommend Active Adventures to my friends.”

  • Expectations Exceded!!!

“Thank you. Start to finish this was the most incredible trip I have ever taken. Your company is organized, responds rapidly to emails and delivers on its promises. Great tour, knowledgeable guides, and well planned. The Inca trail was challenging both emotionally and physically, but the encouragement of the group and the team leader helped me to push through to the end. I never imagined that camping out on a mountain could be so spectacular - great locations and amazing food as well (even a portable toilet!!) I cannot wait to book my next adventure.”
Genie Tartell – New York, United States November 2018
  • Perfect trip

“I had never taken such a trip alone. I had no worries, within a few hours we were all friends. Our guide Eric was very knowledgeable we could not stump him. He went out of his way to make sure we were all comfortable. The food on the trip was gourmet in every respect. The meals served on the trail were unbelievable not only taste but presentation. I was a little slower than other hikers but Eric and Lucianna were very patient and helpful. I would highly recommend this trip to all.”
Rosanne Rushton – New York, United States October 2018
  • Trip of a Lifetime!

“What a finely tuned operation Active Adventures has. Our trip to Peru was flawless. The quaint hotel in Cusco, our young and helpful guide Gustava, the food - AA spared no expense, we dined in some of the finest restaurants. Hiking the Inca trail the whole reason for our trip to Peru.... was brilliant only made even better by having such a spiritual and knowledgeable guide in Puma.”
Lena Clement – California, United States October 2018
  • Couldn’t Ask for More

“The trip was amazing. Every little detail was taken care of. Our guide was great and worked with the group in a way that everyone got what they wanted/needed out of the trip. I really can’t say enough about the Lares trail and the support along the way. The food was almost as incredible as the views. The schedule was perfect. Machu Picchu was everything that we expected and our time in the jungle was great. I highly recommend the Jaguar trip.”
Dave Ross – Colorado, United States October 2018
  • Jaguar, September 2018

“We had history, scenery, and great travel companions - all while exploring the Peru countryside. Our Jaquar trip gave us a chance to see classic historic sites, but the highlight was the less traveled, beautiful and challenging Lares Trek. Our guide and the support team were wonderful, planning every detail. We came home feeling refreshed and accomplished, and looking forward to another Active Adventure.”

  • Trip of a Lifetime

“I had an amazing Jaguar Trip with Active Adventures. I wanted to hike the Inca Trail to celebrate turning 60 and could not find anyone to make the trip with me so I went on my own. I was apprehensive about the adventure but also very excited. When I checked into the hotel, The Royal Inka I, it was comfortable, clean, in a fabulous location and the staff were considerate & helpful. There was a water cooler just for Active Adventure Tourists so there was no need to buy water and the breakfasts were tasty & filling and introduced you to some local food items. I think what impressed me most about the tour was how friendly, thoughtful and kind everyone associated with the tour were. This included hotel staff, personnel who drove the vans, organized the bikes, carried supplies up the Inca Trail and especially the guides themselves. I was also impressed with the food which included restaurants, surprised lunch stops, on the trail etc. I never felt unsafe in contrast I felt very well cared for.”

  • Amazing Journey of Discovery

“I loved, loved, LOVED this trip! I've always considered myself a "close to the ground" traveler - though the sights may be spectacular, I go to experience the culture and meet the people. To that end, I have equated spending less, to avoiding chain hotels and Americanized food.

I chose this trip for 4 reasons: 1) Level of activity and adventure (experiences), 2) It was all inclusive, 3) I wanted to travel with a small group, and 4) Active Adventures has excellent customer ratings.

I was NOT disappointed, in any way. We stayed in very nice (much better than my usual), locally owned and managed hotels. We ate delicious local food. I met the local people, and learned about the culture. Every day was filled with discovery, excitement, and activity. I was never bored AND I was never stressed. Someone else - one of the my fabulous guides - always took care of all the details.

Gustavo, our primary guide was fabulous! His charm and sense of humor are natural and delightful. He seemed to anticipate our needs, before we did. We were family (in a really good way). A truly amazing guy.

Puma, my Inca Trail guide was incredibly experienced and knowledgeable. He is a wealth of information about Peru, the people, the history, and Incan religion, culture, and architecture. I learned so much from him and enjoyed countless hours of conversation.

As someone who has limited knowledge of other languages, I was absolutely amazed at the fluency of our guides. Both Gustavo and Puma had superb English. Of course, their Spanish was flawless as well. In the case of Puma, who's native tongue is Quechua, I was dealing with a true multilingual. It was quite a kick to offer up a new word or slang phrase. He took pleasure equal to mine in learning something new.

Although I didn't take this trip anticipating that it would be "the trip of a lifetime", it truly was.
Many thanks for an amazing experience!”

  • Lares Trek!!!

“Peru was an amazingly beautiful country full of kind people! Our trip leader, Daniel, went above and beyond to make our trip special as he had to work around strikes closing roads and unseasonable weather. His knowledge of the cultural sites was as exceptional as the views along the Lares Trek and at Machu Picchu!”

  • Fell in Love with Peru!

“From start to finish the Jaguar trip and Lares Inca Trail was excellent! Zac, the guide, was such a lovely, attentive, knowledgeable and humorous person, whose skill at melding a group and dealing with any issues was a key part of the success. There was a satisfying mix of activities but the Lares Valley hike over the 15,700 foot Pumahuanca Pass was a definite highlight. Sumptuous meals prepared on the way were both healthy, delicious and plentiful. Some fabulous restaurants. Machu Picchu is just as special as I believed it would be. Going to the jungle added to our learning of Peru... yes we did see a tarantula! The trip lives up to the billing. Highly recommended!”

  • Amazing Experience and Awesome Company

“Right from the start I felt great with this company as they answered all my questions right away, but when the guide met us at the airport right away after our flight was delayed for half the day I felt super safe and in good hands!! The trip was amazing! Everything was planned, organized, easy, and fun! They were able to change the food everywhere for my vegan diet, and took us to great restaurants, set up everything from tents to hotels, to anything we needed. Everyone who worked with them was super nice! And they planned little surprises along the way that was awesome!! I highly recommend them!”

  • Great Trip and Experience

“Overall, the trip was superb. Active Adventures went above and beyond what I expected. In the past, i have not been a big fan of doing organized tours, but because of the experience I had on this, my first experience with Active Adventures, I fully expect to book additional trips with them and don't think I would ever be disappointed.”

  • Jaguar with Daniel

“I am not a fan of guided tours, but this one was not the typical guided tour. Everything was planned perfectly with our skill level and interests in mind. Daniel was a conscientious, knowledgeable guide for whom we developed respect and affection. ”

  • Unforgettable

“The entire Jaguar trip was really fun — learning our way around Cusco, visiting Sacsayhuaman and the Sacred Valley, and seeing a bit of Amazonia. But the highlight for my husband and me was hiking the Inca trail. We had heard from friends that it was an adventure not to be missed, and we were not disappointed. It’s incredibly beautiful and a wonderful learning experience. And is always the case on guided group trips, your fellow travelers, as well as the guide, are a big factor in how much fun you have. We were lucky on both counts. Our guide on the trail, Wilson, was the best! He was incredibly knowledgeable about Inca history and culture, as well as the flora, and brought humor to every occasion. And our fellow hikers were great. Because we saw and learned so much much about the Inca civilization on the trail, arriving at Machu Picchu didn’t feel so much like the high point of the hike but rather one more beautiful and interesting stop. The weather cooperated with just a few spritzes of rain, although we heard that a group that hiked the trail a week before us had rain for 3 days! We had no problems with altitude sickness, and it probably helped that we arrived 1-1/2 days ahead of the official trip start. We were in reasonably good shape and found the trail challenging but definitely within our ability. Mostly it takes perseverance. We enjoyed visiting the Amazon region and seeing creatures that we’ve never seen in person before. But it was very hot (not surprisingly) and despite drinking lots of water, I suffered from heat exhaustion the first day. We were pretty inexperienced in traveling to non-English speaking countries, but it didn’t take long before we felt right at home. With our smattering of Spanish (and I’m talking single words, not phrases or sentences), we were able to get around just fine, as most of the locals we encountered spoke at least enough English for us to communicate. And when they didn’t, I used my trusty Lonely Planet Spanish phrase book. We felt totally safe in Cusco and Lima, following basic common sense rules. This was our second Active Adventures trip, and as before, they were totally organized and professional and managed to keep things moving along smoothly, even when our original guide for the overall trip fell ill a few days in and had to be replaced with another guide. The food was delicious (even on the trail). We actually connected 3 Active Adventures trips for our South America visit, and will definitely travel with them again, perhaps to Patagonia next time.”

  • Aptly Named Tour company

“They told us they were “Active Adventures” and it was! Every day brought a new adventure with a variety of activity levels from low (bus rides) to very high (hiking the Inca trail). Overall, the trip was well-organized and the attention to detail (safe restaurants, drinking water in hotels, arranging laundry service) was greatly appreciated.”

  • So Many Amazing Surprises!

“Our guide was a delight, well informed and interesting. I was so surprised at the great accommodations on the trail and in the jungle. I felt very well taken care of. The chef on the trail was a food genius. This was our first tour, so pleased with all.”

“Eric Farfan was an amazing guide. He was very knowledgeable, patient, kind, and had so much respect for my fear of heights. Which I did overcome while hiking the Inca Trail.”

  • Machu Picchu is Amazing! Completing the Hike is Victory!

“Machu Picchu is one of the "New 7 Wonders of the World" - on the same list as the Great Wall of China. Hiking the Inca Trail at 62 is the most difficult challenge physically I have undertaken. But I did it!! The exhilaration of crossing Sleeping Woman Pass at 14,200 feet is almost (but not quite) as amazing as our first views of Machu Picchu from above. We loved the trip - the food, the sherpas, our guide, and the miracles of history and the 21 civilizations of Peru, culminating with the Inca Empire. How did they build this? Miracles of engineering as remarkable as the pyramids in Egypt!”
Brian Alter – Texas, United States May 2018
  • Trekking the Inca Trail

“We had an amazing trip trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu and then Flying to Puerto Maldonado to explore the Amazon Rain forest. We were incredibly well cared for by our Active Adventures trip guide, Zack. The 4 day trek to Machu Pichu was guided by Wilson. He made sure that each of us was able to complete the trip, by encouraging us and teaching us about the spiritual nature of the area. He watched our pace carefully and made sure that each of us felt supported. Our group of 4 close friends will be forever grateful for the experiences that we had on this trip.”

  • Fantastic trek to Machu Picchu!

“We thoroughly enjoyed the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu. It was a trip of a lifetime that was made special by our two guides, Luis and Gilbert. Our main guide, Luis' wealth of knowledge about Inca history and the temples/ruins we saw along the way and when we arrived in MP made the experience ever so enriching by giving context to everything we were seeing. The scenery is breathtaking on the Inca trail. It is the best trip I have taken so far in my life.”
Vincent Pedre – New York, United States January 2018
  • Incredible Peruvian Adventure

“The Jaguar trip included a bit of everything. While hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu was my favorite experience, I also have wonderful memories of our jungle adventure with all the fascinating wildlife and our time on and around Lake Titicaca, exploring some native culture.”
Carmen Hamlin – Virginia, United States January 2018
  • The majesty of Peru

“Peru is chock full of natural beauty and culture, and Active Adventures provides the best way to see it. From the culturally significant urban center and Incan capital of Cusco, to the challenging and rewarding Inca Trail, to the verdant Amazon basin and Puerto Maldonado, and finally the breathtaking Lake Titicaca. Every stop along the tour provides insight into the cultures and peoples that comprise the ancient and modern day Peru. If you are ready for an adventure look no further. ”

  • Jaguar Trip 2017 - Unforgettable Experience

“Dear Active Adventures, all we can say - an unforgettable experience. Thanks to Erick our guide, he was great company, all the knowledge of Peru and the Inca he shared, his sense of humor, his love for good food and the odd Pisco Sour, and.... thank you for the flowers Erick. Also a big thank you to Johan, our guide on the Inca Trail. He made the Inca Trail "a walk in the park", even though it was a tough hike, not to be underestimated. What an experience! It was wonderful to share Machu Picchu with someone who grew up on its green lawns and the passion that came with shearing his knowledge.
As its states - Active Adventures - this is an active trip, we were on the move all day, every day! Loved it! We will join you again on another trip!
    Renate Wiemers – n/a, Namibia January 2018
  • Peru, Cusco

“Everything you said you would do you did. I had no need for anything, absolutely everything catered for. Daniel our tour guide set his presence just perfectly including how much knowledge he shared, setting the pace and gently pushing where I needed to be pushed to get to our destination. I struggled with the altitude and I didnt get the correct level of fitness prior to my holiday but Daniel never saw this as an issue instead he pre planned contingencies.
I would always recommend Active Adventures to anyone wanting to lead a more exciting holiday that doesn't involve sitting on a sunbed for two weeks. I felt safe, enriched and empowered by my achievements.
Thank you so much to everyone involved. ”

  • An Awesome Amazing Trip

“My husband and I decided to do this bucket trip to celebrate our 70th and 75th birthdays. While we don't hike and come from sea level flatlands, we are active and have skied in altitude. This is our 3rd trip with Active and we continue to be impressed with their attention to detail. Peru has amazing scenery, history and the food is off the charts. The highlight obviously was the Inca Trail Hike. I was nervous and concerned that we had bitten off more than was reasonable. We were with our friends (another couple much younger) and the small group was great. I think we tended to be at the back third of the hikers but "slow and steady" was the mantra. Our guide (Ilber) and porters were great. Food and accommodations fabulous. I can understand why it is compared to the Camino Trail as I found it very spiritual in the sense that you learn a lot about yourself and what limits you can push yourself too. It was both gruelling and awesome at the same time. I also think that you learn so much on the trail about the history and when you actually get to Machu Picchu it is the icing on the cake. Speaking of cake,Donatella our chef baked us a cake on the trail. Food was definitely Top Chef quality. Our guide off the trail (Daniel) was also fabulous. I got a bug on the Amazon part of the trip and he went out of his way to get me Gatorade, crackers and went to town to get some rehydration packets. He was funny and always there during the trip taking care of every issue.”
Doris Hellenbart – Michigan, United States December 2017
  • Wow

“Absolutely one of the best trips I have ever done. We don't usually do organized group tours but this was a perfect choice for this location, especially including the well organized hiking, biking and kayaking activities. It turned out to be the most amazing adventure, very challenging but the staff made sure it was always safe and fun. We would do another trip with Active without hesitation and we would love to have Erick as the leader. He was very professional, on top of everything and loads of fun! ”
David DeMars – Illinois, United States November 2017
  • Amazing Experience

“My wife and I had the trip of a lifetime! The sights and views were breathtaking! And the cultural experience was so unique! We felt like royalty the way we were treated by our guides and porters on the trail. Definitely a great way to experience what Peru has to offer!”
Joe Amstutz – Ohio, United States November 2017
  • Really loved Peru and the Jaguar itinerary

“The Jaguar trip was a great overall experience for us - we loved the itinerary and the mix of accommodation, the activities - sightseeing and really enjoyed learning about the immense and fascinating cultural depth the country has to offer.”

  • Karen & Dave's Peru Adventure, October 2017

“Simply, Peru is an amazing destination. Credit to Active Adventures, you made Peru come alive for us in this busy and varied 2 week adventure. We experienced it all, people, history, the wonder of the Incas, the smell of the Amazon rain forest, and Andean life on a lake. Every day brought new experiences. Every meal was excellent, both in restaurants, or on a trail. Logistics-wise, you never missed a beat, on anything. Well done.”

  • Best Ever!

“Just returned from the Jaguar trip/Lares Trail option and can't say enough good things about the whole experience. We had some mishaps along the way...sickness, stolen/lost passports, etc, and our experienced guide, ZAC, was steady, kind, and sure (and had a great sense of humor). We were well taken care of, well-fed, had great sleeping accommodations, and had so much fun... I highly recommend Active Adventures! You will not be disappointed!”

  • 7 Day Jaguar Adventure

“I have nothing but positive reviews for this week-long adventure of a lifetime (I would have loved to stay on for the full 14 day experience, but unfortunately work responsibilities limited my time away). As a seasoned solo traveler/hiker, and it being my 30th birthday week, I must rank this trip as my top guided-tour experience. Everything from the Lares Inca Trail experience (with its less crowded characteristics making it a much more attractive alternative to the Classic Inca Trail, at least to me), to the accommodations, the food (which can be catered to most anyone’s dietary needs, at least from what I experienced both first hand and from others in the group...still not sure how the chef/porters can transport all that fresh food and whip up such fantastic meals miles and miles from the nearest town!?), our tour leader Daniel and other affiliated guides and porters...quite honestly above and beyond what my original expectations were for the trip! I met several fellow hikers from around the world with whom I bonded and would now call lifelong friends, and have numerous photos and memories to last a lifetime! I would also like to mention that during our 4 day/3 night hike, we encountered several other hikers along the trail who were with various other tour companies (some of which I had researched prior to booking with Active Adventures), and were told several stories about various mishaps and/or negative experiences they were having with their tour leaders...perhaps we lucked out with our fantastic tour leader, but I definitely do not regret for a second my decision to ring in the third decade of my life with Active Adventures! I can’t thank you guys enough and will definitely keep you in mind for my next hiking adventure, wherever that may be :)”
Kevin Bui – New Hampshire, United States October 2017
  • Erick the Great

“I call my review Erick the Great because that is what he was!! It was a trip of a lifetime but I feel like I will likely be back to Peru. I really enjoyed the country, accommodations and incredible scenery.”

  • I'd Definitely Choose Active Again!

“I had a great time. The tour guides were personable and very engaging. Even on the activities I had never done before, or at least not for years, they were encouraging and helpful. I would definitely choose Active again.”
Monica Spangler – Virginia, United States October 2017
  • Judy and Don's trip to Peru

“Active Adventures provides first class trips. Not to first class hotels, that are isolated from real people, but first class adventures that allow you to experience the people, the culture, as well as the environment. Erick took exceptional care of us. This is our third trip with Active Adventures (New Zealand, Nepal, and now Peru), and they have all been awesome!

The guides have always been excellent. They make sure we have a great time, and most importantly make sure we are safe. Our last trip was to Everest Base Camp; the guide made me turn around the day we were supposed to go to Base Camp because I had the beginning of flu symptoms. As it was I ended up getting very sick, but if she had not turned me around my doctor told me I would have permanent heart or lung damage.

Erick was an outstanding guide! He really took care of us and made sure we had a great time. His knowledge of the area was outstanding - culture, history, food, and plants. He was extremely personable. He is one of the best guides in the world!

The trip to Machu Picchu is unbelievable and tough - so get hiking and book your trip now!”

  • Taste of Peru

“What an amazing trip! 14 days really gives a good taste of Peru. From high elevations of Cusco, Sacred Valley and the Lares Trail to the mysticism of Macchu Picchu, on to the loud cicadas of the jungle and the floating islands and welcoming Amantai family on lake Titicaca, this is a bucket list trip that will give you a taste of Peru that will make you want to return.”

  • More Than a Trip, an Amazing Experience!

“Having had years of wonderful, personally planned trips, we were a bit apprehensive about signing on to a group tour. However AA's communications from our first enquiry to our return home was aimed at making the adventure better than we could have done on our own. Delving into the culture, understanding the history, experiencing the food, and actively enjoying the Peruvian's Peru with a superb guide left me anticipating my next adventure with Active Adventures.”

  • Our Peruvian Adventure

“We had an amazing trip with Active Adventures - South America. Everything was extremely well-planned, and our guide was knowledgeable, kind, helpful and always more than willing to share tips, facts, and insights about her country. The trip from our first meeting to our parting at the airport was active, filled with amazing sights, and very well coordinated. We were thrilled to hike the Inca Trail, to see amazing archaeological sites in the Cuzco area and to explore the jungle and Lake Titicaca regions. We will definitely be looking at Active Adventures for trips in the future. Thanks for providing a wonderful and unforgettable holiday.”

  • Amazing Trip

“The Peru Jaguar trip we took in May, was the most exciting and adventurous trip we have ever made in our lives! At 70, I was skeptical as to whether I could complete the Inca Trail or not. With Johan's help and support, I not only accomplished my goal, but was extremely satisfied with our total active adventure trip. It seemed as if every time I turned my head, there was another exhilarating scene to photograph. The rest of the trip included the amazon rainforest, and spending the night with a local family on Lake Titicaca which was great. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wishing to explore the world's unknown places that only a few select get to experience. Our guide Erick Farfan was an exceptional young man who went out of his way not just for us, but the entire group. I've never had someone so attentive to every detail to make all of us happy. His choice of restaurants allowed all of us to experience the local foods and were all very tasty. Kudos to Erick, Johan and the rest of the crew for making my experience once in a lifetime which I will never stop talking about.”

  • Amazing Adventure

“what an amazing adventure we had! we enjoyed every bit of our Jaguar trip and would recommend Active Adventures to anyone who asks! The trip was very well organized and the guides were all informative and amazing. Our main guide, Erick Farfan was the best! he always made sure everything ran smoothly and had to deal with many different personalities on this trip but made it all work. The Inka trail was a tough trail for me due to the altitude but what an amazing feeling once you complete it and arrive at the sun gate! We thoroughly enjoyed the jungle as well as the visit to lake titicaca and our local family that we stayed with. look forward to our next amazing adventure with you! Hoping to do Patagonia soon!”

  • Go and See Machu Picchu and Experience Peru.

“Our trip to Peru was fantastic. We hiked, biked and paddled in Peru. Every day was an adventure. I like that we got to experience the real Peru. I didn't feel like a tourist, I felt like an adventurer. We walked through markets, met children along the Inca trail, ate delicious food and even stayed at a local family's home. We were treated very well. We were blown away by the chef's culinary skill while trekking along the Inca trail. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable. Our group was small, also a huge plus. We will book another trip with Active Adventures. This was our second. Small groups, good food, active friends, great leadership, well run. What is not to like? Thank you, all.”

  • Still smiling....

“Words can't describe the amazing adventure of a lifetime my best buddy and I experienced in Peru with your Active Adventure team! The smiles on our face every time thinking about it paint the perfect picture of our wonderful, amazing experience and trip of a lifetime! Our guide, Daniel , was so attentive, thoughtful, fun and enthusiastic. We felt like we were travelling with a caring friend who was so excited to share his beautiful country with us! We were challenged and encouraged, and enjoyed absolutely every minute of this amazing trip! It would not have been the same without our smiling leader Daniel!!”

  • Active in Peru.

“I loved my jaguar trip to Peru. The history and Inca ruins were fascinating, the local people we met were all friendly and welcoming, the new friends I made on the trip were lots of fun(we were a great team) - and I loved the Llamas! I saw the best of Peru on foot, by bike and by kayak - a great way to experience such a richly cultural and historic country.”

  • A-MA-ZING!!

“We had such a great time. Every day was a new and exciting adventure. Our guide, Daniel, made sure we were well taken care of and we learned and enjoyed so much of the Peruvian culture. I would unhesitatingly recommend this trip!”
Jackie Kao – New York, United States May 2017
  • Epic Adventure. 5 stars

The group was outstanding; the guides were top notch. The Lares Inca trail was the hardest hike I have ever done because of the elevation, but the cultural immersion and glam camping softened the effort. Hot water bottles at bedtime anyone? Fleece liners for your sleeping bag? The trips to the Amazon and Lake Titikaka were equally wonderful, but the combination of the physical challenge with the people in the mountains, and the incredible scenery moving from the Lares to the Sacred Valley just couldn't be beat. If anyone is into birds, there is no better trip to observe an astounding diversity.”
Susan Winkler – Massachusetts, United States April 2017
  • Awesome Jaguar

“This trip was flat-out amazing! Peru is incredibly beautiful and its climate diverse, and we saw so much and we did so much. Our traveling companions were terrific and we laughed a lot. Our guides were so capable and so knowledgeable that we felt immersed in the culture. We could really feel the magic of the Incas and the reverence for Pacha Mama which continues to this day.”
Jackie Olson – Minnesota, United States February 2017

  • Jaguar - April 2016

“Zac was an incredible tour guide - he was very knowledgeable, encouraging and had a great sense of humor!! This was the experience of a lifetime - hiking the Inca Trail, trekking in the Amazon Jungle and seeing monkeys, caiman, capybaras, a sloth and a tarantula, and boating around Lake Titicaca - it truly was an "Active Adventure" that we'll never forget!! ”

  • Fun Adventure

“Active Adventures does an excellent job of organizing adventure trips that allow you to actively explore the country and experience the local culture. This trip was an outstanding opportunity to see the entire country of Peru. It was wonderful to hike the Inca Trail and see Machu Pichu, explore the beautiful town of Cusco, visit the Amazon as well as the different islands of Lake Titicaca.”

  • Jaguar Adventure

“Loved the Jaguar trip, and especially our guide, Erick. The trip covered a lot of ground over two weeks and we learned a lot about Peru. Food was amazing! The Lares trail was tough but stunning. Really enjoyed the Amazon and Lake Titicaca - especially the local experiences on the island in the lake. If Active Adventures has options in other areas where I am looking to go, they will be my first consideration!! Thanks for another wonderful trip!”

  • Jaguar - What an Inca-redible Trip!!!!

“Travelling alone to South America seemed a little daunting but Zac made the whole experience easy and unforgettable. Despite not knowing anyone in my group at the outset we all got on extremely well and thanks to Zac's invaluable knowledge learnt so much about an amazing country.
The itinerary was extremely well planned and varied, from hiking and kayaking to becoming familiar with the local culture and people.
The food was fantastic - we even ate cake halfway up the mountain!!
This whole experience has left me with an appetite for more and I can't wait to do it again.
Thank you Zac and Active Adventures. You truly made 2016 for me :)”

  • Jaguar, November 2016

“This trip truly was an 'active adventure', and exceeded my expectations in so many ways.
Peru is such a beautiful country, rich in history, and culture. All of our guides were superb, but Erick as our trip host absolutely made this trip worry free, a true learning experience, and SO much fun! If it's all in the details, Erick and Active covered them all and more!
I arrived as a solo traveler and left having made friends and memories that I will treasure always.
Thank you Active Adventures, until next time!

  • Phil and Marje

“Wonderful trip. We really enjoyed Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the days over in the jungle. The best thing was our guide, Erick, who was interesting, informative, extremely well prepared but most important a lot of fun to travel with. He's one of the best guides we've ever had.”
Phil Clark – Colorado, United States December 2016
  • Machu Picchu Oct 2016

“Two friends and I were part of the Jaguar Trip to southern Peru. We elected to do only the Machu Picchu portion and not Lake Titicaca or jungle portions. Cuzco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu were well worth the trip. There is so much to learn about the ancient Peruvian cultures. Of 13 people 2 developed altitude problems and Active Adventure staff were excellent in caring for them and adjusting schedules and hikes to match the remaining hikers. I credit them with making the trip so enjoyable. This is my second trip with Active and I recommend them highly. The food and support personnel were top notch.”
Scott Noe – Virginia, United States December 2016

The best part of an Active trip is having supper every night with your new friends with a host who knows the best places to go and picks up the tab. (so to speak)”
Dave Bacon – Alberta, Canada December 2016

“This trip was an absolutely outstanding experience for myself and my husband! Everything was so wonderful! Our guide Erick selected outstanding places to eat and made superb meal recommendations. I am thankful that he was able to control the weather while we were there. The people, landscape, culture and architecture were over the top. Erick was so patient and fun to be with. Our group couldn't have been better traveling companions. All of our activities were well paced and very doable. We love Active Adventures! This was our second trip to South America with Active and we look forward to booking another trip with them soon.”

  • Like an Inca in Peru

“ This trip was better than I could've ever expected. The Inca Trail was the most incredible hardest thing I've ever done both mentally and physically and I could not have done it without our guide Zac and my new found friend Cynthia. Machu Picchu was the perfect culmination to the pilgrimage. The rest of the trip and all of my other wonderful new friends including our guide Erick will never be forgotten. I will be talking about this trip for years to come and cannot wait to go on my next Active Adventure! ”
Jennifer Kenna – New York, United States November 2016
  • Fantastically organized

“The planning, organization and minute by minute support provided by Active Adventures was top notch. Erick was always there for us and the additional guides that we had along the way for cycling, kayaking and jungle tours were excellent. We really enjoyed the surprises that Erick provided to top off our days! Except for Lima, there were not a lot of English speaking locals in Peru, so I found it imperative to have such good local guides. We were also impressed with the food and equipment provided for cycling, kayaking and the support on the Inca trail. Active Adventures is a great company to work with!”
Doug Martin – Ontario, Canada November 2016
  • Best trip ever!

“We had a fantastic time and I must give top marks to Active Adventures. The whole trip was orchestrated wonderfully from start to finish. We could see that all contingencies were anticipated well before the trip commenced and it ran very smoothly. I talked with a person who did not use this company and the difference was like night and day. ”
Stuart Bowser – Ontario, Canada November 2016

“First of all, I want to say what a FANTASTIC "Jaguar" trip we had with Active Adventures in Peru. After talking with many other travellers we meet in Peru, Active Adventures were head and shoulders above other tour groups. They meet and exceeded my expectations. Thanks to the best guides "Eric" and our 4 day Inca hike Guide "Puma". They started as our guides and we finished as friends. ”

  • My Excellent Active Adventure!

“Such a fabulous trip. The challenge of hiking at altitude, biking and kayaking through some amazing scenery, and experiencing the culture and the diversity of Peru is something I will always remember. I was so impressed with everyone involved - our guide (Erick), our trail specialist (Puma), our activity specialists for the Amazon, biking and kayaking, our porters on the trail, and the support they received in dealing with any and all issues that arose during the two weeks. ”
Donna Gammon – Ontario, Canada October 2016
  • Awesome Active Adventure

“We had been told how well organized the trip would be but we were blown away by the organized, efficient and professional manner in which all of the staff conducted themselves and their duties. Not having to worry about tents and campsites and food allowed us to thoroughly enjoy the scenery and the people we encountered. Our guides Eric and Jose were excellent historians as well as trailblazers and were especially good at adjusting our trek through the Andes since we had some health and fitness issues to deal with (including Debby having an intestinal problem on the very first day of our journey).”

  • Jaguar trip 9-16

“I was interested in this trip because I had always dreamed of going to Machu Picchu and the only reason I was traveling to Peru was because that is where Machu Picchu was. As it turned out, getting to Machu Picchu was great but it wasn't even one of the highlights of the trip! I am so glad I went on this trip with Active Adventures because it exposed us to much more of Peru than we would have seen had we just trekked to Machu Picchu. Erick our guide was like our "peruvian google" who could answer just about any question we had about his country. As with the Condor trip I took to Patagonia last year, I always felt taken care of and could relax because all the little details were worked out by Erick and his Active Adventures Crew. Couldn't have had a better time in Peru than our Jaguar trip!”
Randy Yee – Hawaii, United States October 2016
  • Colorful Peru!

“Peru is a marvelous canvas of color, music and history; beautiful people, delicious food and breathtaking scenery. This adventure to Peru was amazing! It was a dynamic journey full of beauty and fun. From an unforgettable hike at the Lares Inca Trail to submerging into the life of the local families at Amantani Island! Everything during the trip was executed in an organized and safe manner. Thank you to our fantastic group leader, Erick, and to all my lovely travel Amigos for making this adventure a colorful one! This is how you celebrate Life!
    Abinette from Puerto Rico
Abinette Soto – South Carolina, United States October 2016
  • “The adventure begins to become just a wonderful memory. Over all the trip was amazing and the organisation with its (almost) all inclusive arrangements was impressive. There were so many high spots, it is hard to give a single highlight. The stay on Amantani island was very special, the views in the Andes were spectacular, the hotels were comfortable and the food everywhere was plentiful and delicious.
One of the best things about this trip was meeting such a lovely group of fellow travellers. We had such fun together. Erick our guide was very efficient and hard working. He must have found it challenging to shepherd such a lively group around but he managed to make it great fun as well as keeping us safe and free of worry.
All in all I am so happy that I took this trip and will recommend Active Adventures to anyone considering such an adventure.”

“The world is a diverse place. Peru is a must-see. The Jaguar trip by Active South America gives you a very good sampling of what this country is about from the cities and towns to the mountain to the jungle to the lake environments and the peoples and wildlife which make them home. This is quite the challenging trip for those of us who are relative lowlanders. This was our third trip with Active and they never disappoint. The guides are always first rate as they do everything possible to help you maximize your enjoyment of the trip no matter the circumstances. We love adventure and surely there will be more trips in our future. Out of the many many choices today Active will always be given first consideration.”

  • The best of Peru

“Our trip with Cynthia and Zac was super well organized and so informative. We were well informed about what to expect for every meal, hike, bike ride, flight and boat trip. This was enhanced by what was the best crew team in Peru. Every person connected with our Active Adventure was so welcoming. We learned so much about the history of the Inca's, the wildlife and foliage, customs of areas and current issues. Amazing meals on the Inca trail and adventures on picnics and in restaurants. It was truly a perfect and unforgettable active adventure!”

  • Macchu Picchu JULY24 2016

She made ALL the difference!”
Bill Naumann – California, United States August 2016
  • Amazing experience

“Everything was perfect!!! Cynthia, our group leader, is amazing!!! Every detail is attended to and we were very well taken care of. I was very pleasantly surprised how good the food was while hiking the Inca trail! That cook is able to make a better meal on a hiking trail than most people can make in a fully stocked kitchen!!! ”
Cheryl Chamberlain – California, United States August 2016
  • Wonderful Trip

“Terrific Trip!! Beautiful Country! Terrific Organization! Wonderful Guides! Great Food! I was very impressed with Cynthia and Puma and all the others that contributed to making this kind of trip possible. It is a sign of a well run organization when it values and hires such terrific people. They took very good care of us, were extremely well educated, and were very easy to get along with not to mention patient and fun. The Inca Trail views were absolutely breath taking but this really was a very well rounded trip. I enjoyed the cities of Cuzco and Puno, the trip to Porto Maldonado and the jungle with the extremely interesting hotel, and Lake Titicaca with our trips to a couple of the islands and stay with one of the families. Our tour of Lima was a great way to finish off our trip. One more thing-the food was absolutely the best. I have never eaten that well.”
Edward Olson – Minnesota, United States August 2016

  • Amazing time!

“We had an amazing time on our Active Adventures Jaguar trip to Peru. The Active Adventures team were incredible, taking care of everything so well. Our guide for the whole two weeks, Cynthia, was so friendly and went over and above multiple times to make sure that everyone had a great time. The Inca Trail was tough, and the weather didn't entirely cooperate, but when we finally got to Macchupicchu it was so worth it. Just seeing that stunning place made the journey worthwhile, but then the rainforest and Lake Titicaca were waiting for us! I'd highly recommend this trip and this company, and they certainly live up to their name!”
Adam Salter – California, United States July 2016

  • Jaguar trip Peru June 2016

“This is a trip I had wanted to do for a couple of years now and I finally did it and it certainly didn't disappoint, this truly was a trip of a lifetime for me. Peru is an amazing country, the culture, the people, the colour, all of it was stunning. It was certainly challenging, even more so because of the high altitude, but that is what I want out of my travel experiences. Our guide Cynthia was the best guide we could have asked for, her wealth of knowledge on her country was so vast and interesting and she always made us feel like one big family. Thank you Cynthia and thank you Active Adventures for giving me the best memories. ”
Christine Rowley – New South Wales, Australia June 2016
  • Unbelievable Peruvian adventure

“Nine months of preparation still didn't prepare us for the unbelievable non-stop action Active Adventures had in store for us. They really do put "active" at the top of the list. For two weeks our guides immersed us and saturated us with Peru. As we reflect on our trip it is hard to believe we did and saw so much.
Active Adventures were impeccable in their their arrangements and execution. The logistical details for the trip were considerable and our group was constantly amazed at the seamless delivery of everything.
We were kept fully informed and attended to as we took airplanes, trains, private coaches, tut tuks, bikes, kayaks, motor boats and, hiked and toured through Peru.
All we had to do was enjoy ourselves and our companions.
Our guides and other support help always made us feel safe, secure and well attended to. To a person they were exceptional.”
Tony Boettger – Ontario, Canada June 2016
  • “Cynthia was excellent going above and beyond in all areas. She was constantly upping herself daily. She was great and I would welcome going on a trip with her”

  • Peru - an amazing South American country :)

“Peru is a beautiful country full of culture contrasts, food, history and breathtaking landscapes. The trip we had was unforgettable. The guide was excellent - always willing to share the extensive knowledge about his country. He always made sure we had everything in check and supported us every step of the way. The group we were with was also a really great bunch making the trip even more memorable, thus making it easier to make new friends through this venture. We were exposed to all possible experiences during our 2 week trip. I will surely recommend Active Adventures to others. ”

  • One for the books!

“To be honest, I wasn't sure what I was getting into when my sister and I signed up for this trip - but it definitely turned out the be one of the best trips I had so far.
I really did have a great time. The organisation of the whole 2 weeks was very well managed, with excellent guides who knew the local culture and the best options to accommodate preferences of each individual. The locations visited and the accommodation were perfect. The food provided was of the best quality and amount! We were never left hungry nor thirsty.
The activities were well spread to have breaks in between and the level of difficulty was adjusted to each individual. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is into culture and some physical exercise.
I simply had a fantastic time with the whole group and guide :)

  • Peru

“Peru is a fascinating country and our trip covered four very different regions and we were able to really experience the land and people. It was an intense trip. I am very glad we made the trip. Thanks”
Debbie Ybarra – California, United States May 2016
  • Absolutely amazing!!!

“This was the trip of a lifetime. It was easily the most physically challenging thing I have ever done, but so worth it. Our guide Cynthia could not have been any better. Her knowledge, organization, and care made her the perfect leader. Our Inca Trail guide Chemma (sp?) was wonderful as well. The only part of the entire program that I would have changed was the long bus ride to Puno, but it was a necessary evil to get us where we needed to go. I cannot offer enough praise for the entire experience! Thank you Active Adventures and Cynthia, I will never forget the experience or the people I shared it with!”
Sandra Conner – Washington, United States May 2016
  • Jaguar May 2016

“Cynthia was fantastic! Great group of people. Truly the hardest thing I have ever done and most memorable. Local guides knowledgable and supportive. Chama got me through on the Inka Trail when I was struggling.”
Noel Carroll – Washington, United States May 2016
  • It Was an Active Adventure!

“The activities, the people, the food were all outstanding. Each of our guides was knowledgeable and friendly. They were sincere in their desire to show us their country and share the culture. Although we went during the wet season we had beautiful weather and the only rain we encountered was during one of our bike rides. Erick, our main guide was extremely helpful whether it was recommending a place to do laundry, a place to eat or an emergency visit to the dentist. My husband and I are both 60 and we participated AND completed all the activities planned so don't be intimidated by itinerary. No pressure to do everything either if you would rather ride in the van or skip a day hike. We will be back!”
Mary Ricciardello – Texas, United States March 2016
  • Fantastic Jaguar trip!

“I took my nephew on the Jaguar trip in January, and we had a great time. The guide, Erick, was extremely prepared, organized, and easy to get along with. I could not imagine a better experience. It exceeded our expectations!”
Curtis Kline – Oklahoma, United States March 2016
  • Zacarias was amazeballs

“To the say the least, Zacarias was the best guide I could have ever hoped for. 11 out of 10, would go again!!! ”
Paul Hough – Idaho, United States January 2016
  • Fantastic trip!

“This was a great trip in many ways. The details of the trip were well planned and well executed. Our guide, Erick, did a great job of staying on top of everything. All of the transfers and accomodations were excellent- on time, always ready, never a worry.
Erick also did a great job of introducing us to Peruvian culture- food, customs, traditions, ancient and modern history were incorporated into our daily routines. This was one of the most interesting and educational trips I've ever taken.”
Douglas Sandvig – Texas, United States January 2016
  • A Perfect Trip That I Will Never Forget

“I wish I was better with words so I could write a beautiful review, but I will do this anyway because I really want people to know how spectacular this trip was. Erick was amazing beyond all expectations as a guide (and on this trip covering numerous locales, that is saying a lot). I can't say enough positive things about Peru as a country! From Machu Picchu to the people in the villages on the Lares trail to the porters on the hike (who I am forever indebted to) to the animals in the Amazon.... The two week itinerary would be complicated if handled on your own, but the Active Adventures team and Erick made the details a non issue. I would recommend this trip for sure!!”
Jennifer Steel – Colorado, United States January 2016
  • When can I move??

“You know a trip has been successful when you'd rather lose your passport than get on the plane home. The hike on the Lares Trail was some of the most spectacular scenery I have seen in my life. We camped out in the school yard of a local Quechua village and stopped along the path to pass out school supplies to kids. It felt like an actual introduction to Peruvian culture instead of typical tourism. The trek into the Amazon was a lot more removed from reality, but the rest of the trip was so amazing, that was almost irrelevant. Probably the most important aspect of the experience was our guide, Zacarias. He was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable and great at explaining, but he was also incredibly personable, fun, and wonderful to be around. We were also very fortunate to have two professional cameramen with us, Alex and Leo, that really helped pull the group together and make it an incredible experience. The only problem I see with this trip was liking it so much I want to move there...”
Gretchen Hough – Wyoming, United States January 2016
  • BJ Peru

“Exceeded expectations. Educational but painless...you didn't feel like you were pumped full of information. Guide was exceptional. Knowledgable, personable (had friends EVERYWHERE) and managed to tailor activities to interest/fitness level. I would change nothing!”
BJ Barger – Virginia, United States December 2015
  • Machu Picchu - Lares

“What an unbelievable life-changing trip. AA thought of every detail and was highly organized and great. Erick was an awesome trip leader and really looked out for our safety and well-being at all times. Highly recommend Active for your next adventure trip!”
Shruti Verma – Massachusetts, United States December 2015
  • “Erick Farfan was great dealing with the demonstrations, road barriers and schedule changes needed.”
Michael Brown – New York, United States November 2015
  • An epic adventure that we are still talking about!

“There is a huge amount to say about our trip but to summarise:
Active are a brilliant company to travel with. Their itinerary, logistics, people and service are incredible.
Peru is such a beautiful and diverse place to visit and the Jaguar trip gave us a great taste of it from the high plateau and mountains to the dense jungles and stunning villages. It is a well crafted mix of activities, sights, food and experiences. The shorter excursions to markets and villages added so much and the chance to hike, kayak and mountain bike in carefully selected areas was awesome.
The people were great. Our group were great fun to be with and our guide Erick was brilliant - really thoughtful, knowledgeable, relaxed and an organisational machine. He really is exceptional. We miss him and everyone on the trip!

Andrew Polley – Bristol, United Kingdom November 2015
  • The importance of the trip leader

    “Two things made the trip:
The leader (Erick Farfan) was excellent. In spite of demonstrations and a cancelled flight (after we had boarded the plane even) he came through with alternatives and worked to keep people positive.
We had a small group (7) who all got along. ”
Peter Jones – Alberta, Canada November 2015
  • Don't just visit Peru, experience it!

“ Climb the rocky trails. Camp by a mountain lake. Touch the Inca ruins. Zoom into the Sacred Valley on a bike. Savor a home cooked Peruvian meal. Taste a guinea pig. Listen to the Amazon rain forest at night. Watch the soaring Caracara birds. Paddle across crystal clear Lake Titicaca and feel the cool water run down your arm. Know the difference between a llama and an alpaca. Dance to the panpipe flute music. Smell the fresh cut reeds of a floating island. Learn about the culture, the history, and maybe a bit of Quechua language along the way.
All this and more will be part of your Active Adventure Peru trip. You may encounter a few travel challenges, this is South America after all, not Disneyland. But be assured you will be in the capable hands of Active Adventures, and your intrepid guide will always have 'Plan B' up his/her sleeve.
Truly a unique travel experience for those who want to go a bit beyond traditional sightseeing. You will return home with many many tales to tell and a smile on your face.”
Janis Zinn – California, United States October 2015
  • “Our guide Frank was exceptional and made sure that we experienced everything- the people, the culture, the history, the food and of course the beautiful scenery!”
Annabelle Irey – New York, United States October 2015
  • “I have taken many tour led trips with several different companies. and Active Adventures was by far the best. The guides were exceptional and "ACTIVE" was the name of the game. Whether we were hiking, biking, or kayaking, the guides were spot on to make sure personal needs were met with genuine smiles and caring. The attention to detail was very impressive and the ease of moving from one location and mode of transportation to another was flawless. I was very spoiled on this trip and Look forward to taking another trip with Active Adventures. I really liked traveling with only eleven people, small groups make a big difference. Our guide, Cynthia, is a jewel. Thank you Active Adventures!!”
Patrice Petersen – Colorado, United States October 2015
  • Incredible Experience

“The trip exceeded all my expectations The itinerary was fantastic and our guide Frank was one of the very best I have ever encountered in over 20 trips. His insight into Peruvian life, history was incredible. The feeling of Peruvian family that he instilled in our group is something I will remember for a long time. The encounters with Peruvian children and adults on our Lares trek will always be remembered fondly. Most of all, Frank's quiet encouragement, concern and help with climbing the highest pass on the Lares trek helped me make it. I tested my limits to the maximum but Frank was always there for me and others to make sure we did not exceed those limits.”
Jim Locke – New York, United States October 2015
  • OK, but needs to be improved in a few areas

“We had a general feeling that with our small group size (4) on the Inca trail, we had the lesser pick of porters, campsite locations, sanitary conditions, etc. Our local guide even mentioned to us that we were short on porters, and they were reluctant to provide adequate, SAFE drinking water and restroom facilities. Other larger groups had portable toilet facilities, instead of having to use the limited, NASTY toilets at the campsites. We felt like second class citizens during the entire Inca trail, when comparing ourselves to the larger groups who appeared to have much nicer amenities. All 4 of us were sick on the Inca trail, and we are convinced the unsanitary conditions and improperly managed drinking water was the cause. This was entirely unacceptable for any reputable tour guide company.

  • Best 65th Birthday Present to Myself Ever! What an adventure!

“As a solo traveler, I had some concerns about going on this trip, since I was "Number 11". However, the group meshed together well, thanks in large part to our leader Cynthia's ability to facilitate group dynamics, and the structure of the trip itself. Active Adventures provides such diversity of experiences, that there is always something to be enjoyed, and everyone is always included. I loved Peru, the people, the food the many festivals we saw, and all the guides who introduced us to their amazing culture. The Lares Trail was truly luxury camping with wonderful, tasty meals and a warm cozy place to sleep at night. We were given hot water bottles for our sleeping bags! Even the "Porta potty" was luxurious and private! I have no idea how those porters could pull off such efficiency. They even baked me a cake and decorated our dining tent! If you are a solo traveler, don't hesitate to take this trip, it was a blast! I am also grateful for the "emergency horse" I was provided when the hiking at high altitude was a bit too grueling for me, and my struggle turned into fun! That sweet tempered horse, along with his porter, Santiago, made it possible for me to complete the trail! Thank you, Active Adventures, for the best birthday present, Ever!”
Trish Peterson – Florida, United States October 2015
  • The Peruvian indigenous people

“Where to start? An unexpected rich exposure to the world of the indigenous Peruvian people: past and present. Jaguar is much more than a multi sport adventure into the Andes and the Amazon jungle. The Andes and Amazonia provide the context to better understand the history of the people who lived in this area and to appreciate the people who live there now. ”
John Petrich – Washington, United States October 2015
  • Ancient Peru at our fingertips

“While a summary of the trip was provided before we embarked, in no way we're we prepared for the intensity of the experience of embracing locals cultures, and there are many separate groups. Our guide Frank, is descended from proud Incas and allowed us entry into the mysterious past of these clever people. The discoveries did not stop with Incas as we traveled south to meet, and stay with, other groups who live in their ancient ways. We came away with a lot of respect for the "Peruvian" peoples.”
Carole Petrich – Washington, United States October 2015
  • Adventure with Inca history

“This is my second visit in Peru, I was so happy to be back and see Machu Picchu in all the Inca glory and to be able to walk to the Sun Gate (my previous visit to Machu Picchu it rained and it was foggy, I only had a glimpse of 15 minutes). The other highlight that I loved on this trip was our trek on the Lares Valley and the encounter with the local people and children, beautiful landscape and the achievement of reaching the pass when I thought I couldn't take another step. .....At the top it was so beautiful and breathtaking. The bike rides gave us the possibility to enjoy the surroundings at our leisure. Walking up to the terraces of Pisaq and rediscover Ollantaytambo in the sacred valley i was able to see and enjoy the Inca history. Everything was so well organised and the food provided was yummy. ”
Gilda Acerbis – New South Wales, Australia October 2015
  • A good cross section on Peru

  • Amazing Awesome Active Adventures!!

“Well done Active. You supplied all you promised..even managing to provide a delightful group to share our adventure with. For an organised trip we feel we have a good understanding of real Peruvians and their lifestyle. We were spared none of life's realities for ordinary people there while feeling we contributed a little to improving their lives..we hope by adding to their tourist dollar. Our guides were first class and shared themselves and their lives, passions and hard bits with us. The physical challenges were just right and well monitored and managed. Thankyou

  • Money well spent.

“This is hands down the most tiring and most exhilarating trip I have ever been on. The itinerary was very well organized with plenty to do. We also were blessed with awesome people in our group, and outstanding leadership from our guides. Elder and Danny were a wealth of knowledge and insight into the culture of the Quechua people and the history of Peru. I would not trade this trip for anything in the world. Other tour companies exist, but there is only ONE Active Adventures. Thanks for the great memories. ”
Daniel Sibold – Ohio, United States September 2015
  • Jaguar 7/26/15 Team Haqu

“It was hard to know what to expect when we booked the tour, but it was truly way beyond our expectations. Elder our guide was so much fun and extremely dedicated to his job, it was obvious that he loves his job. Attention to detail was great, food was great and plentiful. A trip that was hard to fault.”

  • Still buzzing!

“Our Jaguar trip really did deliver the trip of a lifetime and we arrived home ready to book our next holiday with Active. The itinerary was well thought out in every detail, with great little surprises dropped in along the way just adding icing to the cake. Elder is an exceptional guide who over delivers in every facet of his job. Frank, our Inca Trail guide also did a great job.”
Pete Fowke – Otorohanga, New Zealand August 2015
  • Definitely Active, Definitely Awesome!

“This trip was a fantastic way to truly experience Peru in a variety of authentic ways, while staying active and also eating some of the best food of my life! It was awesome not to have to worry about any of the details, and the part of the trip I was able to attend (I could only do the seven day trip) was fantastic. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and fun, and went to great lengths to make sure everyone in our group was having a great time. I would absolutely recommend this trip for anyone that wants to really experience Peru, and go deeper into the culture than most tourists go. ”

  • Simply Awesome Active Adventures Lares Trail Trip

“The 14-day Jaguar trip in Peru is definitely my best vacation experience. Active Adventures has done an awesome job in its meticulous planning of a good spread of activities and our trip leader, Elder Bejar executed the plan flawlessly. The selection of activities was excellent and we were treated to numerous pleasant surprises along the way. Choice of menu during the Lares trail and selection of restaurants was excellent. Elder Bejar was outstanding!!! Such passion in the way he shared his knowledge and experiences was simply a joy to listen to his anecdotes and not forgetting the numerous occasions that he went out of the way to ensure that the group's needs were taken care off and in encouraging me to complete the biking trips. Thank you Elder and thank you Active for a truly great and awesome experience. Active will certainly be my first choice of vacation hereafter!!”
    Jaya Marimuthu – , Singapore August 2015
  • "Excellent, the trip of a lifetime!" doesn't even cover it.

“This really was a trip of a lifetime and more! I've been dreaming of visiting Peru for over 13 years, and being able to save up enough money to finally make my dream come true was a lot of work. With that being said, I must say that every year of dreaming, every hour worked, and every penny spent was worth it!

We've always traveled independently, and were a bit nervous about booking and traveling on a group excursion. Even though Active came highly rated by a friend who had traveled with your group about 10 years ago, we were still nervous about what it would actually be like to be with the same people for two weeks, rather than on our own. I was so happy to find that all our fears were unfounded. The people we were paired with for travel were easy to get along with and our leader was excellent (more about him later).

Peru is an amazing country with so much to offer. Traveling independently would have been fine, but I have a hard time believing that we would have been immersed in the country's culture, history, and scenic beauty as thoroughly if we had not gone with Active. We loved everything we did on the trip, but what stood out the most as highlights were our days hiking the Lares trail and all the amazing food that we got to try (oh, and pisco sours too).

The most important reason we were able to learn as much about Peru as we did was because of our amazing leader, Elder. I believe Elder went above and beyond what would be expected of a group leader. He was so enthusiastic about showing us his love for and knowledge of Peru. I have no idea where all his energy comes from, but it was refreshing to experience and made for a memorable time. Not only did he always have the answers to our questions, he anticipated what we'd want to know by pointing out what to see, explaining more details about nature, history, culture, telling us what was best to order at each restaurant, or what it was like to grow up in Peru. Everything we did was well-timed and organized, and our movement from one activity to another or from place to place was seamless.

I would never hesitate to recommend this particular trip or your company. It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I share details of our adventure with my friends and coworkers. Thank you, Active and Elder for making this a true dream come true!”
Jen Risser – Pennsylvania, United States July 2015
  • An absolutely amazing trip!

“What a great way to see Peru and experience the rich culture Peruvians offer to visitors. Every detail of our 2 weeks was well organized. The Active Adventures team supported travelers prior to and during the trip. They have partnered with local companies and guides to provide additional support for each aspect of the trip. We had fantastic guides on our Inca Trail hike; our bike rides; in the Amazon and at Lake Titicaca. Our trip leader, Erick, was PHENOMENAL and helped to make this trip so memorable for us. Each day he shared his knowledge and sense of humor with us and was attentive to the needs of each traveler in our group. We packed a lot into each day – getting to see many beautiful sunrises and sunsets along the way. This was our first vacation with a tour company and Active Adventures has set the bar for us!”
Brenda Stevenson – Maine, United States July 2015
  • What a great experience

  • My most amazing adventure

“Just returned from my Jaguar trip in Peru. So well organized, from first email to last, itinerary was accurate with some surprises too, equipment list given to us included everything we needed for the two weeks, the food was amazing as were all the restaurants we were taken to. The hike on the Inka Trail was the hardest thing I have ever done but with the help of the wonderful Guide, Porters and Cook we were able to accomplish our goal. The one thing I will always be thankful for other than meeting 8 other wonderful trip mates, is that I got to meet our guide, Elder. He is the most passionate, honest, respectful person I have ever met.”
Linda Dickens – Florida, United States July 2015
  • “Well organized, guides were excellent. Erick made this holiday for sure.
Will look for more Active Adventures”

  • Great trip

“Great trip. Got to celebrate my moms 68th Birthday while hiking through the Sacred Valley. What a way to ring it in!!! Active made our whole trip a breeze. Our guide was beyond knowledgeable and a great friend to everyone in the group by the end of our trip. ”

  • Definitely the trip of a lifetime

“This trip was incredible. Erick was an amazing trip leader - he was extremely passionate and knowledgable about the history and the activities. He was fun to be around and made sure that all the members of our group were well taken care of. Peru is unbelievably beautiful and diverse and we were able to see so much more that I could have on two weeks of my own. Everything was so well organized, planned and executed.”

  • Amazing travel in Peru

“Amazing trip! Couldn't have asked for a better guide, Erick truly made the trip. There is quite a bit of hiking the first week so make sure you prepare. Also most of the trip will be at high altitudes so altitude sickness medicine is essential. This was my second trip with Active Adventures and they continue to impress me. I will definitely plan other trips with them.”
Crystal Schaefer – APO/FPO AP, United States June 2015
  • 5 Gold Stars for Active Adventures & Elder!

“The answer to all the questions I get about my time in Peru: it was a cultural immersion, which is precisely what I wanted. All I knew about the country was Machu Picchu, the Peruvian textiles, and Lake Titicaca. Being a 'foodie' I was bowled over by the wonderful food I experienced - especially what our porters created after they set up our camp sites. Our leader, Elder, combined in depth knowledge with careful attention to each person (and we were a challenging group! 2 drop outs due to a biking accident, 3 drop outs due to altitude sickness & I ended up on my magnificent mount - a mule, due to altitude sickness) and a wonderful sense of humor. The man is made of pure energy. We couldn't stop marveling at his ability to be up beat at all times, no matter what the fates threw at him. I am so happy I took the Lares Trail instead of the Classic Trail - hiking through the mountains with no one but ourselves and the local people, mixed with alpacas & sheep. ”
Mary Kellough – Florida, United States June 2015
  • Jaguar, May, 2015

“We had an amazing time with Active Adventures during our two weeks in Peru. Every part of the trip was well planned and carried out. • Jaguar trip

“This trip was amazing! Every day we were so impressed by the incredible amount of intricate coordination and care taken to ensure that we needed to worry about nothing but enjoying an incredible country with incredible people. There are not enough words to express how professional, caring, helpful, intelligent, and just plain wonderful our guide Erik was. Everyone in contact with us through Active Adventures was truly amazing. I have highly recommended Active adventures already and will book another tour with them. Thank you for a GREAT experience!”
Jacqueline Futia – Connecticut, United States June 2015
  • Nonstop Adventures

“At first, being with Active in Peru seemed all about the fun -- trekking, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking in the jungle mud; looking out at jaw-dropping Andes vistas; waking up to exotic jungle noises. The trip definitely was an immersion into the perfect sampling of what the country has to offer. Thinking back, though, what enriched my life most is the deep pride Peruvians -- including our guide, Erick and all the Active crew -- have in their culture, their country and their history. They never stopped sharing their extensive knowledge and their pride was compelling. My favorite moment: silently observing our muleteer ask the gods of the earth and the mountains to bless his food and listening as our guide respectfully and quietly explained privately to me the rich history and meaning of that moment.

Yes: fabulous fun; great nonstop adventures in Peru's mountains, lakes and jungles; flawless logistics; endless caring and support for each of us. But bottom line? One of the richest cultural experiences I've ever had, and sharing it with my two grown children does make this the trip of a lifetime. Thank you!”
Myra Gossens – DC, United States June 2015
  • Amazing adventure!

“My Jaguar adventure was absolutely amazing and I highly recommend this trip! We explored Peru from a very human level- by personally interacting with local people from several different parts of the country, trying new foods at the best restaurants and shopping at local markets, and of course by engaging in all kinds of different activities from hiking to biking to kayaking. I can't say enough positive things about my guide Elder- he was supportive, fun, intuitive, caring, knowledgeable, and able to make decisions on the fly based on the needs of the group. Every moment of this trip was well thought out, well organized, and thoughtfully constructed. As a solo traveler, I always felt included and that I was a valued member of the group. I will definitely travel with Active on another trip!”
Dana Howell – Kentucky, United States June 2015

  • Talk about Active Adventure, I lost 12lbs in Peru, no joke!

“The best thing about our trip was our tour guide Eric. We've had many guides over the years, and Eric was by far the best tour guide ever! He's so patient, so kind, so caring, so real. He obviously loves his job and it shows through in everything he does. Eric is fun, energetic, professional, and makes the trip all it's meant to be and more. The whole trip is excellent, but Eric is the glue that brings it all together. ”
Kenneth Osherow – Massachusetts, United States June 2015
  • What a trip

“This trip was beautiful and certainly active.
14 days days allowed us to really emerge into the Peruvian culture. The memories will last forever.”
James Silva – Massachusetts, United States June 2015
  • Peru: Andes to Amazon adventure

“This trip was two weeks of solid fun. Despite being the home of tourist-draw Machu Picchu, Peru still feels fairly unspoiled.”
    Cheryl Allebrand – , Sweden May 2015
  • “A very good trip. Well organized and tons of stuff to do. Our guide was great and very knowledgeable. I never worried about a thing it was seamless. ”
Bev Belliveau – Ontario, Canada May 2015
  • Dad & Son get away

“It was a very good trip. Peru is an excellent choice for interesting sights and a variety of experiences. The people are warm, friendly and very humble. High praise to Zac who was very attentive, informative & knowledgeable. A great representative for Active Adventures. I really enjoyed the small group and the many varied activities.”
Michael Fitzhugh – California, United States May 2015
  • Active review jaguar trip

“From start to finish this Active trip was perfectly organized. Our guide ( Elder) was as good as it gets and had the personality to not just get along with everyone but befriend and give the impression he was enjoying the trip just as much as we were. His enthusiasm was contagious! The trip exceeded our high expectations! ”
Bob Ford – California, United States May 2015
  • Another Score for Active

“This is our second trip with Active. The first was the Tortugas trip to the Galapagos with Pepo. That set the bar and our expectations mighty high. This trip was certainly close. This trip was physically more strenuous and the scenery was more spectacular. Of course, it is impossible to beat the Galapagos wildlife though we did see some pretty cool stuff especially in the rainforest part of the trip. Pepo set the platinum standard for guides, but Elder (in Peru) was no slouch in terms of knowledge, personality and care for all of our fellow travelers. Now our only question is what is our next Active trip?”
Greg Gorbach – California, United States May 2015
  • The first of more Active Adventures! (April 2015)

“For me, travelling to Peru was going to be a trip of a lifetime since it would be "out of my comfort zone" (All of my travel, although extensive, had been in Europe, where I lived for 5 years, and North America). Active Adventures made this trip unforgettable mostly because of our expert and extraordinary guide, Elder (he is a gem!), and the perfectly organized, ambitious itinerary which showed us so many aspects of this amazing country that most tourists don't ever see. Every day unfolded practically seamlessly; our accomodation, whether hotels, jungle huts or tents, was comfortable and easy; our food, whether in restaurants or cooked by our talented porters, was varied and delicious; and the knowledgeable and passionate local guides offered rare glimpses into the unique experiences of their lives as Peruvians. The activities were so well orchestrated, with excellent equipment (bikes and kayaks) and gave us unique perspectives of landscapes that few visitors are privileged to experience. Many of the places on the Jaguar trip offered spontaneous encounters with local people which added so much to the trip. For me this was a journey which one can hardly place a value on. Thank you Active! I'll be back!”
Diana Larsen – Massachusetts, United States May 2015
  • The Ups and Downs of Peru

“Peru is about lots of going "up" and lots of going "down" and that rhythm was the fun "comment" of our group. The excitement was achieving the "up" experiencing the incredible environment on the journey and the joy of reaching the end of the "down." Above all, the variety of the Jaguar trip was invigorating and exciting. It was not always easy... but it was always a great day. ”
Bob Connors – Massachusetts, United States May 2015
  • We Don't Watch The Movie, We Make The Movie!

“The title of this review is my favorite quote from our guide, Elder, and it certainly explains everything. We did not visit Peru, we experienced Peru, from the mountains to the Amazon basin to the high plateaus. Within days we felt as if we were part of the country and not just tourists. I was amazed as to how detailed and planned the trip turned out to be. We all had choices as to how much we wanted to exert and experience and I personally went farther than I ever expected I was able to do. It was great to be challenged and then be able to meet the challenge. The professional, encouraging coordinators and guides became our window to a wonderful country. I have never been exposed to or succeeded in a more exciting, challenging adventure. We most definitely will be looking to book a new adventure soon. I can't wait to try another trip!”
Jeff Pratt – Michigan, United States May 2015
  • We Are ACTIVE!

“What a great trip. I honestly wouldn't change a thing. Our guides were all wonderful. The activity level was perfect. The accommodations were comfortable and the entire trip came together like clockwork. I am very impressed with Active Adventures and will definitely recommend to others.”
Layne Dodson – Idaho, United States May 2015
  • Fantastic Adventure

  • Peru Adventures

“Active Adventures did a great job putting together a momentous experience. Everything was incredibly well-organized and executed flawlessly. But our wonderful guide, Zac, was the secret ingredient to this perfect vacation. I highly recommend this trip!”

  • “We had a great time on our trip. The hiking was great as was the food and lodging. Our guide was excellent and so were the porters and chefs. We couldn't have asked for more!”
Tracey Taylor – Ontario, Canada April 2015
  • Trip leader Zacarius de Ugarte was the best!

“What I will remember is not the places, but the people we met, including our three guides. Most especially, our trip leader, Zacarius de Ugarte, was a true host for Peru, an ambassador for his native country. Places like Peru become real when they are represented by one who "feels" the place in himself. Zacarius's energy was infectious, and his knowledge of all things Peruvian way more than we could digest. Hit by altitude sickness, I might have gone home. His generosity carried me through, and is something I will always remember. He made the trip for me!”
Ron Chen – New Jersey, United States February 2015
  • Peruvian Perambulations

“I booked a couple of Active New Zealand tours a few years ago, and those were pretty nifty--but the Jaguar blows them out of the water. Hiking the Inca Trail really put the "active" in Active Adventures, and while the Amazon and Lake Titicaca side trips were less strenuous, both were culturally and environmentally rich and engrossing. All our guides were first rate: smart, knowledgeable and with a broad and deep command of English as a second language. This is a first-rate excursion, with high altitudes the only cautionary note.”
Andy Zipser – Virginia, United States February 2015
  • Jaguar 2014

“I loved my 4th trip with Active Adventures! Peru was magnificent, our adventures were fascinating and of course our guide was top notch!”
Brooke McDermott – Connecticut, United States December 2014
  • Another Excellent Active Trip.

“The Jaguar Trip, as with my other Active trips, was a trip of a lifetime. On the Jaguar trip, the highlights were the insights into Peruvian culture, the outstanding scenery and the action / activity packed itinerary. Our guide, Erick did a fabulous job; knowledgable, great organizer and wonderful sense of humour. ”
Alan Moore – Nova Scotia, Canada December 2014
  • Amazing Adventure in the Andes

“I had an amazing time on my trip to Peru with Active. Our guide, Erick, was fantastic. He was passionate about Peru and its history and you could tell that he really loved what he did and genuinely cared about each of us and ensuring that we were getting what we wanted out of the trip. My favorite part was the Lares Trek through the Andes, the scenery was breathtaking! ”
Marsha Sandler – California, United States December 2014
  • A great way to see Peru and Machu Picchu

“A very well designed, well supported trip that prepares you to hike up and over The Andes at high altitude and in good spirits. The visit to Machu Picchu was the centerpiece of the trip, but every day's activities were vigorous and enjoyable. Good companionship and excellent food served every meal. ”
Andrew Morse – California, United States December 2014

  • Two Wonderful Weeks in Peru!!

“It was truly a trip to remember! The landscapes of the Lares trail were incredible. I will always cherish this trip as it offered so many diverse opportunities to view Peru and its many natural landscapes and architecture. From the mountains of the Lares Inka Trail -to the jungle -to the waters of the beautiful Lake Titikaka... it was one incredible day after another. Thanks to our wonderful guide, Cynthia, we were well taken care of... Thank you, Active Adventures”
Elaine Wallace – Virginia, United States November 2014
  • Jaguar Trip with Erik

“Our trip was over the top. I have been on many trips over my lifetime, but this one was effortless from the organization up front to the care we were given during our trip. We could not have asked for a better guide. Erik was the most wonderul guide and person. His knowledge, organization and personal care for each of us was more than we could have asked for. We saw many other groups during our tour and we can definitely say we were given 5 star treatment the entire time compared to the others. We have left a little saddened as we miss Erik so much. I would recommend Erik as a guide for anyone visiting Peru -- he was outstanding. Thanks again for all. Miraculous is all I can say.”
Cheryl Hawes – California, United States November 2014
  • A Fantastic Time in Peru

“Once again, Active Adventures hits it out of the ballpark! This was my second trip with Active Adventures, and it sure won't be my last. Hiking to Machu Picchu is a bucket list adventure and you are in great hands with Active. Our guide, Cynthia, was absolutely outstanding along with all the numerous local guides that assisted along the way. Each had so much to offer in the way of enlightening us about local culture, flora and fauna, wildlife, ancient Inca civilization and the Peruvian way of life. This trip is so much more than just Machu Picchu, you feel like you have experienced the genuine and beautiful country and people of Peru. Thank you Active for another picture perfect and fun filled adventure of a lifetime! ”

  • Fantastic Peru Trip

“I'm so glad we decided to increase our trip to see and experience more of Peru than simply hiking the Inca Trail. Cynthia was a terrific guide with a great personality and highly organized to manage all the minutia with never the hint of a glitch. This was absolutely the best adventure I've ever had.”
David Greymont – Minnesota, United States October 2014
  • Peru Jaguar Tour with Cynthia

“I could not have been more pleased with this trip. Every detail was handled to perfection. Our guide, Cynthia, was fantastic. She addressed our questions/concerns in a thoughtful and professional manner. Her organizational skills were superb and she was a genuinely fun person. My birthday occurred during the trip and she arranged a celebration (with cake) on two occasions. It's difficult to say what the best part of the trip was: Inca Trail, Amazon jungle, Lake Titikaka. Staying with a local Quechua family on Amantani was very special. I am seriously interested in Patagonia as my next adventure.”
Vince Gotz – California, United States October 2014

“I always wanted to go to Machu Picchu since I was a small child but I never understood how unbelievable the whole country would be. Between the people, the food, your great guides, the history, the incredible genius of the inca city planning and building, everywhere ..... I am totally in awe of the country. The 4 day inca trail to Machu Picchu was incredibly hard but totally worth every step. Bring hiking poles!”

  • The Best

“The Jaguar trip was beyond my expectations. The scenery, the organization of the trip, the varied activities, and experience of the culture were fantastic. As good as Active Adventures (the company) is, the real test is when you interact with the guides. Our guides were the best. Cynthia, Frank, and Oswaldo all were outstanding. Great attitudes, flexible, knowledgeable, entertaining and a joy to be with. Thanks for the great trip.”

  • My first trip to Peru

“Peru is an extraordinary country/place/culture. It is so diverse and expansive. I left longing and continue to long to see more of Peru and understand more of Peru's history, it's people and their culture. My wife and I have been blessed by our travels over the years, but I believe Peru has been the most impressionable. I look forward to our return.”
Javier Lucio – Texas, United States August 2014
  • Fabulous trip - Active Adventure delivers once again!

“This trip was my fourth trip (3rd one to South America) with Active and it didn't disappoint. Our trip leader Erick (who lives in Cusco himself) was amazing, knowledgable, attentive & considerate and went out of his way to ensure everybody's safety and enjoyment at all times. We had a fabulous group (9 of us) with mixed backgrounds and abilities but we all had a wonderful time and managed to see the best and worst of Peru!”
Catriona Hellicar – New South Wales, Australia August 2014
  • Never a dull moment

“We ALL loved our Peru trip - including our 4 children aged 11- 17 years. We could never have seen or done so much without Active in such a relatively short time. Peru itself is so hugely diverse and being able to have a glimpse into some of the varying cultures was very special. ”

  • A Taste of Peru

“Absolutely the trip of a lifetime. Our incredible guide, Cynthia, was there for each person in the group, always, in sickness, health and fun. The two week Peruvian adventure was extremely well organized, from meals, lodging, bicycles, kayaks, boats, hiking, planes, taxis...everything flowed easily. Cynthia's comfort and clarity allowed us a sense of freedom and safety, while exploring new lands. I was able to completely surrender to her competence. This trip is what it says...Active Adventure. We were on the move, challenging ourselves, physically and emotionally. The glow of Peru shines brightly in my heart. Thank you!”

  • Trip of a lifetime, until the next Active Adventure

“Fabulous food, lodging, sights, sounds and travel companions.”
David Humphrey – Kentucky, United States July 2014
  • “Erick was a gracious knowledgeable guide. We loved the Inca trail. Erick named us the "Gonzales family" because we were a bit speedy on the trail. Food was great. Even tried Guinea Pig! Machu Picchu was a highlight. Peruvian jungle provided the opportunity to befriend an eccentric parrot who wanted to come running with me. Lake Titicaca home stay was fantastic. Even managed a couple of goals playing football with the locals - they still won 4-2 though.”
Matthew Brick – , New Zealand July 2014
  • What a country

“One attraction is better than the next. Machu Picchu is the big draw, but I felt the Amazon, Lake Titicaca, and the Lares Trek were equal, I can't pick a favorite. Very well organized trip, Active sweats the details-- down to snacks and water-- so you don't have to. ”
Doug Suna – Ohio, United States July 2014
  • Exceptional tour!

“I could not have asked for a better adventure! Trekking to Machu Picchu was the experience of a lifetime. Overall on the trip, the scenery was epic and the activities were all well-paced and enjoyable. Logistically, the food was excellent and the accommodations and transfers exceptional. Our guide, Cynthia, could answer any question, accommodate any request, and was generally just a lot of fun to travel with. Thank you Active South America! ”

  • Jaguar

“If only we had more time.... We opted for 7 of the 14 day Jaguar trip and would have loved to stay for all of it. Sadly, we only had 7 days to travel. WOW! What an amazing 7 days! This was my first hiking trip and Cynthia made every step of it. Peru is amazing! The people, food and breathtaking scenery are all incredible! Active Adventures gave us a first rate experience with enough free time to explore and wander on our own. Cynthia is an amazing guide and made us feel like family. She fostered a love of the land and people. Her passion for the mountains and her country was infectious. She also had a wicked good card game that our family is still playing!! Everything was "my favorite!" Can't wait to book again (with Cynthia) on an Adventure to Patagonia. Our first Active Adventure has created a new passion for hiking and a thirst to see more of South America. From start (gathering info thru New Zealand office) to finish (arriving home) every member of the AA team treated us with professionalism, urgency and friendliness. Give them all a raise! ;)”
Janet Valesares – Florida, United States July 2014
  • Jaguar Peru

“Peru is definitely a trip of a lifetime and Active South America knows all the hidden gems for you to explore from hikes to restaurant selection. Cynthia, our tour guide, absolutely thought of everything to make our trip itinerary seamless, from bottled water every night down to having bowls of water to wash our hands in before eating while hiking. I cannot say enough fabulous things about Cynthia, who no doubt played a huge role in making the trip as memorable as it was. She was the perfect balance of friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and organized. When my flight got delayed almost 24 hours, there was an Active employee waiting for me at the airport to get me caught back up with my group. When I wasn't feeling well, she had chicken soup made for my dinner. I will no doubt be looking to book another trip with Active Adventures in the very near future as the price of the trip truly was all-inclusive and I did not feel nickeled and dimed for anything. I can honestly say the trip was worth every penny. ”
Tammy Whalen – New Jersey, United States July 2014
  • Trip of a lifetime

The views were amazing, we did something physically active everyday, and it was great not having to worry about meals, lodging, or boredom. ”

  • Jaguar Dec-Jan

“As if the views were not spectacular enough, every location we went, we got to know our local guides who gave us incredible insight into the Peruvian culture and spirit. Local people were so proud of their homes, farms and families. They were eager to show us that pride, answer all of our questions, make us feel comfortable. I was very humbled by how hard these people work and how happy they are. A breath of fresh air!”

  • Hiking Inca Trail is Excellent Four Days

“Challenging but fun, educational, and inspiring. We saw MANY amazing Inca sites. Never imagined that those mountains could support such a huge and busy civilization. The genius involved in developing the systems is astounding. The scenery is truly magnificent. Loved learning about the native flora and fauna. The Amazon was fascinating as well, and we were super lucky to get glimpses of river otters. The drive up to the Altiplano was most interesting. My least favorite spot was the Uros Islands, which while interesting in construction, did not seem to remain an authentic culture, but mostly a tourist attraction. However our subsequent trip to Taquile and Amantani were delightful.”
Donna Cleverdon – Maryland, United States January 2014
  • Inca Trail Trek, Peru

“My family and I have traveled with Active before and really enjoyed it. When looking for your groups to go to South America we immediately decided on Active. The trip was amazing! Being a teenager, it was to share my experiences with my friends when we got back home! My family and I went on the Inca Trail trek. While hiking on the first day, I was amazed with the scenery! No picture can show the beauty of the mountains and valleys! It was amazing to turn the corner and see Inca ruins throughout the hike! On the second day, the views got even better! Also the feeling of accomplishment when I reached Dead Women's Pass at 14,000 feet was great! The third day was one of my favorites. Though it is the longest day of hiking, the Inca ruins were amazing! Also at lunch it was amazing to see the back of Machu Picchu mountain! It was really exciting to know we were that close! On the last day, we reached Machu Picchu! I was so happy to be there! By hiking there I felt like I earned my right to be there! I would not have had the same satisfaction that I had by hiking the 4 days to get there!!! I was amazed about the size of Machu Picchu! It is so much bigger than I imagined it! Again no picture can show the sheer size of it! Also the scenery around Machu Picchu was spectacular!!! I will remember this trip for the rest of my life, thank you Active for giving me an my family the opportunity to experience Peru and Machu Picchu! ”
Jenna Weidner – Minnesota, United States January 2014
  • Non-stop adventure

“What a truly excellent adventure. Peru is an amazing place and having great tour guides and a tour group makes in even more enjoyable. The places visited and activities balance out adventure with culture with environment. Great balance between being on the go and having a chance to relax and take in as much of Peru as you can. The tour guides make this trip, always in control and ensure that everyone is having fun. The group I was on were a great bunch of people from all over, each was there to have a good time and enjoy the trip. Definitely be recommending the trip and looking at Active Adventures for my next holiday adventure.”

  • “This is probably the best trip I have taken. Peru is amazing - the landscape and the people are unmatched. I'd travelled with Active before (to the Galapagos) and I enjoyed that trip. However, this trip truly has set the bar higher. Elder and Erik were amazing leaders. Consistently, they put forth effort to make sure everyone was happy and to meet individual needs.”
Christine Soskins – California, United States January 2014
  • Todd and Kelli's Excellent Adventure

“This was our honeymoon trip and it was perfect! The organization and details of each day were well thought out and executed and it was a treat just to get up and enjoy each day. This was our first trip with an agency/group and we were pleased with how much we enjoyed it. What stood out to us about Active Adventures was their social responsibility, including the environment, supporting local businesses, and charity. Active was recommended to us and we would definitely recommend an Active trip to others.”

  • Great Trip!

“I can't believe how much we got to see and do in just two weeks! It was so nice to travel as part of a small group - there was always somebody walking your speed on the hike or sharing your interests. It was also great to see so much without having to plan the little things that can become big things in a hurry: where to eat, where to stay, how to get from A to B. Definitely looking forward to the next trip!”

  • Enchanting Peru

“My Jaguar trip with Active Adventures was a truly unique experience and one that I will always remember fondly. The trip was active, but allowed for some rest days to reset between activities. The trek to Machu Picchu was incredible and we were fortunate to have little rain even though it was the beginning of the rainy season. I enjoyed the interactions with the local people and being immersed in the culture with the stay with the local family on Lake Titikaka. I highly recommend this adventure to anyone who wants to experience the beauty and culture of Peru. ”

  • An amazing adventure in Peru!

“My now wife Sarah and I decided a few years ago that we wanted to have a small, intimate destination wedding at Machu Picchu. We've been travel junkies for just under a decade and have been to a number of European countries as well as a few trips to other states here in the USA. Born and raised in central New York State, we're city folk that look forward to occasionally getting out into the world to appreciate the variety of amazing natural wonders, history, cultures, languages and people that share this enormous planet with us. In the past, we've always mapped out and navigated our own vacation adventures. This was our first ever guided trip... and Active Adventures set a new bar of expectation for how we'll look into our vacations going forward, in fact we were so impressed that our next vacation will almost certainly be one of the other guided adventures that Active offers. Peru is like no place in the world we've ever been before. The constant but ever-changing backdrop of the Andes coupled with the timeless landscaping and stonework of the Incas and pre-Incas immediately removes you from your day-to-day life and transports you to another time. There aren't adequate words to describe the sensation of wonder that the scenery evokes...it's something that has to be experienced in order to understand. Our guide Yohn was immediately likeable and was, in my opinion, a master of his trade. Not only did he provide us with facts about where we were, he also elaborated on a lot of the myths, legends and musings in order to give us a better sense of the mystery that abounds in the mountains the Incas and their predecessors once called home. But he was always careful to separate fact from fable so we could come away from our trip with both proven knowledge and a heightened sense of wonder about this world and its history. Furthermore, he talked about his own life and experiences growing up in Peru which even further rounded out our immersion. By the end of the trip, we had an experience of Peru that was deeper, more intimate, and more memorable that anything we could have arranged on our own. I could literally write a book-long review of how awesome this trip was and there wouldn't be a single sentence of negativity. Active handled the arrangements of our wedding, and we were provided a ceremony conducted by two Shamans (father and son) and catered to by wonderful staff on the mountainside of the Pisac Ruins (we were unable to book a ceremony at Machu Picchu due to recently enacted Peruvian regulations. But I'm glad it worked out the way it did! It was amazing!). Like I said, I could go on and on and on... There are so many things I haven't even mentioned like the unforgettable few days in the Amazon Rainforest, the 4-day hike up the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the plethora of ruins we encountered, the man-made floating islands on Lake Titicaca, and SO MUCH MORE. And the people of Peru were AWESOME. We never for a moment felt unsafe, in fact we felt welcome by everyone. I'll end by saying this... Our primary point of interest in deciding on this trip to Peru was, of course, Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is every bit as amazing as you can imagine and more, BUT... I say with full conviction that nearly every day we spent in Peru was filled with sights and wonders we didn't expect. In hindsight, Machu Picchu was just one small part of the overall experience, and there are a great many places on this trip that rivaled it in its ability to just leave you speechless in their presence. If you are considering this trip... Stop considering and start planning. It will enrich your life immensely. Also, be prepared to sweat... They're not called ACTIVE Adventures for nothing :-)”

  • Peru 2013

“The Jaguar trip was one of my favorite trips ever and my wife and I do a lot of traveling. My favorite portion of the trip was the Lares Trail hike where we were able to get away from the tourist areas and see people living in the mountains the way that they have lived for centuries. I may need to go back and do the classic Inca Trail for comparison. I feel as though we had a good overview of Peru and it's Inca heritage. Cynthia was the best guide I have had on a tour such as this and we gave her some challenges! ”

  • Awesome

“This trip exceeded our expectations! Michael and I were looking to get to married in Peru and the Active team put together a beautiful wedding ceremony for us that we will remember for a lifetime. I have waited to visit Peru for a long time and loved the itinerary for this tour. We had a lot of great experiences around the country and it was beautiful. Our tour guide Yohn was fantastic; it was like traveling with a friend who took care of all the details. On the Inca Trail we had a great guide in Frank and the best porters on the trail. I cannot wait to take another trip with Active Adventures! ”

  • Jaguar trip comments

“Trip was outstanding....active, wonderful and very varied locations...saw many beautiful sights and a rich variety of environments/nature/wildlife. Inca Trail hike was difficult (altitude) but well worth the effort. Excellent guide (Frank) and support team. Amazon headwater trip was exceptional. Wonderful location (Amazonia Ecolodge) and good jungle hikes. The anaconda we saw was an unexpected highlight.”

  • Climbing the Mountain

“When we booked this adventure, we were unsure of the difficulty between the two options to choose - classic Inca Trail or the Lares. Being in our 70's we have always held our own in all kinds of adventures. But this time the altitude got Gloria. She was all right with the muscle required, but could not keep up from labored breathing and often rest. Soon we could not meet the time schedule for each night's camp site. Alas! we must turn back. Indeed, we saw many people of all ages returning also. This short account is written to praise Active for the way in which they handled this disappointing turn of events. They turned a bad experience into a good one and arranged to get us on the Lares and ultimately to Machu Picchu. The trip was full of great adventure and we sincerely recommend Active for the trip.”
Jerry Funderburg – Texas, United States November 2013
  • Beautiful mountains

“This was a wonderful adventure along the Inca Trail and more. The only downside is that the route is well-traveled. This is more about seeing classic sites than a wilderness adventure.”
Peter Cramton – Maryland, United States November 2013
  • Peru Lares Trail October 2013

“Our family group of seven, aged 31 to 61, had a wonderful time with aggressive hikes for 5 days including a 9 hour hike to just short of 16,000 feet, nice bike ride, day unscheduled and 3 days in the jungle. Unscheduled day was white water rafting 2 hours outside of Cuzco which I recommend adding to all trips. Our primary guide, Cynthia, was terrific and very helpful keeping us all challenged, entertained, well fed and full of smiles.”
Larry Hennessy – Wisconsin, United States November 2013
  • Travels with friends, old and new

“We traveled with another couple that we met on an adventure in southeast Asia. This proved to be equally exciting and a good way to make new friends. A highlight was homemade Martinis in our tent after a long day of hiking.”
Paul Richards – Washington, United States November 2013
  • Trip of a lifetime is an understatement

“Even though the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in itself is an experience, I will never forget that without Active Adventures it wouldn't have been quite the same. We had the most knowledgeable guides and we were all treated like one big family. Cynthia was fantastic; it was if we had known her all our lives. Because of Cynthia I would consider doing another trip to South America with Active Adventures.”

  • Jaguar 2013

“This trip was phenomenal. The activities were great. The main guide was wonderful, easy to work with, and extremely helpful. The individual activity guides were also very friendly and knowledgeable. Every trip detail was very well thought out. For example, on our travel day from Cuzco to Puno, they brought bicycles along so we could bike some of the track instead of sitting in the van for six hours. The trip was perfectly balanced between activities and free/relaxation time. We also learned a lot about Peruvian culture and history, much more than we expected. All in all, an incredible trip.”
Sean Avery – Washington, United States October 2013
  • Great trip!

“Peru was an amazing country and seeing it on the Jaguar trip was great! Cynthia our guide, was awesome. She was informative, easy to get along with, and definitely had a passion for what she does. The activities we did were fun, all the food we ate was delicious, and I can't speak highly enough about the trip! We also happened to have a really fun, and easy going group, which added to the experience.”
Mike Anaya – California, United States October 2013
  • Unlike anything I've ever done!

“The Jaguar trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. I originally planned this trip around checking Machu Picchu off my bucket list but throughout the course of the trip, I did things I never knew I always wanted to. From hiking the Lares Trail to staying with a family on Amantani Island, I experienced more than I ever thought I would. This was unlike any vacation I have ever taken and something I will never forget. I can't wait to go on my next Active Adventure. ”
Brenna Robinson – California, United States October 2013
  • What a challenge!

“This trip was extremely challenging! I had never done anything like it before, and it really pushed me to the limit ... in a good way! Peru is incredibly beautiful and has so much to offer. What made out trip amazing was our incredible guide, Elder. The people we met were incredible. Definitely the trip of a lifetime!”

  • The Only Way to See the Andes

“Incredible experience. We had a great group of mixed ages and experiences to travel with. The ability to be active on a trip like this meant I went home feeling in better shape than when I started. Best kind of vacation!”

  • Peru!

“Peru is a beautiful country! My view of Peru expanded as a result of going on the tour. Before the trip Peru was Machu Picchu ... but now when I think about the country I remember impressive mountains and colourful culture and music and jungle and history and friendships! I had a fantastic trip!”
Andrea McIntee – Ontario, Canada September 2013
  • Amazing experience!

“The trip provided us with an intimate view of the breathtaking Peruvian landscape and warm people. We loved our hikes although the altitude was challenging at times. Cynthia was a fabulous guide who helped our group to bond in a very special way. Our favorite part was the Amazon where we hope to return.”
Hanina Ruttenberg – New Jersey, United States September 2013
  • Thank you!

  • Trip of a lifetime

“I've just returned from a Jaguar tour in Peru; it was a trip I will never forget!! The whole trip was well organised and worth every penny. I found myself with a fantastic mix of people and a brilliant tour guide. The activities took us away from the tourist trail and allowed you to experience the 'real' Peru from a completely different perspective ... whether that was from a bike, kayak or from a mountain pass at 4800m altitude!”
Kat Mills – Somerset, United Kingdom August 2013
  • Very impressed!

“Really enjoyed the trip and loved Cynthia! She's amazing and everything was very organized and well run. Already recommending it to friends!”
Ashley Devery – Colorado, United States August 2013
  • One heck of a trip this was!!

“Having been lucky enough to have had the chance to travel around the world a fair bit, I would rate my Jaguar trip with Active as probably the best trip ever. Even as I write this, I can't help but go down the memory lane and think of those two incredible weeks spent in Peru. Serenity, thrill, adrenalin rush, joy and sheer beauty - mix these with some lemon, salt, spice, chopped onions and salmon, and voila - you get a 'ceviche' of a trip! Loved it to bits and can't wait for another one with Active!”
Vishnu Sankaran – Dubai, United Arab Emirates August 2013
  • If you're physically able to make the trip, don't think twice!

“This trip was everything I could have asked for and more. I couldn't have asked for a better leader - Cynthia definitely made the trip what it was. She knew so much, was so helpful, and extremely fun and friendly. The Jaguar trip was incredibly well planned and excellently structured. It is clear that Active has done its research and knows what is best for its clients. I was certainly encouraged to take another trip with Active, and didn't want Jaguar to end - the people, the program, the experiences and the memories are all unforgettable!”
Angelica Conway – New York, United States August 2013
  • Another fine Active trip

“Wonderful trip with Active. Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was an experience of a lifetime. The Amazon was also great. My favorite part of the trip was Lake Titicaca. Our guide, Cynthia, was really good. The local guides used along the way were also great.”
Doug Bertossi – Minnesota, United States July 2013
  • Great time, unique honeymoon experience

“My husband and I had a wonderful time on the Jaguar trip to Peru. It made for a fun and unique honeymoon experience that we will remember forever. Elder, our guide, was fantastic, extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about sharing his home country with everyone. In addition to a memorable trip to Peru, we made lasting friendships with everyone on our excursion and hope to reunite on another Active Adventure some day!”
Kimberly Dresdner – Texas, United States June 2013
  • Amazing!

“What an amazing trip! Our Jaguar adventure was very well organized - we were well taken care of every step of the way. I'm recommending it to all my friends as something they simply must do.
