Hiker on swing bridge in Costa Rica rainforest

In Costa Rica, 'pura vida' is not just a saying, it's a way of life. You hear it in the rainforest at first light, feel it in the cool spray of a waterfall, and settle into it as the Pacific sun drops toward the horizon.

Our Classic Costa Rica Adventure and Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure both bring you close to the landscapes, wildlife, and outdoor experiences that make this country so much fun to explore. The main difference is simple: Classic gives you a focused six-day introduction, while Ultimate gives you nine days to travel farther and fit in more activities.

If you’re deciding between them, start with your available time and the pace you enjoy. Then look at the experiences you’d be disappointed to miss.

The Short Answer

A sloth up a tree in the Costa Rica rainforest

Choose the Classic Costa Rica Adventure if you want a shorter trip with a varied mix of rainforest, wildlife, waterfalls, rafting, horseback riding, zip lining, and time on the Pacific coast.

Choose the Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure if you have three extra days and want to see more of the country, including the Pacuare River, Arenal, Rincón de la Vieja, and Nosara, with kayaking, mountain biking, surfing, and a wider range of volcanic and coastal landscapes.

Both trips begin and end in San José. Both have an average group size of 12 and an Activity Level 2 rating which is deemed 'comfortably active'. Current starting prices include accommodations, activities, most meals, transport on the trip, taxes and fees, park entrances, and of course your local guides who are with you throughout your adventure. Always check the trip pages for the latest departure pricing and details.

Choose Classic Costa Rica for a Focused Six-Day Adventure

The Classic works well when you want Costa Rica to feel full, but not sprawling. In six days, you’ll move from lush highlands to the Pacific coast, with a lively collection of guided experiences along the way.

The trip begins with La Paz Waterfall Gardens and an organic farm visit. Around Arenal, the itinerary brings together rainforest, wildlife, river rafting, horseback riding, and time in volcanic landscapes. Later, the mood shifts toward the coast, where zip lining, an outrigger canoe adventure, and Hermosa Beach round out the journey.

This is a natural choice for a first visit, especially when your vacation calendar is tight. You still get the contrast many travelers come to Costa Rica for: green forest, rushing water, volcanic scenery, and warm Pacific air.

The Classic Costa Rica Adventure will be right for you if:

  • Six days fits your schedule.
  • You like a clear, focused route.
  • Horseback riding and outrigger canoeing appeal to you.
  • You want plenty of variety without adding three more travel days.

Choose the Ultimate to See More of Costa Rica

Las Chorreras Waterfalll

The Ultimate gives the journey more room to unfold. Over nine days, you’ll travel through a broader mix of landscapes and add experiences that are not part of Classic.

The Pacuare River is one of the clearest differences. Rather than a single rafting outing, Ultimate takes you into a rainforest river corridor as part of a longer rafting experience. From there, the route continues to Arenal for hiking, waterfall time, and kayaking on Lake Arenal.

Rincón de la Vieja brings a different side of Costa Rica, with volcanic terrain, hot springs, and forest canopy experiences. The final stretch reaches Nosara, where mountain biking and a surfing lesson keep the adventure going beside the Pacific.

The Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure suits travelers who enjoy variety and do not mind changing locations more often. Those three extra days create space for more regions, more activity types, and a deeper sense of how Costa Rica’s landscapes change as you move through the country.

The Ultimate will be right for you if:

  • You have nine days.
  • Rafting the Pacuare River is high on your list.
  • You want kayaking, mountain biking, and surfing in the same trip.
  • You’re happy with a fuller itinerary and more changes of scenery.

How the Adventure Activities Compare

Both trips are multisport, but they build the adventure differently.

Rafting. Classic includes rafting on the Balsa River. Ultimate features the Pacuare River and makes rafting a bigger part of the journey.

Hiking and waterfalls. Both trips bring you onto rainforest and volcanic trails and include time around waterfalls. The exact route and daily conditions can vary, so use the live itinerary for the latest detail.

On two wheels. Mountain biking is a signature part of the Ultimate. It is not included in the Classic adventure highlights.

On the water. The Classic adds an outrigger canoe adventure on the coast, whereas the Ultimate includes kayaking on Lake Arenal and a surfing lesson near Nosara.

Canopy adventure. Both trips include zip lining, giving you a treetop view of Costa Rica’s green interior.

Slower moments. Neither trip is nonstop. However, the beach time, warm water, and the natural pace of life of each region give you room to take a breath between activities.

What the Pace Feels Like

The Classic Costa Rica Adventure is the more compact option. With fewer days and a tighter geographic focus, it is easier to fit around work, family, or a longer vacation elsewhere in Central America.

The Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure covers more ground. That means more variety, but also a busier flow from one region to the next. If waking up somewhere new is part of the excitement for you, that movement can be a real strength. If you prefer to unpack and settle in, the Classic is likely to feel more relaxed.

What Will Your Accommodations Be Like?

The Classic Costa Rica Adventure lets you settle in and make yourself at home, with just two accommodation stays throughout the trip. You'll spend your nights at a comfortable mountain resort surrounded by Costa Rica's volcanic highlands and a relaxed beachside retreat on the Pacific coast, complete with a swimming pool. Fewer hotel changes mean less time packing and unpacking, and more time enjoying the experiences that brought you here.

On the Ultimate Costa Rica Adventure, you'll experience a wider variety of Costa Rica's landscapes and accommodations as you travel across the country. Your journey begins at a city hotel before heading deep into the rainforest for a stay at a rustic ecolodge accessible only by river, which is a truly unique and special experience. You'll also spend time at the same mountain resort in the volcanic highlands, unwind at a foothills retreat with natural hot springs and mud baths, and finish at a peaceful coastal lodge overlooking a quieter stretch of the Pacific Ocean. Each stay offers a different perspective on Costa Rica, adding another layer to your adventure.

Which Costa Rica Adventure Should You Book?

There is no lesser option here. The better trip is the one that fits your time, budget, and travel style.

If this is your first time in Costa Rica and you want a satisfying taste of rainforest, wildlife, volcanic scenery, and the Pacific coast in under a week, choose Classic. It keeps the decision simple and the experiences varied.

If you can stay longer and want the journey itself to feel bigger, choose Ultimate. The extra days open the door to the Pacuare River, Rincón de la Vieja, Nosara, and a broader set of activities on land and water.

Whichever you choose, you’ll share the experience with a small group and guides who know how to smooth the way. You can focus on the next trail, the next paddle stroke, and the next wildlife sighting.
