There’s a quiet kind of magic at the top of Lake Wakatipu

By the time you arrive at Kinloch Wilderness Retreat, you’ve already felt the noise of the world fall away.

Queenstown’s buzz slips behind you. The road curls along Lake Wakatipu, past mountain shoulders and brilliant blue water, toward Glenorchy and beyond. You pass Mrs Woolly’s General Store, a much-loved little stop in Glenorchy, then keep going. The road narrows. The beech forest gathers. The Dart River braids through the valley nearby.

And then there it is.

Kinloch Wilderness Retreat sits at the head of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains, native forest, and a kind of stillness that feels rare these days. It’s only about an hour from downtown Queenstown, but it feels much further in the best possible way. Kinloch calls itself “1 hour and a million miles from Queenstown,” and once you’re there, you understand why.

There’s history here too. Built in 1868 and carefully restored by owners Toni and John Glover over more than 25 years, Kinloch feels like a retreat that belongs to its landscape. You can sense that care in the heritage buildings, the warm communal spaces, and the way old character sits easily alongside the modern comforts you appreciate after a day in the wilderness.

This is one of the special stays on our new Ultimate Fiordland and Queenstown Adventure, a 9-day journey that brings together Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, the Kepler, Milford, and Routeburn Tracks, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Mt Aspiring National Park, and the Dart River by jet boat and Funyak.

But Kinloch isn’t just a place to sleep between adventures.

It’s part of the adventure.

A place most visitors never get to experience

Whales in Baja waters Mexico

Many travelers come to Queenstown. Fewer make it to Glenorchy. Even fewer continue across to Kinloch, tucked away near the mouth of the Dart River at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. That’s part of what makes it feel so special.

This is a quieter corner of New Zealand, where the scenery doesn’t need to announce itself. It just opens around you. Mountains rise above the lake. Forest edges close to the shore. Birds sing through the trees. The light changes by the minute across the water.

From here, you’re beautifully placed for some of the South Island’s most memorable wilderness experiences. The Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, is close by. Mt Aspiring National Park is within reach. The Dart River offers that perfect mix of thrill and wonder, with jet boating through a vast glacier-carved valley, then drifting more quietly by Funyak (a cross between a float raft and a kayak) through clear waters and hidden side streams.

On our Ultimate Fiordland and Queenstown Adventure, Kinloch becomes your base for three nights. You’ll hike the Routeburn Track, explore deep into Mt Aspiring National Park by jet boat and Funyak, and still have time to simply be in this extraordinary place.

That balance matters.

Adventure fills the body. Kinloch helps you rest and recover.

Your downtime can be as active, or as restful, as you like

One of the most special things about staying at Kinloch is that downtime doesn’t mean waiting around.

If you need calm time to reset, Kinloch makes it easy. Roll out a yoga mat in the yurt, sink into the hot pool with Lake Wakatipu spread out in front of you, or step into the sauna and watch the weather drift over the peaks. There’s also a movie setup in the yoga yurt for cozy downtime if the weather rolls in.

If your legs still have energy, you’ve got plenty of ways to use it. Walk beneath the beech trees, hire a bike or e-bike and follow quiet tracks through native forest, or ease into the day with sunrise kayaking when the lake is still and the mountains are just beginning to glow.

And if what you’re really craving is good company, Kinloch has that too. Settle into one of the armchairs angled toward the view, share stories over coffee in the cafe, or gather by the lakeshore bonfire with like-minded travelers as the day fades over the water.

That’s the thing about Kinloch. It doesn’t ask you to choose between adventure and rest. It gives you room for both.

After a big day on the Routeburn, there are few better feelings than returning to this peaceful lakeside setting. Boots off. Shoulders down. Maybe a drink on the veranda. Maybe a soak in the ‘Stoke’ hot pool, which incidentally (due to the remote location), was choppered in from the town of Wanaka where it was custom-made. Maybe just the simple joy of sitting somewhere beautiful, with nowhere else you need to be.

Comfort that feels thoughtful, not flashy

Kinloch has that rare kind of comfort that feels deeply personal.

The rooms are warm, calm, and beautifully considered, with soft linens, thoughtful decor, and beds that are rated six-star after a day on the trail. It’s the sort of place where you notice the small things. A quiet corner to read. A window framing the lake or forest. Textures that make the room feel lived in, cared for, and genuinely welcoming.

Nothing feels overdone. Nothing feels generic.

That’s because Kinloch has been shaped slowly, with care.

The comfort here feels thoughtful rather than flashy. Toni and John have shaped the retreat around what guests most enjoy after days spent hiking, paddling, and exploring. Warm rooms. Soft beds. Quiet corners to read. Communal spaces where the armchairs are angled toward the view.

Over time, Toni and John have listened carefully to what guests most enjoy. The result is a beautiful mix of heritage and ease. A place where you can feel the history in the walls, then sink into a soft bed, enjoy a hot shower, and wake ready for whatever the next adventure brings.

Local food, homemade treats, and a good chance of ginger slice

Food tastes different when you’ve earned it outside.

At Kinloch, the bar, cafe, and restaurant focus on honest food made with care, using local and organic ingredients where possible. It’s the kind of food that suits the setting. Fresh, generous, and grounded. Perfect fuel for hiking, biking, paddling, and exploring this wild corner of the South Island.

And then there are the slices.

The homemade organic slices are something of a Kinloch pleasure. The ginger slice comes highly recommended, though the nut brownie makes a very strong case too.

Even better, you might find your coffee and slice served by John Glover himself. John is not only Kinloch’s co-owner, he’s also the current Mayor of Queenstown Lakes District. So yes, there’s a chance you could be served by the mayor of Queenstown, in hiking gear territory, with mountains out the window and a brownie on the plate.

Evenings by the lake

There’s something wonderfully old-school about a lakeshore bonfire.

As evening settles at Kinloch, the mountains begin to darken and the lake takes on that glassy, silver-blue look. A fire crackles down by the beach. Someone passes around marshmallows, and/or maybe a ‘wee dram’ of whiskey. Conversation comes easily, as it often does after a day outside.

These are the moments that stay with you. Warm hands around a mug. Laughter with people who were strangers a few days ago. The hush of the lake beside you.

On an Active Adventures trip, we love these in-between moments, after the hiking, the photos, and the big views, when the day finally settles around you.

Kinloch is made for them.

A stay that reflects the spirit of the trip

Our Ultimate Fiordland and Queenstown Adventure was created to show you the best of this remarkable corner of New Zealand, including the iconic places you’ve dreamed of and the quieter landscapes many visitors miss.

You’ll cruise Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. You’ll hike sections of the Milford, Kepler, and Routeburn Tracks. You’ll explore Queenstown, Glenorchy, and Mt Aspiring National Park. You’ll jet boat and Funyak through the Dart River wilderness.

And in the middle of it all, you’ll stay at Kinloch.

That matters because where you stay shapes how you feel. Kinloch gives you space to absorb the scale of what you’ve seen, a soft landing after big days outside, and a closer connection to the quieter side of New Zealand. The side of birdsong, lake light, local stories, mountain air, homemade slices, and fires down by the shore.

It’s remote, but welcoming. Historic, but deeply comfortable. Active, but restful. A hot pool with a mountain view. A soft bed after the Routeburn. A quiet armchair angled toward the lake. A place restored with care, held by people who know how special it is, and shared with guests in a way that feels warm, genuine, and full of heart.

Stay at the Kinloch Wilderness Retreat when you join us on our Ultimate Fiordland and Queenstown Adventure, and come and experience this hidden corner of New Zealand for yourself.
