New Zealand is where our story began. Fiordland is one of the places that still reminds us why.
Here, mountains rise from deep, still water. Native beech forest wraps around the trails. Ferns unfurl beside clear streams, moss softens the forest floor, and birdsong carries through the canopy. Everything feels alive, ancient, and beautifully untamed.
For 30 years, Active Adventures has been helping travelers find moments like this. We began right here in New Zealand, guiding small groups through the wild places we knew and loved. What started with a few passionate hikers sharing their backyard has grown into guided adventures around the world, but New Zealand is still our home. It’s where our spirit of adventure was shaped.
Our new Ultimate Fiordland & Queenstown Adventure brings that legacy back to its roots.
A Deeper Way to Experience Fiordland, New Zealand

This 9-day New Zealand adventure is designed for travelers who want more than a quick look at the highlights. It’s for those who’d rather linger on a trail, listen to the tui and bellbirds in the trees, and feel the scale of the mountains around them.
Your journey begins in Queenstown, tucked between lake and peaks, before heading deep into Fiordland. From there, the pace shifts. The roads grow quieter. The forests grow thicker. The landscapes feel bigger. And soon, you’re traveling into one of the most dramatic corners of New Zealand (or Aotearoa as known in the indigenous Māori language).
This is small-group adventure travel with time to breathe. Less rushing. More noticing. More of those quiet, goosebump moments that stay with you long after your boots are clean again.
Doubtful Sound, Where the Wilderness Settles Around You

One of the great gifts of this trip is time in Doubtful Sound.
Milford Sound may be the name most travelers know, but Doubtful Sound has a different kind of magic. It’s vast, remote, and deeply still. As you cruise through its dark waters, forested cliffs rise around you. Waterfalls ribbon down through the green, and the whole place feels calm, immense, and untouched.
And then comes the rare part. You stay overnight.
When the sound settles into evening, you get to feel Fiordland on its own terms. No rush. No noise. Just wilderness, water, forest, and that soft sense that you’ve stepped far beyond the ordinary.
Walking New Zealand’s Great Walks

Over the next few days, you’ll lace up your boots for sections of three of New Zealand’s most loved Great Walks, the Milford, Routeburn, and Kepler Tracks.
Each trail has its own personality.
The Milford Track carries you through lush native forest and glacier-carved valleys, where ferns, mosses, and beech trees create a world that feels almost prehistoric. The Routeburn opens into alpine country, with clear rivers, sweeping valleys, and ridgelines that make you pause without meaning to. The Kepler brings wide lake views, mountain air, and that satisfying rhythm of a good day on foot.
You don’t have to take on the full length of each trail to feel their power. With expert local guides leading the way, you get the best of each place, along with the stories, care, and quiet confidence that make all the difference.
Active Days, Unhurried Evenings

This is an active trip, but it’s not about pushing for the sake of it.
You’ll hike, jet boat, and experience our signature “funyaking” adventure in Mount Aspiring National Park. There’ll be plenty to get your heart pumping, but also time to slow down, share a meal, swap stories from the trail, and watch the evening light settle across the mountains.
That balance matters.
We know the best adventures leave you feeling accomplished, connected, and wide awake to the beauty around you. Our guides are there to read the group, smooth the logistics, and make sure you feel supported from the first step to the last. That’s part of the care-first approach that has shaped Active Adventures since the beginning.
Staying Close to the Wild in Glenorchy, South Island

Along the way, you’ll stay in places with character and a real sense of place, including Kinloch Wilderness Retreat.
Here, the pace softens. The mountains sit close. The lake shifts with the light. Native bush frames the view. After a day outdoors, there’s something special about settling into a place that feels connected to the land around it.
This is New Zealand slow travel done right. More time exploring. Less time passing through. A deeper connection to the people, trails, rivers, forests, and wild edges that make this country unforgettable.
Who Is This Trip For?
This Fiordland guided adventure is perfect for travelers who want to experience New Zealand beyond the usual route.
It’s for you if you love the idea of walking iconic trails, but also want time to pause and take it all in. It’s for you if you’re drawn to remote places, thoughtful guiding, and a small group of like-minded travelers. It’s for you if you want the confidence of seamless logistics, without losing the feeling of real adventure.
You’ll explore both Milford and Doubtful Sound, walk through some of New Zealand’s most treasured landscapes, and experience the South Island with people who know it, love it, and are proud to share it.
Come Walk Our Backyard With Us
There’s a moment on this trip when everything seems to open up. Maybe it’s on the deck in Doubtful Sound as forested cliffs rise around you. Maybe it’s on a trail, with silver ferns brushing your boots and a guide pointing out a native bird call you might have missed on your own. Maybe it’s over dinner, when the day’s stories start to tumble out and the mountains shift color in the last light.
That’s the essence of it. Not just seeing New Zealand, but feeling part of it.
Join us on the trail and discover Fiordland the way we love it: lush, wild, welcoming, and full of heart.
30 Years of New Zealand Adventure Heritage
After three decades in business, we’ve learned that great adventure travel isn’t just about where you go. It’s about how you feel while you’re there.
Do you feel welcomed? Do you feel capable? Do you feel like someone has thought about the little things, from the perfect snack at the right moment to the quiet encouragement before a climb?
That’s the part we care about most.
Our New Zealand heritage has always shaped the way we guide. It’s humble, down-to-earth, friendly, and quietly capable. We welcome guests like old friends, and we carry deep respect for the places we explore.
The Ultimate Fiordland & Queenstown Adventure feels especially close to our heart because it brings together so much of what made us who we are. Ancient forests. Remote water. Small groups. Local knowledge. Good people. Big landscapes. And that unmistakable sense of discovery that first inspired us to begin guiding in New Zealand 30 years ago.
