If you're interested in hiking New Zealand, hiking South America, hiking Nepal or other multisport adventure tours - you've come to the right place

Over 16 years, we've put dirt in over 26,000 treads of boots on small group adventure vacations (6 - 14 people). Though we don't offer economy tours per se, our adventure trips are well priced, and our clients are happy to pay for the advantages of taking a small group tour. We know, because they tell us!

He said, she said...

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND turned me on to active travel and to New Zealand. The Rimu provided the perfect way to enjoy the country's natural beauty... by trekking, biking, kayaking, riding and rafting through it. Each drop of sweat was rewarded with an astounding view. From now on I hope to explore other countries the same way.

Suzanne Spears (California, USA) - January 2002

New Zealand exceeded my expectations in every way, and I can't think of a more fun way of seeing it than with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND. The guides were great, the places they took us to were cool, and they fit twice as much into a day than you can ever do if you're trying to arrange everything yourself.

David & Ilona Strull (Nevada, USA) - October 2001

At last an adventure tour company that delivers exactly what they promise! Varied and challenging activities in the heart of New Zealand's finest scenery combined with comfortable and unique accommodation reflecting the diversity of the country that the regular tourist doesn't see.

Andy Watts (Bristol, United Kingdom) - November 2001

You can't say you have really experienced New Zealand until you have walked to one of the many waterfalls, listened to a tui call, and felt the cool green of tree ferns and southern beeches. The kind of hiking experiences offered by a group like ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND lets you do all this and still enjoy being pampered by good food and comfortable lodging.

Judith Gordon (Georgia, USA) - December 2001

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND offers the best introduction to New Zealand's South Island available. This trip has it all -- hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and cycling through the most beautiful scenery on earth. Absolutely the best group adventure trip I have ever done.

Monica Beary (California, USA) - January 2002

We really believe that ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is one of the best groups providing trips around New Zealand. If your idea of a vacation is one in which you might get you feet a little wet, be out of breath at times, and still be having fun, this is a great trip. This is one vacation where the word 'stress' is never thought of and you can really sit back and enjoy the complete relaxation that overcomes you.

Dallas & Sabrina Bishop (Michigan, USA) - May 2002

I'd recommend this trip to anyone with a sense of adventure. It was the best organized trip I've ever taken (I've used Abercrombie & Kent and Micato Tours before). I really appreciated the absence of sightseeing/shopping/touristy activities and the total focus on activities and a local experience. I felt a world apart from the many Japanese tour buses we passed every day!

Amy McLaughlin (New York, USA) - April 2002

We will never forget our ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip. We have wonderful memories and pictures. The group dynamics (meeting new people and having fun) were great and really helped make the trip. It was a once in a lifetime adventure and we enjoyed every minute. The customer care was top notch and the prices are very reasonable for all the excitement that was packed into two weeks.

Greta & John Dunn (California, USA) - August 2002

This was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. The guides were more like friends than guides and really seemed to care that we were having a good time and that they were meeting our expectations as well as educating us about their country. A return trip to New Zealand is definitely on my list of priorities and it is because of this experience.

Toni Efflandt (California, USA) - October 2002

If you love adventure travel and are short on time, you must do the Tui trip. The South Island has the most fantastic scenery I have seen after extensive travel. Our guides were superb, and the activities were well organized, and offered lots of variety. I can't wait to take another trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND.

Bill Garvin (Florida, USA) - November 2002

This was one of the best vacations ever. I could have never organized the amount of activities that I did with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND and the guides were great at taking care of all the hard parts of the vacation so I could just have fun. You also took me to many places I would have never thought of visiting and really loved. I had the time of my life.

Krysten Comoglio (California, USA) - October 2002

It was just fantastic!!! It was the best activity I have ever experienced, in a land that today seems almost surreal since I have been back in the US. I would sincerely like to thank you for the experience and the unique and real approach to trek, tramp, bike, and kayak!!!!!! Good for you guys, it is nice to know that there are people with true life and adventure.

Mark Kling (Illinois, USA) - November 2002

An unforgettable trip! Great for the body and soul. Beautiful scenery, challenging activities, fun-loving fellow travelers, and amusing guides - the recipe for a perfect vacation. Liked the mix of multiple sports, liked the fact that the emphasis was on the sights and the activities rather then on the food and 4 star lodging. (Thumbs up that it wasn't a Yuppie trip!)

Marla & Zack Vogel (New York, USA) - November 2002

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is a top-notch organization, run by people who like what they do. Everyone I had any contact with, be it phone or e-mail, was really enthusiastic and patient. This was an awesome adventure that certainly challenged me and surprised me every day in some way. I LOVED the little, out of the way places where we stayed. This trip has changed the way I look at things! Thanks for an amazing time in your wonderful country!

Karen Willson (Texas, USA) - November 2002

Everyone plans a trip with high expectations, but experienced travelers know that there will be some disappointments. Our ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip was that amazing vacation where everything met the highest hopes we started with.

Teresa & Mike Landers (Texas, USA) - November 2002

Our ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND guides were the best we've ever experienced after hiking throughout the world. Actually gained weight on this trip due to the good food, great preparation and extraordinary people. We were all very impressed with the guides and the overall trip and would recommend this trip to any adventurers.

Georgene Franzen (Minnesota, USA) - October 2002

I must say that I travel a lot and I know many countries, some of them are impressibly beautiful, but it was the first time that I've been in a country where both nature and people were friendly. New Zealand is not a country in the normal meaning of the word. New Zealand is a way of living, a way of interacting with other people, a way of interacting with nature. An example to the world!

Oto Oliveira (Canico, Portugal) - October 2002

Thank you so much for organizing an unforgettable trip of a lifetime! My travel time in New Zealand was spectacular and very memorable. The opportunity to challenge myself physically while at the same time experience a magnificent country with superb, knowledgeable guides was extremely rewarding.

Patricia (Texas, USA) - December 2002

One of my FAVORITE trips EVER. Thank you for the Rimu trip that far exceeded my expectations! We saw places and had experiences that we would have never seen or had on our own or with any other kind of tour company. The trip was conducted in a professional manner yet always felt relaxed. Our guides created an atmosphere in which we were all like a group of old friends.

Carmen & Andrew Yung (Texas, USA) - November 2002

We attended on our honeymoon and we were searching for an active trip that would challenge us, as well as blow us away with incredible scenery - and that is exactly what we got! I would say that there were at least 5 great physical or mental challenges on the trip. Everybody felt as if they saw and accomplished great things at the end of the trip.

Craig Podrebarac & Ginger Butler (Ontario, Canada) - December 2002

I have never taken a trip like this before and never would have signed up for it if it was not recommended so highly to me by a friend. I did not think I would enjoy being part of an organized tour, and I was so pleasantly surprised. My overall impression was that your team does an amazing job of ensuring that your clients truly enjoy your country and their vacation.

Patti Stevenson (Connecticut, USA) - November 2002

Excellent! This trip was definitely worth every penny. The guides were fabulous who had the inside scoop on everything NZ. I definitely got a true sense of New Zealand from this trip. I would have probably never found places like Braemar Station or Okarito by myself. Overall, you guys succeeded because it was one of my best trips ever.

Mark Nakamura (New York, USA) - December 2002

I think ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is a class act. Great trip. I totally got away from my routine, and didn't have to worry about the details - our guides took care of everything. A great escape from the sometimes stressful life at home.

Eileen O'Connor (Texas, USA) - December 2002

Normally I would try to get about myself, but I knew that to see all I wanted to I wouldn't have the time. It was a great experience. I felt I did see some 'real' New Zealand places, which I would not have found travelling around on my own. It was nice to be off the tourist track. I wanted to challenge myself physically while seeing some amazing parts of the country. It gave me what I wanted.

Charlotte Norris (British Columbia, Canada) - December 2002

It was challenging and rewarding. I had never been backpacking or adventure touring before, and so I had to really stretch, but I think I would like to take many more trips like this one. I may have formed a habit. Great guides, great destinations, great all around.

Monica Gullickson (Florida, USA) - November 2002

Outstanding staff and support network that succeeds at cramming a year's worth of sightseeing and activities into a two week period. Great vistas and wildly varying terrain from sea kayaking and glaciers to rain forests and scree fields... this is the only way to see God's own land.

Yancey Cowen (Kansas, USA) - Janaury 2003

A great vacation starts and ends by going to New Zealand with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND. They allow you to experience New Zealand as the locals do and make it impossible not to return! The trip was fantastic. The group became an extended family, the scenery impressed and the activities were challenging enough. This trip was exactly what I was looking for in a vacation. Active, relaxing, fun and truly interesting.

Rob Kardell (California, USA) - December 2002

Loved it! I'm ready to go back any time and I'm now a complete convert to outdoor adventure vacations! I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and I totally did (in a good way)! I loved all the places we went to, particularly those off the beaten path. We all got a long really well. I also loved doing something I had never done before and found that it wasn't half as hard as I expected it would be.

Ann Rich (Indiana, USA) - December 2002

Our trip to New Zealand will, till I lose my memory entirely, be an extraordinary moment, marked by gorgeous vistas, terribly accommodating and considerate people, and great times amidst God's own green earth. Favourite parts? Where would one stop in the listing, how could one parse 'tween so many fine memories?

Tom Theado & Stephanie Sierra (Ohio, USA) - December 2002

Choosing ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND to guide me around the South Island was the best decision I made when planning my New Zealand vacation. Our guides were full of energy and knowledge, and in general great people to hang out with for 2 weeks! I did such a small amount of research into the country before my visit, so I was at their mercy, and I certainly was not disappointed!

Marcy Glick (Colorado, USA) - November 2002

Wonderful. We can't say enough great things or brag about our trip too much. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND's Rimu trip was one of the experiences of our lives. Our guides were knowledgeable, fun, experienced and great cooks. They were able to motivate a diverse group into a family who looked out for each other, enjoyed each other's company and who have become friends.

Janice & Bob Duffy (Bermuda) - December 2002

I'm recommending ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND to all of my friends. I had a fantastic time. Initially, I was concerned about not visiting some of the more famous sites (mainly Milford Track), but I soon realized that the beauty of the Rimu trip is that the tour takes you off the beaten path, away from the more touristy destinations. The beauty and magic of New Zealand lives up to its reputation.

Dave Barone (California, USA) - December 2002

What a country! What beauty! What diversity! What a way to see it! No hassle, no worries. Here is a trip that takes you smack bang in to the middle of this beautiful land and brings you into direct contact with its diversity through a variety of activities. It stimulates the body, it stimulates the brain and it stimulates each of the senses. It was such a relief not to stay in a bunch of bland hotels.

Annie Adam (United Kingdom) - November 2002

Absolutely loved it. The RIMU trip is one of the best trips I have ever been on. For a first-time independent traveler, I could not have imagined a better trip. The activities were amazing, the scenery simply breathtaking, and the whole experience phenomenal. I never knew a group of strangers could become so close in such a short period of time, or have that much fun and laugh that much.

Clare Donnelly-Taylor (Perth, Australia) - December 2002

Simply fantastic, beyond all of my high expectations. I'd tell anyone to go - they will be on the plane the day after I speak to them!!! The only problem is, people might think I am lying, because all I have to say are good things about my trip. Every activity was great. I am quite active, and I was tired and well fed after every day!

Yuma Morita (New York, USA) - November 2002

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND took the tedium out of planning a great vacation! We simply put ourselves in their hands, and had a wonderful experience. I can't imagine how we could ever have planned that ourselves, even if we'd had the time to research it all. No decisions -- just fresh air, exercise and good company.

Ron Walker (Pennsylvania, USA) - December 2002

We couldn't have asked for anything more. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND helped make our trip to New Zealand truly the experience of a lifetime. We can't find enough superlatives to sufficiently describe our feelings about our trip. Paradise is the best word to describe New Zealand and this trip was wonderful. The guides worked hard and supported the participants with their concerns and needs.

Fern, Gary & David Malowitz (Florida, USA) - December 2002

I had an amazing time. The Rimu trip was a great balance of challenging hikes with stunning views, atmospheric walks through rain forests and on beaches, biking, sea kayaking, star gazing, laughing, and soul searching. On the Rimu, one can experience the beauty and intimacy of a country whose small size offers endless treasures to the adventurous traveler.

Melissa Kleinbart (California, USA) - December 2002

The Rimu trip is completely satisfying in terms of activities, adventure, and gorgeous views. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to see most of the South Island in an active way without worrying about accommodations and meals. Our guides were terrific: energetic, kind, fun, and informative. They are very competent, and I was always confident that they would make each day enjoyable and carefree.

Liz Segre (California, USA) - December 2002

I had a great trip and have many wonderful memories of New Zealand. New Zealand was such a beautiful and scenic place, beyond my wildest dreams. The backpack trip was very challenging but definitely worth the effort for the fantastic scenery and awesome views from the top of Mt Angelus.

Maggie Niles (Virginia, USA) - December 2002

It was a fabulous adventure! We saw things and did things we do not do at home. It created a great sense of accomplishment. This was not a vacation, it was an adventure of a lifetime!

Stu, Steph, Shari & Stacey Brokowsky (California, USA) - December 2002

My trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND was my best vacation ever! The organization was nearly perfect, and there are always alternate plans in case of bad weather, tired legs, or whatever. My guides were wonderful and made the trip just fantastic. If you are considering a trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND, I'm sure you will not regret it!

Jim Core (Ohio, USA) - December 2002

Keep up the good work! It was all very well organised and I know we saw many places that we would never have seen without your expert care. Your country is awesome! The people are wonderful, the food was terrific, and the countryside - from the sheep station to the huts - everything was unbelievable!

Connie & Jessica McMillan (Wyoming, USA) - December 2002

Don't go on an ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip if you work behind a desk, you won't want to slide behind it ever again and will be counting the days to your next adventure. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is inspirational!

Carol & Steve Beckett (Oldham, United Kingdom) - December 2002

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND succeeded in awakening in me that thirst for exploration and adventure. If there ever is a second Eden, the views witnessed on the South Island would have to be it. The views witnessed on the South Island definitely have my eyes looking more to the mountains, the forest, and the coastline, rather than to concrete and steel.

Harold Amogan (California, USA) - December 2002

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND provides an outstanding way to experience New Zealand, one in which all the hassles of decision making is done for you... outdoor camp for adults!!!

Sheryl Bear (Georgia, USA) - December 2002

Our guides proved to be able to handle just about anything, they were the masters of flexibility and tolerance, able to leap tall buses with a single bound, whip up roadside gourmet meals (watch out Martha Stewart) and always with a smile. On this trip you will see the most beautiful places on earth that will please all the senses and live in your soul for an eternity. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Mary Ann Trapp (California, USA) - December 2002

An incomparable outdoor experience of a lifetime. I will treasure it always. Definitely the best trip I've taken (and I've been to some pretty great places!) I have been raving about it non-stop. The itinerary was actually a little more challenging than I thought it might be, but I was never disappointed. I felt like I accomplished something every day.

Peggy Cordell (New Mexico, USA) - December 2002

Absolutely the right mix between active and relaxing, organized and free time. Spectacular scenery, out of the way places and friendly faces... ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is a fabulous way to see New Zealand!

Ann Pawluk (London, England) - December 2002

Awesome! Loved the Nelson Lakes Hike, and kayaking in Milford. Nelson was very challenging and exhilarating to complete. The kayaking was fun (my first time on this trip) and scenery amazing. I still had a grin on my face hours later.

Kelly Pastorek (Virginia, USA) - December 2002

Extremely challenging and rewarding. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND just makes it happen. Lots of enthusiasm, encouragement, and also, New Zealand has so much to offer in and of itself. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND tested my limits, both physically and mentally, and the end result was incredible pride in learning what I was capable of achieving if I focused my energies, and what I would not have accomplished on my own.

Marcel Bolintiam (DC, United States) - December 2002

This trip was a wonderful adventure for my 28-year-old daughter and her 58-year-old mother to have. We will always treasure the memories of the time we spent together as well as the fabulous scenery, wonderful people of NZ and the great group we were with for 2 weeks.

Anne & Liz Fishman (Maryland, USA) - December 2002

Fabulous! I've never been on an organized active trip - and now I'm a firm believer and highly recommend them. I loved the fact that we were off the beaten track and I feel I saw the real New Zealand. I loved it so much I want to retire there.

Christine Chang (California, USA) - December 2002

We had a great time, thank you very much. Originally we had planned to do the Milford Track and then independently explore the South Island - but I'm sure we saw much more going with you. Best trip ever! Literally.

Sue Johanson (Adelaide, Australia) - December 2002

Great. Better than I expected. I went into this trip with that sort of snobby disdain that backpackers often have with respect to going on 'guided' trips, and came out a convert. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND have somehow figured out the perfect mix of activities, locations, etc. to preserve a sense of exploration, while catering to the more mundane everyday tasks like planning, cooking, and driving.

Jim Bishop (Tennessee, USA) - November 2002

My trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. I have traveled a fair amount, but never on a group trip. The guides, Paula & Kevin, were so wonderful. Your country simply spectacular!!! The activities challenging and diverse. The food was great. You attracted other active people. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Theresa Fitzgerald (New York, USA) - November 2002

In one word WOW. I did not think that the trip would expose the South Island as much as it did. The accommodations were absolutely perfect. I could not have imagined them any better. The views were incredible. The locations were very well thought out as well. I can honestly say after thinking about it for five minutes, that nothing needs to be done to improve the trip.

Richard Moss & Denise Sweetwood (Florida, USA) - December 2002

I have traveled to 62 countries around the world, and would rate my ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND experience as one of the best trips ever. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and created a wonderful group chemistry. They were also able to adapt the trip to the individual needs of group members.

Bill Huss (Massachusetts, USA) - January 2003

Trip of a lifetime! I absolutely loved everything about my Rimu experience! Especially loved Punakaiki and Milford Sound, but every place was beautiful! New Zealand was breathtaking, the activities were challenging and fun, and our guides were spectacular. Best vacation I've had!

Pam Mayer (Arizona, USA) - December 2002

We had an amazing vacation. We both loved the 3 day backpacking section in Nelson Lakes, as we had never done anything like it before. (We had great weather too, which helped.) We had a great time, saw amazing scenery and did things we had never done before. It was a trip of a lifetime and you definitely whetted our appetite for more - we will go back to New Zealand.

Fiona & Matthew Parkinson (Rhode Island, USA) - December 2002

Great!! Fabulous!! I'm so glad I made the decision to go on this type of trip. I have friends who are in NZ right now doing the Milford Track. My original plan had been to go with them. It's sad that they won't know what they missed out on not going with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND.

Rebecca Nelson (Minnesota, USA) - January 2003

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND is a class act. The company was thorough and complete in getting us information and responding quickly to any questions/concerns. In New Zealand everything was clearly well-planned and well-organized and the office and the guides were incredibly flexible and able to handle just about every special request.

Lauren Westreich (California, USA) - January 2003

Never having done a group trip before, I didn't really know what to expect... but we had a great time. I enjoyed the shared meals more than I thought I would...there was a great sense of camaraderie. The hiking was phenomenal. Queenstown was great... but hard to beat the sunset at Okarito. And Fiordland... exquisite. It really was an adventure, and a trip I will always look back on fondly.

Jason Walters & Jaime Peter (Oregon, USA) - January 2003

Absolutely excellent. Fantastic. Words cannot do justice to the trip. If you are looking for a trip that offers physical challenge, mental refreshment and emotional refueling, the Rimu trip is the perfect adventure. New Zealand is an environment of pristine beauty, emotional depth and breathtaking scenery. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND offered the perfect balance in the Rimu trip.

Patricia Akstulewicz (Illinois, USA) - January 2007

Incredible, amazing, unbelievable, top-notch. Way beyond my expectations, I loved going where the average tourist cannot. Discovering New Zealand with the ACTIVE crew was a mind-blowing, unbelievably moving experience. A day has not gone by since my return to 'reality' where I haven't stopped and thought about the new friendships I made.

Carla Hinman (Montana, USA) - December 2002

This trip made dreams come true. The Milford Sound was my favorite destination because it is the most beautiful and surreal thing I have ever seen. If a genie had emerged from a lamp and granted me 3 wishes... this experience was better. The only downfall of this trip is that it ended.

Stacy Rothenberg (Arizona, USA) - January 2003

Awesome, just enough structure to the trip with all the flexibility needed to cater to all. After almost bailing out due to the circumstances I found myself in last November, this trip validated my outlook on life. You exceeded our expectations and we'd do it again in a heart beat.

Lutz Kunze (California, USA) - January 2003

I LOVED New Zealand so much I want to move there! And your company really gave the feeling that we were seeing things that we wouldn't be able to do or see if it was booked by ourselves. Siberia Experience was so different from anything I have done or would be able to do in the US Northeast and the scenery was so breathtaking. From the plane ride out to the Jet boat in...it was wonderful.

Kristi Marvin (New York, USA) - February 2003

Absolutely fantastic! I would not have changed a thing. I enjoyed every single activity, the short distances in the bus, the food, the company. This was by far the best tour orientated trip I have ever been on. I liked the philosophy of the Rimu trip.

Jeff Robinson (Doha, Qatar) - January 2003

It was a great adventure, with great views, physically challenging at times, and something new everyday. The food, accommodations, activities, and people were great. It is a great trip to take with a special someone or to do alone and meet lots of cool people.

Gretchen Kunze (California, USA) - January 2003

We had the trip of our lives and came back in better shape than when we started. Never in our lives have we ever felt so relaxed and carefree.

Steve & Louise Golub (Connecticut, USA) - January 2003

Bloody brilliant. This was definitely the way to see New Zealand. I would never have experienced the diversity of the South Island without the help and knowledge of the ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND crew. Top marks.

Paul Fitzgerald (Tres Cantos, Spain) - December 2002

Highest possible marks. Well-planned, well-executed tour. I very much liked 'getting there'. I am old and slow and not nearly as in shape as my tour mates and the hikes in particular were challenging for me... but once I got there it was pure heaven; entirely worth the effort expended. Just a great and challenging trip, with outstanding guides, in a beautiful country, with exceptional people.

Steve Gawron (Minnesota, USA) - February 2003

This trip met my impossibly high expectations - I spent 2 of the best weeks of my life being challenged physically as I played in spectacularly beautiful surrounding, enjoyed wonderful meals and the fellowship of like-minded travelers and fantastic guides. The trip was outstanding and I cannot say enough wonderful things about Damon and Paula, who led the trip.

Tim Fries (Vermont, USA) - February 2003

ACTIVE!!! Active is an appropriate word to describe the trip - we were challenged, entertained and had an incredible time. You guys have energy. All of our guides were amazing. Staying positive the entire time and really enhancing our experience. It was great to see the real New Zealand instead of just the tourist traps.

Stacy & Jason Vieder (Michigan, USA) - February 2003

I feel like I got a taste of the real New Zealand and its people - and was very relaxed after the trip. Every day we had an 'Oh my goodness, we're in New Zealand' moment. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND and its fantastic team really brought the dream alive.

Ina King (Maryland, USA) - February 2007

Fantastic -- couldn't have been better. To put it in a nutshell, you get some awesome challenging hiking, a taste of kayaking, and the opportunity to meet some wonderful people from all over the world with your same interests, in a country and setting that is often breathtaking.

Paul & Carolyn Myers (South Carolina, USA) - February 2003

It was a great way to share part of my traveling with a group of people who also like being outside, feeling energized by nature. I felt like it took me to the best spots within the region we covered, showing me a lot more than I could have seen by myself in the same period of time.

Amy Slotnick (California, USA) - March 2003

Amazing! You know how to provide a great trip with personable staff. Everything seemed well organized! Even when there needed to be adjustments in the plan, it was nice to know that Damon & Mat had things nicely under control & always unruffled -- seemed that way to me, anyway ;) Never had to think about a thing!

Julie Matyasic (Michigan, USA) - February 2003

Had a blast. The guides were great, the mix of group worked very well. It was fantastic for me (a working mother of two) to have someone else worry about the details - I had someone prepare food for me, clean up, drive me to fabulous places where I could exercise for hours, and find cool places to stay. I will highly recommend your company to anyone and everyone.

Rebecca Myatt (Texas, USA) - February 2003

I would say that the whole trip was a huge big buzz. An awesome trip, well run but in a relaxed friendly manner - you do not feel that you are a sheep on a conveyor belt. Plenty of laughs, activities and amazing surroundings. Found the countryside awesome (bit like home in some places), enjoyed the people on the trip, and liked the New Zealand people.

Claire Wishart (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) - December 2002

The trip was amazing! =) What a great way to see New Zealand! You don't have to cook, you don't have to drive, you just have to sit back and relax. By relax, of course I mean climb the mountains to see the amazing views from the ridgeline, or kayak the sound while dolphins and seals swim close by, or take a hike to see the power of a waterfall, or ride a bike through the valleys, or... you get the idea.

Edward Glowacki (Illinois, USA) - January 2003

Trip was absolutely amazing! The Tui tour is challenging but not impossible. Kent took us to some amazing places off the beaten track that we never would have found on our own. I could have used a few days on the beach after the trip to recuperate from all the activity, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! I wish I could have stayed in New Zealand longer!

Nicole Caty (Ontario, Canada) - March 2003

Exceeded all of my expectations. My favorite part was the places we stayed. It is evident that ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND has taken great care to find the most interesting and cool places to stay, while taking into account the basics of comfort to ensure a great night's sleep after a long active day!

Aleksandra Lubavs & Kelly Doss (Illinois, USA) - February 2003

I would have to dig out my thesaurus to find all the right words! Put simply, better than I dreamed. Personally speaking, I wondered about spending so much money on 'myself' (by the way, your trips are really well priced), but was it ever worth it. I think everyone around me has benefited from my getting away and having an absolutely super experience.

Melissa Krispense (Illinois, USA) - December 2002

Definitely a major thumbs up from both of us!!! It is going down as the best vacation we've taken... ever!!! We've been telling anyone who will listen, what an incredible time/adventure we had with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND!

Stephanie & Allen Cassano (Okinawa, Japan) - December 2003

This was our first time to take a guided trip and put ourselves totally in the hands of strangers. Initially it seemed somewhat of a risk, trusting our money to strangers on the other side of the world. The ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND staff exceeded our expectations and we hope to join them again in a couple of years.

Steve & Val Hyer (Washington, USA) - February 2003

If you are looking for THE group to take you on a whirlwind tour of everything that makes New Zealand one of the best places on Earth to be outdoors, LOOK NO FURTHER! This company has the most courteous, professional, and knowledgeable staff we have ever had the pleasure of working with, and the variety and quality of locations visited and activities available is simply astonishing.

Derek Stratman & Ellen Jennings (Seoul, Korea) - April 2003

Great guides, beautiful places, delicious food. You want more than that? Good luck. I never felt like I was surrounded by tourists. I felt like I saw places I wouldn't have seen on my own. ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND kicks ass.

Andrew Reich (California, USA) - April 2003

ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND gets straight A's from us. Every aspect of our trip was a delight and far surpassed our expectations. The guides were stellar, the bus far more comfortable and roomy then we expected, the food much better than we'd believed possible and the program of adventures just one wonder after another.

John 'Jock' Sturges & Maia Davis (Washington, USA) - April 2003

Charles Darwin once described New Zealand as 'one of the most inhospitable countries within the limits of the globe' and I would like to say that he was absolutely wrong; New Zealand is one of the most hospitable places on the globe, it was absolutely breathtaking and he would change his mind if he could take a Winter Rimu tour.

Phil Bateman (Ontario, Canada) - May 2003

Incredible, it exceeded our expectations. The challenges that were put in front of us were incredible and the satisfaction in completing them was immeasurable. It was great to bond with a group of strangers and work together to achieve the goal we all set out on - to enjoy ourselves and have the ultimate vacation in a challenging and beautiful environment.

Trent & Sydney Young (Florida, USA) - May 2003

It was a fantastic experience for me as my first trip alone. There are so many physical adventures that I never thought I could do that I can. Every day was a new trial for me and it was such a great feeling of triumph at the end of each day. Everyone was so kind and our group got along very well. This trip was an amazing adventure that really boosted my self-esteem.

Lisa Fahey (California, USA) - March 2003

The Winter Rimu really was better than we anticipated. Due to work, my wife and I had to travel to New Zealand in June (start of winter). That was the best stroke of good fortune. This is really the best way to sample the South island. Some days we were cold, others just cool, and according to the couples we met - no mosquitoes!

Thomas & Natalie Miller (Louisiana, USA) - June 2003

It was an amazing trip for our whole family. It was a fast paced trip, as you told us it would be. Kent was a wonderful guide, our van was just right, and Kent and our hosts in various places made sure we had fish and vegetables. We would be delighted to take another trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND and have already recommended you to our friends.

Jay, Janet, Blake & Hillary McDonald (Virginia, USA) - May 2003

We were a little nervous booking a trip from the internet - especially in a different country. However, from beginning to end - we were impressed by the professionalism of everyone we talked to. We had a great time. Your company exceeded our expectations in every way. Looking back, we could not recall any part of the trip that disappointed us.

Thomas & Carol Cardin (Florida, USA) - April 2003

A lot of fun! We found NZ to be everything we had hoped it would be. Guides were one of the best parts of the trip! They were highly patient, flexible and accommodating - and very amusing! The guides provided the opportunity to see aspects of NZ that we would have missed if we would have done the trip by ourselves. Definitely felt we got our money's worth.

Paul Ware & Abby Goss (California, USA) - May 2003

I will always know that I have seen and done things that other people will only dream about in their lives. I went on holiday and lived an adventure.

Deano Crumley (Colorado, USA) - June 2003

To anyone who comes to do an ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip with an open mind, I'll say this; if you don't leave New Zealand rejuvenated and able to appreciate the joys in life again, I will personally hike to Welcome Flat Hut in my underwear in the middle of winter.

Allison Green (Cambridge, United Kingdom) - July 2003

Brilliant! Book it NOW! I have wanted to go to NZ for 18 years; this is the best 'active' guided trip around. I wish I didn't wait so long. This is my first guided trip & I did not have to think or worry about anything. I am recommending your company to ALL of my friends. I want to return within 6 months. Thanks for the adventure! I look forward to doing it AGAIN, soon.

Theresa Maisen (California, USA) - October 2006

My wife and I definitely made the right choice in picking the Rimu for our active vacation. Our guides, John and Liz, were very friendly and fed us well. The trip is very much as advertised. We each got as much exercise as we wanted, and had plenty of options for relaxing. We left with a good knowledge of the people, places, and lifestyles of New Zealand.

Paul Smith (Georgia, USA) - October 2003

Fabulous trip! A trip that offers exactly what it says. Fantastic experience... one of my friends remarked on how much happier and healthier I looked after the trip. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors and is prepared to have a go at anything!

Louise Clark (Edinburgh, Scotland) - October 2003

What a great way to celebrate my 66th birthday -- hiking and kayaking the South Island with 13 of my new best friends. I did things that I've never done before and had a wonderful time along the way. Thanks to Ange and Nic and all the ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND staff... the trip exceeded my expectations.

Diann Brashier (California, USA) - October 2003

When you feel like the stresses of everyday life are about to envelop you, book a flight to New Zealand. My sabbatical from work was designed for just such a trip... a chance to clear your head, rejuvenate your soul, and refresh your body. There were times when you felt like you're the only person on the planet, and you appreciate that awareness so much more once you come home!

Kate Bowden (Oregon, USA) - October 2003

Loved it. Great itinerary and great people. I like the small nature of the company, the guides were first rate, and it was great driving around in a smaller bus that did not have a huge logo on the side. Felt less like a tourist and more like a traveler. We got to see and do SO MUCH, if I had gone on my own in the same amount of time, I'd have never pulled it off so well.

Chris Dubuque (California, USA) - October 2003

I loved it. We wanted to go somewhere exciting and New Zealand certainly has a reputation for being an adventurous destination. Plus it was a nice escape from winter conditions at home. We had a great time. We did all the things we wanted to and saw a great deal of the South Island. We didn't know where to go or where to stay, so it was nice to find a company that would handle all the logistics.

Michael Dorman (Washington, USA) - Nov 2003

The trip was a terrific adventure that I imagine few, if any, can top. My goal was to experience New Zealand and do things I had always wanted to do (like bungy, skydive, hike and kayak) but had never had the opportunity to do -- and I did just that. The guides were great -- very well-informed, friendly, fun. Everything was extremely well-organized and coordinated. I loved it.

Stacey Skole (New York, USA) - November 2003

Fantastic!! Every aspect was perfect. I have always wanted to go to New Zealand because everyone who has been there has said what a wonderful country it is and how warm and friendly New Zealanders are. It's the most beautiful country I have every been to. Our Tui trip exceeded our expectations.

Christine & Ted Escobar (Hawaii, USA) - November 2003

The Tui was a unique and unforgettable experience. It was impossible to know beforehand how much natural beauty we would see in such unique circumstances. The active part of ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND allows you to experience and see the world in a different way. It was wonderful.

Joseph Regan (Massachusetts, USA) - November 2003

It was far and away the most enjoyable active trip we've done. I really enjoyed seeing parts of the country that you wouldn't normally see as a visitor. It has made us really think about what we want to do when we go travelling in the future (cities just don't seem as interesting anymore) and has sparked an interest to find out what hiking trails and facilities are available here in Canada.

Steve Gamble & Deanna Rothwell (Ontario, Canada) - October 2003

The trip was amazing. Since returning to my little corner of the world, I've talked non-stop about my trip to New Zealand and the ACTIVE NZ tour. The first task I undertook when I returned home was to call Andrew at ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND and tell him what an awesome time I had on the Rimu tour. New Zealand is my mind's image of Utopia.

Larissa Fawkner (New York, USA) - November 2003

To see and experience the real New Zealand, go with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND! There is nothing like tramping through the forests or kayaking through the lagoon to get the real feel for the place. They feed you so well, that I gained 11 pounds yet I lost 1 inch off my waist. In fact, I'm still buzzing every time I look at the pictures I took or hear from my new friends. In summary, the trip was awesome!

Oleg de Bode (California, USA) - October 2003

You pushed me out of my comfort zone with some of the activities which I was looking for. However, at the end of the day it was always nice to have a pleasant place to stay, good food and good company to talk about the day's adventure.

Baird Hansen (New York, USA) - March 2005

This was an amazing way to see a good part of the South Island in 8 days. It was like living in a postcard for a week. The activities were invigorating, the fellow travelers were phenomenal and the memories were unforgettable. We were sad to leave.

Tim and Katie Schuster (Michigan, USA) - February 2005

The Tui trip was the most exhilarating and memorable vacation I have ever had in sixty years. This was New Zealand at its best!

Pat Pilkington (Texas, USA) - January 2005

If you are an active person, the Tui trip is the perfect introduction to the beauty of the South Island. It's a get-up-and-go kind of vacation that leaves you wanting more at the end.

Leora Goren (California, USA) - November 2004

The most active journey I ever did. Loved every minute of it!

Hendrik Haddorp (Holzgerlingen, Germany) - February 2005

Rimu, simply put, is the ultimate.

Joel Seneshen (Victoria, Australia) - February 2005

What an incredible, active, take-your-mind-off-everything-else trip. Great food, great guides, great group, and great places. I liked visiting New Zealand in winter and would do it again. I know I've had a good vacation when I get back and immediately find myself checking the company's web-site for other trips I can take with them. After Winter Rimu, that's what I found myself doing.

Helen Bateman (Texas, USA) - July 2006

The trip was amazingly well-organized, outdoor oriented, and an awesome adventure. Being cared for so well let us relax in general with "no worries". We were so glad to have gotten off the beaten track.

Margie Whitnah (California, USA) - December 2005

This would be my first trip out of the country, so I needed some guidance. The trip we've just returned from far exceeded all of my expectations. We were in a group, yet at times I stood on a snow covered mountain, next to a glacier-blue river, or in the middle of a wide open valley, and felt completely alone... completely free. I can't imagine not having taken this trip. It was one I will always, always remember...

Amy Smith (California, USA) - August 2007

Nothing beats ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND. It's an all around amazing trip. With a perfect mixture of everyday and extraordinary experiences. By far the best trip that I've ever been on.

Julie Avellino (New Jersey, USA) - July 2007

I had an amazing time in one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. This was the trip of a lifetime, and I will be dreaming about the places I visited for years to come!

Jennifer Benedik-Fragman (Quebec, Canada) - July 2007

This was my first touring trip in a group like this, and I can honestly say that it would be very difficult for another company to top the performance of ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND. The Winter Rimu provides an amazing opportunity to see the highlights of the south island during the fall/winter change of seasons.

Brian Prevo (California, USA) - May 2007

Truly the trip of a lifetime! We loved every minute and will cherish the memories forever. We were able to experience New Zealand in a way we would never be able to on our own. The whole family had an unforgettable time enjoying all of the fun and challenging activities and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Adam Lewandowski (Kentucky, USA) - April 2007

This trip was absolutely fantastic. I even went on another one after my first and am signing up again to do South America. They are a great company and you can feel secure going on a trip with them.

Ruth Mitchell (Texas, USA) - April 2007

I had been dreaming of New Zealand for a dozen years, but didn't quite know how to plan for everything I wanted to see. A friend took this trip two years prior and raved about it. As soon as she told me about it, I started planning! I waited in great anticipation for my trip of a lifetime and it exceeded all expectations. Thank you Active New Zealand!

Julie Kloiber (California, USA) - March 2007

Without overstating it, this was the trip of a lifetime. The topography of New Zealand's South Island was spectacular. Given the length of the trip, I feel that we experienced the full diversity of the landscape. The whole trip was like going to camp for adults. After a few days at home recharging, I'm ready to sign up for the next adventure.

Vera Hershenberg (New Jersey, USA) - February 2007

If you are interested in traveling to New Zealand you absolutely could not create on your own a better trip than ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND can provide for you. You will go to amazing places, see wondrous sights, be very "localized", and have the time of your life. The guides are a wealth of Kiwi information, helpful, fun and responsible, making your trip pleasant and safe. There is no other way to see New Zealand.

Nancy Owen (Colorado, USA) - December 2006

The Rimu trip was worth every penny spent. It was an amazing adventure, better than I could have imagined. The guides were awesome, the accommodations were superb, and the adventures are unforgettable!

Kathy DeKold (Florida, USA) - May 2007

I haven't had so much fun in years! Hiking in the bush, in the midst of fantastic scenery and landscape, reaching the mountain hut and then having dinner with your trip buddies singing songs and cracking jokes over a glass of NZ wine and then going outside to see the star-speckled sky and the moonlight reflecting off the snowy peaks of the nearby mountains is priceless!

Max Gliner (Essex, United Kingdom) - August 2007

I'm so glad I decided to see New Zealand this way. I expected a lot, and got more than I expected.

Catherine Erasmus (Victoria, Australia) - July 2007

We loved our trip! You have a beautiful country and we miss it already. I did many things I would have never dreamed I'd get to do, such as hiking a glacier, kayaking in a fiord and trekking through stunning New Zealand sites. We loved the flexibility of the activities, where you could do things at your own speed, sometimes ahead of the group, sometimes at the end of the group. Thanks for a great adventure!

Sofia Paine (New York, USA) - August 2007

World class fun!! Gorgeous scenery, great leaders, wonderful food and lodgings. Interacting with such great guests was a real trip. A life altering experience!!

Gary Baker (Oregon, USA) - November 2007

Ask yourself: Have I ever seen so many stars that I can barely make out the constellations? When was the last time that I challenged myself and felt accomplishment at being physically exhausted? The Rimu isn't for the faint of heart, but depending upon your background and experience, drive and determination; it definitely can be one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences of your life.

Nick Denney (Kentucky, USA) - Dec 2007

The Kea trip provides families a wonderful taste of the variety of New Zealand adventure. Best part about it is that the ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND guides take care of every logistical task, including every snack, giving mom and dad complete freedom to enjoy themselves. It's a pampering experience.

Sheryl McCoy (California, USA) - July 2007

The trip was absolutely amazing. Would I go back again? The answer to that is: Tomorrow!!!! Thank you to everyone who supported me in making my dream trip a reality. I hope that I brought back some of the genuine warmth of the Kiwi people, the sunshine of the clear blue skies, the clarity of the rivers and lakes and the strength of the many, many mountains to carry inside of me.

Karen Thibodeau (Maine, USA) - Jan 2008 Kauri &

We wanted a trip that was organized for us so that we could go along and enjoy the experience without any worries, and that's exactly what we got. We had a fantastic adventure and loved every minute of it. The drives took us through amazing scenery. Venturing off-the-beaten-track is a fantastic way to see the country - it allows you to de-stress from normal life and appreciate the incredible natural landscapes of NZ.

Shawn Bodmann & Paige Brazy - Dec 2008

Active New Zealand's brochure for this trip is very consistent with the actual experience. If anything, it understates the stunning landscape.

John Wix (Virginia, USA) - Jan 2009

The Rimu trip was one of the best trips of my life. It allowed us to see areas we would not have gone to on our own. We were able to hike, bike and kayak without the hassles of trying to arrange the equipment rentals and choose the routes. The guides helped us understand the culture and history of the places we went. I just can't praise the trip enough.

Shannon Jones (British Columbia) - Jan 2009

Active New Zealand have to be the best at what any of the guided trip organizations do - they are personal, thoughtful, and totally oriented to providing a top-notch experience for the adventure traveler. The guides are professional and excel at everything - from the physical performance the most athletic traveler could want, to preparing the best on-the-road meals. It doesn't get any better than this!

Ruth Plagenhoef (Virginia, USA) - Jan 2009

Bar none, this was the best holiday I've ever had. The guides were professional, funny, knowledgeable and bonded well with all of us. The variety of activities and venues was remarkable: the two weeks passed amazingly fast. Thanks for a trip of a lifetime!

James Mooney (Pennsylvania, USA) - Jan 2009

This trip was more energizing than spending a week spent on the beach. Surprisingly so, considering I was concerned about not being fit enough to take an active trip. The scenery and the outdoor activity are an unbeatable combination.

Cecily Hintzen (California, USA) - Jan 2009

For our 10th anniversary, we sought a unique vacation worthy of that milestone. From start to finish, ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND and our incredible guides Dan and Alice delivered an amazing experience that exceeded even these lofty demands.

Craig Hilsenbeck (Chicago, USA) - Feb 2009

For the ultimate relax and refresh, head to the South Island of New Zealand and let ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND show you around. You'll regain perspective about what's important; you'll be physically tired out but mentally buzzing with energy; you'll have a few good hearty laughs on the way, and you'll remember it for the rest of your life.

Cathy Otty (London, United Kingdom) - Feb 2009

It was a life changing experience. I would say it was the best vacation of my life. This trip took me half way around the world, but in the end it felt like a second home. I now have new friends from around the world and that is priceless.

Michael Mosher (Ohio, USA) - Feb 2009

This was an incredible and unforgettable experience from the moment I sent that first e-mail requesting a brochure to the moment I got home. The front office, the guides, the people I met, the breathtaking scenery, diverse landscape, amazing hikes, food, and accommodations -- the whole experience was phenomenal. I dream of returning one day soon. Thank you sooooo much for the trip of my lifetime.

Nancy Mann (Ontario, Canada) - Feb 2009

I brought my 60-year-old dad with me. It was challenging, as we knew it would be, but what a trip for a dad and daughter to be able to say they did together. Hiking, cycling, and kayaking in the South Island of New Zealand is something we will never forget, and have so many wonderful memories to share together.

Michele Scully (Virginia, USA) - Feb 2009

From my first contact to my last, ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND has exceeded all expectations. We had a terrific group of people and I haven't laughed so much in years - something I hadn't expected to do so much of on a hiking trip!

Catriona Hellicar (New South Wales, Australia) - Feb 2009

Although my wife and I have different strengths on the bike, we both had a wonderful holiday. When she decided to call it a day and hop on the bus, I could go on, which would be a problem on a self-guided tour. And to have someone who knows the island, literally every trail and every hill out there, and who will be there for you from early till late cannot be valued highly enough.

Markus Flade (Ratingen,,Germany) - Feb 2009

I can't believe how many things I did that I was scared to try, but I wound up doing them ALL, and I loved it!! All the time I was gently watched over and encouraged - I had a spectacular trip.

Sally Anderson (California, USA) - Feb 2009

I experienced more on this trip than I could have on my own in twice the time. Our trip was well run and the scenery was fantastic.

Vernon Martin (Maryland, USA) - Feb 2009

Save yourself time and money, skip Hawaii, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, Scotland, Montana, Wyoming and England - just come to the South Island. There is no substitute for genuine Kiwi adventure and enthusiasm, a nature lover's Nirvana. Hiking The Milford Track was a life long dream, I was bowled over. I have never been so spoiled on a long hike.

Irene Reiner (Georgia, USA) - March 2009

After two trips with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND, I don't think there's a better way to see the country. You've taken me to some magnificent places that I probably never would have found, led me on some amazing adventures that I might not have been courageous enough to try on my own, and left me with terrific memories!

Brooke McDermott (Connecticut, USA) - March 2009

We have traveled all over the world, and this was by far the best trip of our lives. We could never have put anything like this together on our own. Absolutely wonderful!

Jennifer & John Ridgley (Georgia, United States) - March 2009

I shouldn't have waited 4 years to book this trip! Thanks for the wonderful trip. The memories will last a lifetime.

Todd Gades (Minnesota, USA) - April 2009

Before we went, I wondered whether it was worth 20 hours of flying for a week on the Tui, but my concern melted away quickly. A great week chock-full of activities (hiking, rafting, biking, flying, even bungy jumping). The trip was challenging (for this 50-something dad), but completely safe, well supported, and as comfortable as could be expected. Well done!

Bob, Doug & Benjy Wachter (San Francisco, CA, USA) - Apr 2009

The ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND team provide an excellent way to see a stunning country, by getting into the heart of it. Living by the lakes, walking through the valleys and experiencing the country from the ground up. My camera could barely cope with the amazing country.

Emma Lawson (London, UK) - June 2009

Time is money. By spending 10 minutes booking a trip with ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND, I was able to create an active, hassle-free vacation that I would not have been able to do on my own.

Jonathan Kanovsky (New York, USA) - June 2009

The Winter Rimu was, truly, the trip of a lifetime. We saw New Zealand - not other tourists - and learned about all things Kiwi through our adventures. You can be extremely active or a little relaxed, as you wish. My husband and I, who are of different abilities, each had the best time. Your guides will make sure of it and will take very good care of you!

Melissa Kanovsky (New York, USA) - June 2009

I can't remember when I've had so much fun and relaxed so deeply in the same vacation. A beautiful balance of authentic activity amidst a variety of fascinating and stunning landscapes and mellow "take it all in" down time. New Zealand's South Island is magnificent and the Winter Rimu trip allows you to authentically experience its natural wonders and cultural vibe. This was a wonderful adventure!

Karen Brennan (Massachusetts, USA) - June 2009

I would say that it was a once in a lifetime trip, but it was so good that a person shouldn't only experience it once.

Mike Gibbons (New York, USA) - August 2009

The Winter Rimu was just a perfect balance of activity and scenery. Our guides had deep knowledge of everything New Zealand... Their total support, warmth and sense of humor, personal attention, organization, and enthusiasm plus great food, weather, and accommodations made this truly the trip of a lifetime for us. We are completely smitten by everything we experienced in this beautiful country. Thanks!!

Susan Jacobs (New York, USA) - September 2009

If you fancy seeing one of the world's most beautiful scenery in the company of like-minded travellers and guides who go over and above the call of duty to make your trip interesting, fun and of course safe -- then don't hesitate to book an Active NZ trip. The scenery is simply stunning, the walks nicely varied and the food delicious!

Kath Bailey (Marlow, United Kingdom) - October 2009

A truly amazing trip. I went from oooo, to wow, to awe inspired, to stunned silence (usually in the space of one day). I will never forget this trip!

Paul Mahan (London, England) - October 2009

New Zealand in itself is a must see, but if you want to get the best out of it, you have to discover it with the ACTIVE team. They will make you forget that you're on a tour. By the end of the journey they have become friends you will miss.

Yoann Viollet (Dhahran,Saudi Arabia) - November 2009

You helped me fall in love with your country!! Being able to see the country as it was meant to be seen... by experiencing nature first-hand through hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. It was awesome! If you want to improve your trips, can you provide an option to never leave?

Theresa Chang (California, United States) - November 2009

We saw New Zealand in a way only a local could show us. This was my first guided trip and I loved that Active New Zealand took care of so much for me so that I could focus on having fun. We never had to worry about food, hotels, or transportation and got great workouts hiking and biking in out-of-this world scenery.

Dustin Brown (Chicago, United States) - November 2009

The itinerary couldn't possibly do justice to the richness of the real experience. I feel we "lived" NZ instead of "seeing" it. We made new friends and had more fun than we thought possible.

Diana Willson (Durango, Colorado, United States) - November 2009

New Zealand is a must for anyone's bucket list! Active New Zealand is the way to do it. The attention to details, the amazing excursions, and the 5-star guides make this a trip of a lifetime.

Barbara Beck (Utah, United States) - November 2009

Life is full of tough choices, but this isn't one of them. Active New Zealand is both an exhilarating but also relaxing way to explore one of the most breathtaking places on the planet. It was one of, if not the very best trip we have ever taken! Just go!

Hilary & Edwin Jager (New York, USA) - December 2009

This was the trip that convinced me that travel is not an extra -- it's essential.

Clare Gibson (Petaluma, California, USA) - December 2009

Some people have a life list of birds. I have a life list of trips. I have taken many, many guided trips in the past and New Zealand with Active NZ is now tops on my list of great trips and great guides. The trip was funny and fun, challenging and relaxing, gorgeous and wonderful.

Sandra Eisemann (Madison, Wisconsin, USA) - January 2010

I have had my eyes opened to the outdoors. I had never kayaked, mountain biked or even overnight hiked before. So to be able to do all this in one trip in such a safe and supportive environment was amazing.

Kym Stockman (Happy Valley, South Australia) - February 2010

Too good to be true? That's what I thought and was proven wrong. The 5 day Kauri, as an independent traveller, felt like a 2-week break with old friends. I saw and did more then I could ever have imagined possible in such a short space of time and yet reached the end of the week feeling very relaxed!

Kelly Blemings (Wokingham, United Kingdom) - March 2010

A stunning trip to stretch your cycling legs in fantastic scenery.

Ruth Campbell (Eaglesham, Glasgow, United Kingdom) - April 2010

This trip was the best adventure I have ever had. Every day was enjoyable, we could hardly wipe the smiles off our faces. This trip has changed us for the better. I don't thing we will see things quite the same.

Jennifer Croxford (Kentucky, USA) - Oct 2 2005

Active South America was not like any other tour group we encountered. We did not hop on and off of buses all day, or wait in line to stand around a guide. We were hiking, biking and kayaking throughout the trip. While other groups were all complaining, we were all having a blast! This is not your typical tour company!

Michael Pasoff (Quebec, Canada) - March 19 2006

How do I comment on my recent trip with Active South America exploring Cuzco, the Inca Trail and Macchu Picchu? It was ONLY the most exciting trip that I have taken yet! The hiking and biking was incredible! Breathtaking scenery. Amazing landscape and beautiful people. My group was great. My advice to anyone who is entertaining the idea of a trip with Active SA: Just do it!

Karen Kirk (Pennsylvania, USA) - Mar 19 2006

I loved the Iguana trip... an itinerary that featured seven provinces, several volcanoes, one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, a cloud forest, a rain forest, and a dry forest, and both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. By the way, Costa Rica has *the best* pineapple and mangoes in the world! Active South America remains true to their mission of providing well-organized, outdoor-oriented, adventures.

Whitney Olsen (Oregon, USA) - Mar 12 2006

My favourite parts? The private beach on San Cristobal, kayaking and swimming with sea lions, Sierra Negra volcano, Shark Alley - way cool. Wonderful experience - the scenery, the animals, the nature, and the culture: WOW! Nice, small, intimate adventure.

Kelly Findley (Wisconsin, USA) - Feb 5 2006

It was an epic trip and thanks again for our Excellent Adventure!

Vernon Brewer (Idaho, USA) - Dec 2005

It is difficult even now to find the words to describe the Peru experience. This was a childhood dream of mine, so I had rather high expectations. To have them surpassed so completely in every regard is no mean feat... It was, quite simply, the most breathtaking adventure I have ever experienced, a succession of incandescent moments that ultimately overwhelmed the senses and left me in a kind of otherworldly awe.

Steve Lasch (North Carolina, USA) - Apr 2006

A trip of a lifetime! Definitely thumbs up - already recommending ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA to others and will hope to join you for a another trip shortly.

Julian Burrows (United Kingdom) - April 8, 2006

I came to find the real Peru. Within hours, I discovered that the real Peru had found me. Enchanted me with its people, its colors, its music, its laughter. Lured me down (and up, up up) ancient paths that made a mockery of all the photos I had ever seen. Filled my ears with tales of its triumphs and tragedies. And left me with the feeling that my own inner landscape had been permanently changed.

Steve Lasch (North Carolina, USA) - April 2006

How do I comment on my recent trip with Active South America? It was ONLY the most exciting trip that I have taken yet! The hiking and biking was incredible! Amazing landscape and beautiful people. And how about those stars?? All have made my trip one that I will not forget. My advice to anyone who is entertaining the idea of a trip with Active SA: Just do it!

Karen Kirk (Pennsylvania, USA) - March 2006

Totally exceeded my expectations. The scenery takes your breath away while the archeological sites and history are very interesting, and the food is absolutely great. Moreover, all the people I met through the whole trip were wonderful. They have made my trip very meaningful.

Yoko Kaji (Tokyo, Japan) - April 2006

Most tour companies isolate you from the country that you are visiting. Active South America makes you feel at home right in the middle of it.

Ravi Rajagopalan (California, USA) - Oct 2005

Awesome trip! A great mix of challenging hiking, beautiful scenery and fascinating ruins.

Martin Bick, (Pennsylvania, USA) - Aug 2006

WOW! This will be the wedding anniversary we'll remember forever! We had so much fun and accomplished some great feats while seeing such beautiful scenery. It'll be hard to think of something as exciting for our 40th anniversary!

Alan and Char Bouts (New Mexico, USA) - July 2006

The Tucan was just what we were looking for. The daily activities were interesting, informative and challenging - everything from volcano peaks to rainforest valleys. The guides are first-rate. Everything was taken care of. Would do it again. Would also recommend it.

Kent Fattore (Maryland, USA) - August 2006

As a group, we all felt so pleased with the trip. It was perfect! I can't remember the last time I felt so relaxed. The food was excellent. Peru has it all: mountains, beaches, jungles, culture, history, and more.

Maria Falgoust (New York, USA) - August 2006

I loved my trip with Active South America. I will never forget the experience- even if I hadn't taken four hundred pictures. I was very impressed with the desire of each person to make sure I was having a good experience and that my needs were met. I was on an adventure yet felt completely pampered and cared for.

Diane Withrow (North Carolina, USA) - August 2006

The trip was great. The view from Sierra Negra was spectacular, and swimming with the sealions was amazing. I never thought I'd come face to face with a sealion. The activities were well spaced out - there were days when we were on the go quite a bit and other days that were more relaxing. I enjoyed being able to stay on the islands and see the towns and people living there.

Denise Clozza (British Columbia, Canada) - August 2006

If you are looking for a unique trip full of adventure, Active South America is for you! No tour buses or typical tourist activities. Everything was planned out so all we had to do was wake up for our daily call and pack our bag for the day. Our guide was knowledgeable, flexible, and passionate about the outdoors. Our trip to Peru was an amazing adventure that we will never forget!

Cara Nicolini (New Jersey, USA) - Aug 2006

Simply a trip of a lifetime. The professional and charismatic guides made the trip even more mystical.

Julio Barrera (California, USA) - Aug 2006

The Incan ruins, the beautiful scenery, the clouds in the mountains changing constantly. But above all, the people in Peru were so friendly and congenial. I did not expect that. I have been talking about little else since I returned. Hope I don't bore people now. Thank you for a truly marvelous vacation.

Paul Edwards (California, USA) - Aug 2006

I highly recommend ACTIVE vacations for those who have a week or two of vacation and desire a moderately challenging adventure with a GREAT deal of variety of activities. Our JAGUAR trip met this requirement in an exceptional fashion. The pace was steady but not overbearing, and there was excellent time management between activities and relaxation. Great job you guys.

Kevin Peterson (Ontario, Canada) - Sep 2006

You succeeded with flying colors! Everything that you portrayed is what we experienced. I am absolutely thrilled with our trip. From swimming with sharks to hiking up an active volcano and everything in between, we did it.

Peter Krull (Georgia, USA) - Sep 2006

I've always dreamed of seeing the Galapagos. Being able to combine my dream with a fun, active vacation was invigorating in both body and mind. The landscapes, the seascapes, the wildlife, the education, the adventure, the people.....I will be buzzing for weeks.

Melissa Booth (Georgia, USA) - Sep 2006

The Tortuga trip met all of my expectations. I can't wait to return. After speaking to people on other Galapagos trips I feel spoiled by the diversity of this trip. It was so much more interactive and fun with the outdoor orientation. I was really satisfied with the entire trip. I will definitely recommend your company to others.

Lindsay Kalan (Alberta, Canada) - Sep 2006

My travels with Active South America greatly exceeded my expectations. Not only did I travel with professional and knowledgeable guides, but also with genuine and caring friends. Thanks for an awesome experience in Peru!

Donna Robinson (Colorado, USA) - Oct 2006

If you want a challenging and rewarding vacation, then tour with this company. If you want to enjoy the scenery, culture, food, and people without the stress of planning everything... tour with this company. If you want the most for your time and money, you want to tour with this company. They are bound to exceed your expectations!

April Ducote (Virginia, USA) - Oct 2006

The two weeks passed very quickly and the itinerary was beyond words that would do it justice. The Jaguar is an outstanding opportunity for everyone young and old to immerse themselves in a cultural experience that is full of daily surprises and breathtaking scenery. The adventure can only be described as "awesome".

Art Courtman (Massachusetts, USA) - Oct 2006

The Jaguar was an awesome, life changing event for me. I went on a challenging journey everyday. I will be talking about completing the Inca Trail and seeing Machu Picchu for the rest of my life.

Normand La Chance (New York, USA) - Nov 2006

We think Active SA is the perfect trip for people like us who love to do and see as much as we can and leave the logistics to you!!!

Paul & Ed Cassot (New York, USA) - Nov 2006

This trip was a blast. I'm looking forward to my next Active trip. A great company, great trip, and tons of great memories.

Nate "Troy" Russell (Alabama, USA) - Dec 2006

Trip itinerary was just what I was looking for. My entire experience was outstanding - I really enjoyed the trip, my travel companions and the local people.

Barbara Imperiali (Massachusetts, USA) - Dec 2006

I was very nervous about this trip. I didn't really want to go at first - but I did and had the best time ever! Everything is put together so nicely and the tour guides are amazing! This trip opened my eyes and I would go again in a heart beat! Active South America is a wonderful company! I loved this trip!

Priscilla Douglas (California, USA) - Dec 2006

I got to cycle though rural Andean villages, hike up mountains and through the jungle, see Amazon wildlife from a dugout canoe and island coastlines from a kayak, and just when I was adventured out, there was a free-day in Cusco to soak up the culture at my own pace. This was exactly the trip I was looking for

Alise Mattar (Arizona, USA) - Dec 2006

Paddling, hiking, biking, wow... this trip was worth every tired muscle. Peru is spectacular. My only regret is that I didn't stay longer.

Donna Dinniwell (Ontario, Canada) - Dec 2006

As a first-timer with ACTIVE SA, I could not be more impressed. All the services you offered - from your website and online booking to the great guides and the food/hotel choices - helped make our trip an exceptional experience. ACTIVE manages to take all the worry and complications out so that we could get the most out of our adventure!

Christopher Perez and Brian Crowell (California, USA) - Dec 2006

We were blown away by an absolutely amazing trip in the Galapagos! The tour was fantastic - incredibly well organised and so well run, full of exciting and fun activities, quality gear, great places to stay, wonderful meals and a really fun group of people!

Jane Puddephat (Auckland, NZ) - Dec 2006

The trip was wonderful...well-organized, proceeded like clockwork, and Cynthia was very attentive to our needs. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

Maureen McLaughlin (New Jersey, USA) - Dec 2006

I took a chance on a "guided tour" and I am thrilled I did! I have never taken more than seven days off from work so being away for 16 days was a huge commitment. Active South America kept me so busy and jazzed that I even forgot what date it was and what I might be missing back at the office. Since returning, I had one compliment worth quoting: "I am not sure what you are doing, but keep doing it, you look great!."

Lisa Labonville (New York, USA) - Jan 2007

Active South America exceeded my expectations. Everything was planned out to perfection. All you could do was relax and take in what the country offered you.

Graham Pratt (Colorado, USA) - Jan 2007

Service was good before the trip. Everything was well arranged. Guides were very involved, well trained and caring. This was a wonderful trip with a good balance of challenge, excitement and learning opportunities.

Mary Bauer (Ohio, USA) - April 2007

Everything ran incredibly smoothly and efficiently and every attention to detail was taken to make it a fabulous memory making trip for me and my two young sons. Loved the action packed aspect of it and the amount that we squeezed into a short period of time!

Jandy Sprouse (Michigan, USA) - April 2007

I loved all of the time on the boat, on the beach and in the water. For the traveler who wants to experience the Galapagos - and have the freedom that comes with land-based accommodations - this, and only this, is it.

Karen Schwartzman (Massachusetts, USA) - March 2007

The Condor trip gave us such wonderful views of Chile - natural, cultural, and gastronomical. I would highly recommend it to anyone who was in good shape and wanted to see things that only a hard workout can provide.

Drew Huang (California, USA) - Feb 2007

The best trip of my life. I can't say enough about the dedication and enthusiasm of the ACTIVE staff and trip leader. You guys obviously care about what you do in giving the traveler the best possible experience. So glad we booked with ACTIVE! Thanks for everything. I will recommend you to all!

Kathy Thompson (Virginia, USA) - April 2007

Incredible scenery, awesome guides, and great food! Your administration is top notch. Your guides are great. The organization and coordination of the trip was well done. The views were incredible. This was what I expected and wanted from this trip.

Eric Cobb (Maine, USA) - April 2007

I couldn't be any more pleased with Active South America. The fun, the challenge, the opportunity to try new activities, the exposure to cultures and foods and lifestyles......wow!!!!

Larry Edwards (Colorado, USA) - Feb 2007

Becoming part of the community by learning about their weaving, farming, way of life was so powerful I would recommend the Lares trail to anyone. You become part of the community not just on a quest to conquer the hike, rather truly learn and experience the Peru way.

Cindy Stuckey (New York, USA) - April 2007

Our Tortuga trip was absolutely fantastic! I can't imagine a better way to experience the Galapagos Islands. Tim did a great job of finding amazing things to look at - turtles, sharks, zillions of fish. I never thought that as a non-diver that I'd be able to see the things I did on this trip.

Catriona McDonald (Quebec, Canada) - April 2007

This was definitely the trip of a lifetime. The Inca Trail was the best of times and the worst of times...but the result at the end made every step worthwhile. I recommend it to EVERYONE.I think that you appreciate things more (especially Macchu Pichu) when you challenge yourself to arrive there.

Sian McAlpin (Massachusetts, USA) - April 2007

The organisation, the itinerary, the leader and the entire trip was amazing. An experience of a lifetime that I will never forget. The creatures you see, the people you meet, the fresh air that you breathe were all unbeatable. It's a trip that I'm definitely not going to forget.

Lina Tchung (California, USA) - April 2007

My ASA trip was amazing. The activities exceeded my expectations and I feel like I was exposed to a side of Peru that most tourists do not get to see. I've taken other guided trips and ASA was far superior. Thank you for an amazing trip!

Emily Loraas (California, USA) - April 2007

This was my first guided trip and I was very impressed. I think this type of tour tends to attract fun, independent, fit people and our group size was perfect for getting to know everyone. We not only gained a new perspective on Peru, but also went home with new friends.

Laurie Rubie (California, USA) - June 2007

This is a great way to see a different place and to appreciate the culture. We were a bit anxious about going to Peru, not speaking Spanish, but we had no problems. My trip was great and I wouldn't change a thing. I will travel with you all again.

Mike Elnicki (Pennsylvania, USA) - June 2007

The Peru Jaguar trip was a near perfect mix of adventures, sights, challenges and settings. It would be hard to imagine packing in more diversity in just 14 days.

Chris Noble (Ohio, USA) - June 2007

Peru is a beautiful country and the different activities on the trip made it possible to see it all. I'll never forget the sky at night (Southern Cross, Milky Way), sunset on Amantani Island, and hiking the Inca trail. It was just amazing.

Ruby Kaur (New York, USA) - June 2007

This was truly the trip of a lifetime! Although some of the activities were challenging, people of a variety of fitness levels could complete them. I particularly enjoyed the variety - from the jungles to the ruins, to the mountains and cities. We experienced so much more than in a "typical" tour, by getting out and into the countryside.

Andrew Bartlow (California, USA) - May 2007

The entire two weeks was awe-inspiring, physically challenging and spiritually rewarding. If you let it, this experience just may shake up your perceptions of yourself and the world around you.

Patrick McAleney (North Carolina, USA) - July 2007

ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA provided me with one of the most awesome trips I've ever been on. Everything was thought of and taken care of to ensure the trip totally lived up to my expectations. I wouldn't hesitate in booking another trip. Thank you so much, absolutely brilliant!

Julian Oakes (United Kingdom) - August 2007

Sometimes words can't describe the emotions one feels in partaking in such an amazing, life changing experience. ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA rocks!

Mattey Tibbetts (California, USA) - August 2007

Active South America's Jaguar trip in Peru is outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the culture and history of Peru from our knowledgeable guides as we hiked, biked, and kayaked. What a great two weeks!

Judith MacNab (Wisconsin, USA) - August 2007

Active South America remains true to its name. If you are looking for a jam-packed adventure of a lifetime, then Active is just for you!

Amanda Borja (New York, USA) - August 2007

Active South America's Jaguar trip is outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the culture and history of Peru from our knowledgeable guides as we hiked, biked and kayaked. What a great two weeks!

Jerry and Judith MacNab (Wisconsin, USA) - August 2007

An incredible trip, with a really great guide. All I can say is that you have to experience the Galapagos and Active South America is the way to do it.

Steve Kremer (Virginia, USA) - September 2007

As well as having a great time, being personally challenged by the activities and learning a great deal about Peruvian history, culture and the environment; I came home with a renewed appreciation of my own life: including my family, friends, home and work.

Ellie Bush (California, USA) - September 2007

My friend Jaana and I had just about the absolute best time ever on the Jaguar trip to Peru. We really didn't want it to end. The perfect combination of camping, hotels, local, city, countryside, jungle, OOHHH the Andes! We saw it all, did it all - hiking, biking, canoing, kayaking, eating, the guide was a blast, and the Peruvian people were wonderful. You have to go to experience the trip of a lifetime!!

Peggy Mendes-Stern (Ohio, USA) - September 2007

The Galapagos was a real treat. The scope of the tour was complete and it was very active. You'll come home happy, well-exercised, and with lots of memories.

Dan Hart (California, USA) - September 2007

This is the best trip ever. I have been all over the world and this one has to be the number one on the list.

Anton Hagens (Georgia, USA) - December 2007

You can choose to 'see' a country from the inside of a tour bus, stopping to disembark at the tourist hot spots to take the requisite photo, or you can see it the 'ACTIVE' way, hiking an hour to a turtle preservation project in a remote part of the country, or white water rafting 20 miles down the 5th Best White Water Rafting river in the world. Believe me, the ACTIVE way is much more exciting!

Indeg Raimundo (Connecticut, USA) - December 2007

We've just gotten back from our Tortuga trip and I wanted to quickly thank you for everything that made it an incredible and profoundly moving experience! This trip was fantastic and much much more than either myself or my son expected! We're both still overwhelmed! The nature and wildlife and particularly Tim's leadership made the experience far more than any 'holiday' we've ever had!

Bob Wigetman (Belgium) - March 2008

This trip was so exciting. We saw the diversity of Peru, and the beauty of the land and the people was superb. We were active every day seeing something new and having time to enjoy it. Now we are enjoying it all again through all our pictures. We also made some very good friends.

Margaret Boman (Texas, USA) - Apr 2008

Active South America exceeded every expectation I had. I felt safe and had such a great time and felt like everything was well thought out and planned. We were kept active but not exhausted. The variety of activities kept it interesting and the different areas of Peru that we experienced were amazing. The lodgings were perfect, and food was plentiful and delicious.

Darlene Deschambeault (Massachusetts, USA) - Dec 2007

We became very excited about the trip when we first heard about it. The excitement built for each month until the departure for Peru. As the tour started it became better and better each day until we saw Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate. Our small group became old friends and Arturo, our guide became family. This was a tour of a life time. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT TIME IN PERU!!!!!

Tord Boman (Texas, USA) - May 2008

I thought everything about Active South America was great! You do a tremendous job. My hats off to you all for a wonderful organization.I am so excited about the trip, the activities, the people we met, the beautiful scenery. I would love to go back.

Paula Sothoron (Maryland, USA) - June 2008

Thanks for an AMAZING trip!!!! This trip gave us memories that will last a lifetime and a sense of excitement that will carry us many years into the future! This was a fabulous trip for an active family with teens. We had a great time and an awesome guide!

Debby Fleischman (Ohio, USA) - June 2008

This trip exceeded all of my expectations. It was my first guided trip and I plan to book future trips with Active. I loved that Active truly lived up to their name. I was so involved in all that we were doing that I forgot all of my worries back home. I was impressed by everything! This was the trip of a lifetime!

Sarah O'Neil (Arizona, USA) - June 2008

We've had the pleasure of traveling to many places around the world... beautiful and exotic vacations. For our first experience with a group we just couldn't have been more delighted. Have told many people that this may have been our best adventure ever! Thanks very much!

Sandra Fields (New Mexico, USA) - June 2008

Active presented me with a great, well organized, fun trip. I plan to travel again with Active to other destinations. Well delivered, well executed, lots of fun and very active.

Tom Waller (British Columbia, Canada) - June 2008

This was my fourth Active Trip and my favorite so far. For a trip of a lifetime, I would encourage everyone to consider the Tortuga trip. You will be taken places that you never dreamed of and if lucky, find paradise along the way. You will be amazed at the quality and quantity of animals, birds, fish and amphibians that you will see up close and found in no other place in the world.

Maureen Lienau (Colorado, USA) - May 2008

I learned so much more then I ever expected to and it was so much more fun then I could have hoped for! This was the most interesting, fun and exciting trip that I have ever been on! I am so glad that I chose to go with Active South America for my vacation! It was more then worth it!

Lindsey Moroski (Pennsylvania, USA) - June 2008

Active South America is a unique company that really works hard to create exciting, adventurous, well rounded family trips. You will see everything you want and not worry about one detail and yet it will seem like you are with friends and not guides. You do daring things, and feel like they really enjoy your company and that they are having fun too.

Jenny Hartshorne (New Jersey, USA) - Aug 2008

The planning and organisation that obviously goes into an Active trip really makes for a very special holiday. They've thought of pretty much everything and there are enough options for you to do as much or as little as you want/can in terms of the activities. In keeping with the company philosophy, travel time was kept to a minimum. I thoroughly recommend this fab little company.

Dawn Williams (Germany) - Jul 2008

Our trip to the Galapagos was filled with surprises at each turn. Activities were great, the adrenaline of seeing all the animal life was amazing. My expectations were exceeded every day, and we were just stunned at how much we actually got to see and do in this lovely place!

Michael Pasoff (Quebec, Canada) - Aug 2008

As someone who has had five years working for one of your competitors, I must say, the trip was fantastic and I was completely satisfied. Well done indeed.

Krista Sahrbeck (Colorado, USA) - Aug 2008

It was a wonderful trip... all the wildlife we saw were just unbelievable... our tour group saw whales breaching and schools of dolphins playing by our boat... and not just once... TWICE!!!

Jenny Lam & Kiyoshi McGinnis (California, USA) - Aug 2008

Active South America's Jaguar trip is a tour that will challenge you, make you work, and in the end provide you with an unforgettable experience that you will cherish forever. It's a trip I will not soon forget. Keep up the good work!

Ryan Ritz (Colorado, USA) - Aug 2008

WARNING: Travel with Active South America is NOT just a holiday, it's life changing! You explore the wonders of a new country while discovering new strengths in yourself. It's a very rewarding experience and one I would recommend to anyone.

Maryanne Sheth (United Kingdom) - Aug 2008

Active South America is a very professional company. But along with their professionalism comes a knowledge and passion for the country and a true desire to do the best job possible to make the experience perfect for each client.

Sue Wood (Alberta, Canada) - Oct 2008

Couldn't have done a better job...but I already knew that going in...ACTIVE's trips always give me a whole new perspective on my life, recharges my mind and gives me great experiences of a lifetime.

Stacy Rothenberg (Colorado, USA) - Nov 2008

I can't overemphasize how great ALL of our guides were. You have done an excellent job recruiting the best folks!

Ken Poor (Atlanta, USA) - Dec 2008

We loved our Condor trip to Patagonia and the Lake District of Chile. Our group of 20 friends went away quite pleased with the challenges of the hikes, the efficiency of the organization (we were a big group to move around) and the lovely leadership of our guides. Thanks for another memorable ACTIVE vacation.

Cathy Woolard (Georgia, USA) - Dec 2008

Just like they advertise, you don't need to be a tri-athelete to enjoy this trip. But if you are, you won't be bored! Physically and mentally challenging and stimulating! Thanks Active!

Brad Wilkinson (Georgia, USA) - Dec 2008

Overall ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA was a great trip and I would be willing to recommend it to anyone capable of a vigorous itinerary. For the money, it was the best deal that we found for what we wanted to do.

Sheryl Thomson (Texas, USA) - Dec 2008

What were your favorite parts of your trip? I am sorry this is just too hard to say! I enjoyed every second of it!!!! If I had to pick, it would be the scuba diving and the volcano hike!

Jag McKee (Maryland, USA) - Dec 2008

ACTIVE trips are not for everyone but for those who love to take in as much as possible of a country in a short time, they fit the bill. You will never be bored on an ACTIVE trip and the people who are attracted to this kind of trip are people you'll want to stay in touch with for a long, long time.

Bo & Edie Lycke (Texas, USA) - Dec 2008

With no other guided trips in the past, ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA set the bar high for any future guided trips.

Michael & Sathya Wandzek (Colorado, USA) - July 2008

My first guided trip. Everyone was very knowledgeable - I learned a lot and all while having a blast too! I definitely came home full of energy. Ending the trip in the jungle was perfect because it was still super exciting but more restful than earlier parts of the trip.

Corey O'Brien (Washington DC, USA) - Jan 2009

The trip was well organized, fun and active. The activities were wonderful and the sights were beautiful. The people you meet are wonderful and you will make life long friendships.

Caroline Bennett (Ontario, Canada) - Jan 2009

I really liked the trip and the group. I never again ate as good as in my trip with you. Everything lived up to my expectations. You have very good and detailed itineraries and it is easy to get in contact with you - I felt that I had a personal contact and not only being a part of a group.

Pernille Hanegard (Charlottenlund, Denmark) - Mar 2009

I'd recommend ASA to anyone who wants to take the path less traveled. The "W" (trek) was just strenuous enough to let you know you weren't just slack-packing. An amazing trip through a part of the globe that earns the title "the end of the world". If you want to hike, bike and kayak in mountains, trails, lakes, fiords and glaciers that will take your breath away, this trip is the one for you.

Jack Richardson (Florida, USA) - Feb 2009

The ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip I took in 2006 was great! I trusted that this one would be as good and it was! There are some better things about NZ and likewise with Costa Rica. My favorite parts were whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, beaches on the Pacific coast, hiking through the beautiful forests and ziplining at Selvetura. I am and will continue to spread the word. Pura Vida!

Rick Burton (Wisconsin, USA) - Feb 2009

We had a wonderful time and definitely felt challenged! My favorite part was meeting the wonderful Costa Rican people, they were very kind, hospitable and warm people! I also enjoyed the zip line tour and the hikes. The food prepared by the families at the Sunset Hotel and at Coyote Beach were fantastic!! Meeting the high school kids learning English was another highlight of our trip!

Dan Tolar (Florida, USA) - Feb 2009

We usually go on hiking trips; this was our first "multi-sport," and it was great (even when the activity was difficult). The expertise and care of our guide (Andres) probably exceeded what we have experienced in more "upscale" trips. This is not a four star hotel trip and we didn't expect that. It is a trip where you really get to know Costa Ricans like Carlos at Coyote Beach and see things off the beaten path.

Donna Mitchell (Florida, USA) - Feb 2009

Fantastic, we were a bit nervous about using a guided tour but we really enjoyed ourselves. I feel that we were able to see so much more, not having to worry about lodging and transportation. The bike ride from Banos was unexpectedly my favorite part, I'm not a huge bicycle lover but the chance to bike through the mountains was great. Thanks for putting together such a great tour.

Heather Kuta (Massachusetts, USA) - Mar 2009

We have not taken tours before. This one was perfect. Truly. ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA is the way to conquer the Inca Trail and experience the countryside surrounding Cusco, the city of Kings!

Shaun Pennington (St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands) - Mar 2009

The Capybara was a vacation to beat all other vacations. When traveling with small children there can be so many worries, I had none, I knew (our guide) Sally would take great care of us. She was fantastic with the boys and so were the other guides throughout. Parents and boys learned so much about the Peruvian culture and history of the Incas. We are amazed at all the things we saw in the short period of time.

Lesley Stopay (Ontario, Canada) - Mar 2009

Overall, the trip was very well organized but also very flexible. This is critical when you have small children. There was no comparison between ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA and other trips we have taken. We wish they all could have been as impressive. This trip will change the way you look at life! You will not find a better company, guides, food and activities anywhere else.

Jonathan Stopay (Ontario, Canada) - Mar 2009

Staying on the islands instead of on a boat allowed us to interact more with the locals as well as explore more of the islands. I have already recommended your Galapagos trip to friends and family. Excellent value, variety of experiences, knowledgeable staff and guide.

Sue Dejneka (New Jersey, USA) - Mar 2009

An incredible experience. Living in NYC, I am not an outdoors adventurer so I did what I could as far as the activities, but I never felt pressured. I loved staying on the islands -- I felt we experienced more of the Galapagos this way. The only thing that equaled the beauty, peacefulness and playfulness of the islands was the camaraderie of the group. We had the best time together led by a wonderful guide.

Janice Goldhaar (New York, USA) - Mar 2009

I LOVED how active the trip was. It was exactly what I wanted. I don't want to relax on vacation, I want to wear myself out experiencing the world. I got that! My overall favorite part about the trip was truly getting to see, experience, taste, and feel Peru, its people, its culture, its history, and its kindness.

Julia Lemmon (Virginia, USA) - Mar 2009

This was the first 'guided' trip I've taken and the last thing I wanted was to feel like I was being herded on and off a tour bus. Instead we really felt like we were a part of the culture and the country. The fact that the trip was guided really enhanced the trip by allowing us to understand so much more about the country and its people than we would have if we'd been on our own, relying on the Lonely Planet.

Gemma Dickinson (Windlesham, United Kingdom) - Apr 2009

If you are considering going to the Galapagos Islands, there is no other tour company to even consider. ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA will provide the best experience one can possibly have.

Chris DiMaio (New York,New York,United States) - Mar 2009

ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA seems to be an incredibly organized and seasoned organization. Things appeared to happen so smoothly, which means that people were working very hard behind the scenes organizing everything.

Julia Lemmon (Charllotesville,Virginia,United States) - Mar 2009

I believe I got to experience the Peru that not many tourists get to experience - living, traveling, eating, talking, and laughing with the people of the highlands, jungle, city, and coast. All of this while traveling through the country on foot, bike, kayak, train, car, plane, and boat! What a truly incredible experience.

Julia Lemmon (Charllotesville,Virginia,United States) - Mar 2009

My experience with ACTIVE from our previous Ecuador trip showed me the attention you pay to details of the trip and the focus on off-the-beaten-path destinations. In these areas, you are still the best compared to other guided trips.

Sue Manuel (Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,United States) - Mar 2009

The Jaguar trip was an incredible adventure! While challenging at times, hiking the Inca Trail was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I felt like I truly tasted the cultural flavor of Peru, along with seeing the spectacular countryside! I can't wait to see another part of the world with ACTIVE!

Darcy Mosley (Birmingham,Alabama,United States) - May 2009

Absolutely awesome trip for those who like to be active and experience the local culture & flavours.

Prue King (Cremorne,New South Wales,Australia) - May 2009

We are very active grandparents who did not want to sit around on a cruise ship discussing miscellaneous ailments with our cronies; so we chose ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA. Perfect fit. We hiked, biked and kayaked all through the Galapagos. You can see the Galapagos "critters" with any group, but with ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA I felt that we also got to know the islands and their people too!

Pam Winsten (Tucson,Arizona,United States) - May 2009

It is clear that ACTIVE takes care to hire the best guides to ensure the best experience possible. I loved learning about the culture while experiencing the wonderful things Costa Rica has to offer. Anyone that passes up this opportunity is missing a life-changing adventure, and I give my highest praises to Andres and ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA!

Michaiah Parker (Richmond,Virginia,United States) - Jun 2009

I'm very impressed with ACTIVE, it's the first guided trip I've taken, but I'm sure it's the best. I enjoyed the balance of extreme activities and plenty of free time to relax. My favorites parts were zip-lining through the rain forest and kayaking to the island for a relaxing swim and day at the beach.

Kyle Alford (Richmond,Virginia,United States) - Jun 2009

ACTIVE is a first-class organization. From the booking process to the final good-byes, no detail is overlooked. The breadth and depth of Sally's organizational skills, knowledge of Peru's geology, geography, culture and history, as well as her superior interpersonal skills, made this trip incomparable.

Julie McLaughlin (Skillman,New Jersey,United States) - Jul 2009

My overall impression of ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA is that it is a highly professional, knowledgeable organization that knows how to organize and execute a phenomenal trip.

Dave Hilder (Arnold,Maryland,United States) - Jul 2009

When the vast majority of my friends talk about their vacations, it is always the same boring place doing the same boring thing - nothing. A vacation like that has no appeal to me and, until I found ACTIVE, I didn't know any vacation could. ACTIVE gets me to far-flung places to spend action-packed days doing AWESOME things.

Sean Halligan (Concord,California,United States) - Jul 2009

You are the best - and I have been telling people that. Everything (that you had control of) had been organized perfectly and we got lots of information.

Candace Beckwith (Coronado,California,United States) - Jul 2009

We had a wonderful vacation with ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA. Everything was very organized so there were no worries on our end. There were no hidden costs or changes to our plans. We had a blast getting to know the people in our group and have made friends we will continue to keep in touch with and hope to see again sometime. Our guide Yohn was fantastic. Thank you so much for an awesome vacation!

Barb Wilson (Cayman Islands) - Jul 2009

My trip to Peru with ACTIVE was amazing. If you are looking for an adventure, you've come to the right place. If everybody in the world did a trip like this, the world would be a much wiser, and cooler, place!

Adam Gall (San Francisco, California, United States) - Jul 2009

You were on the go most of the time - it is after all an ACTIVE trip and not a spectator one. You are involved in the action so be prepared to expend energy along the way. The trip was very well organized. The food was more than just adequate. On the Inca Trail I ate like I was going to a restaurant - my compliments to the chef. The views were spectacular on the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the Amazon.

Pat Corr (San Diego,California,United States) - Jul 2009

The trip is so well planned and organized that all you have to do is enjoy the awesome scenery of the Andes, the friendliness of the people around you, and the amazing culture of the Peruvian communities. You've got to do this trip!!

Terry Allinger (San Diego,California,United States) - Jul 2009

I had the experience of a life time and the activities were fun and challenging, but it still felt like a stress-free vacation.

Emily Meyers (Baltimore,Maryland,United States) - Jul 2009

From the excellent support staff in head office, to the experienced guides that go above and beyond, to the well-thought-out itinerary and plan, it all contributed to me having one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. An excellent company!

Rob Roy (New York,New York,United States) - Jul 2009

It was exactly as advertised -- adventure, definitely challenging, exposure to the real Peru.

Val Quartararo (Astoria,New York,United States) - Jul 2009

The favorite part for the kids was seeing the animals, especially the wild tortoises, and sea lions and birds too. I was surprised to find that the snorkeling was my favorite part because we saw sharks, turtles, etc.

Lesley Caslin (Hamilton, Bermuda) - Jul 2009

When I first saw the prices for these trips, I was a little hesitant. However, the lure was there and I jumped right in, only to realize how incredibly satisfying it was. One thing's for sure, I won't be thinking about the costs the next time I take an ACTIVE trip - it was certainly worth it and a lifetime experience!!

Vaidy Parameshwaran (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) - Aug 2009

Our guides were extremely knowledgeable of the history, politics and local sights. They were professional and personable.

Ruth Lauf (Edmonton,Alberta,Canada) - Aug 2009

With our experienced guide's help, we saw astounding sights and enjoyed effortless travel to a breathtaking variety of cultural and natural wonders. The small group is a great way to travel with kids.

Terry Le Page (Irvine,California,United States) - Aug 2009

This was a magical adventure - the perfect time away from home to a very different culture, to experience wildlife, flora and the people. The tour guide was the best and the naturalist really knew his stuff. Fascinating, fun, challenging, and relaxing, all rolled into one.

Ellie Kahn (Van Nuys,California,United States) - Aug 2009

ACTIVE put together an amazing trip to Peru. The scenery was fantastic, the culture & history is fascinating, and ACTIVE will be sure you make the most of your vacation. If you'd like to get outdoors and experience the country first-hand rather than from a bus, this trip is for you!

Nick Gallus (Minneapolis,Minnesota,United States) - Aug 2009

Our ACTIVE trip to Peru was one of the most memorable trips I have taken. It challenged me physically, but it was worth it - the amazing scenery, the Peruvian people, the friendships we made and our awesome trip leader, Sally!

Lisa Matuszny (Rocky River,Ohio,United States) - Aug 2009

Excellent trip! We were a little scared of taking a guided trip with a group because we heard that those sometimes restrict one's experiences. Our group was amazing, though -- largely composed of very like-minded people. And our guide, Sally Laurente, made the trip really exceed our expectations. It was the most amazing trip we have been on so far!

Marc Lyman (Jersey City,New Jersey,United States) ,Irene Ayz - Sep 09

Active South America eliminates the stress from a multi-dimensional adventure, maximizing enjoyment.

David Hardy (Larchmont,New York,United States) - Sep 09

This is truly one of the greatest experiences of my life. Well-organized, full of surprises and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Awesome. Thank you.

Jennifer Horspool (The Woodlands,Texas,United States) - Sep 09

If you just want to ride around in a tour bus, then this trip is not for you. I have taken many guided, adventure trips in the past and ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA compared favorably. I like paying one price and not getting hit up for little things all the time. But what really made the trip special was our primary guide Sally.

Susan Kifer (Tucson, Arizona, United States) - Oct 2009

Peru is a great place to travel - warm friendly people and great scenery. Don't underestimate the fitness level you need for the Inca Trail, but it is worth training a bit for it as it is one of the most amazing 3 days you will spend on this earth.

Curtis Rudbart (Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States) - September 2009

It's a great way to travel Peru and its history while getting yourself in better shape!

Tony Shu (Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States) - September 2009

A rare, possibly life-changing vacation experience. Active but not exhausting, it caused me to take up more exercise at home again. Excursions to gorgeous off-the-beaten-path sites were inspiring and unforgettable. Having never snorkled, this trip, along with an accommodating patient guide, gave me the courage to float over unkown sealife below, peaceful sleeping Galapagos sharks, and alleviated my fear of the sea.

DeDe Kennedy (Needham, Massachusetts, United States) - September 2009

I have traveled a good deal over the years, with a number of outfitters on several continents. ACTIVE should be very proud of the premium people they have representing them during the actual trip as well as behind the scenes. If you'll be ready to do your part, they'll over do theirs.

Kurt Futrell (Houston, Texas, USA) - October 2009

I have traveled the world and this is one of the best trips ever! Loved the (Lares) off the beaten path in the rural Andes - this was definitely the highlight of the trip. The guide had so much to offer beyond our expectations.

Liz Jamison (Taos, New Mexico, USA) - October 2009

We have been doing annual "Guys' Trips" for over 18 years (Kilimanjaro, motorcycling, scuba trips, etc) and this easily rates as one of, if not the best we have taken. Every detail was taken care of so that we could enjoy the travel and soak in the culture. Our guide Sally was easily the best guide we have had anywhere. We will be taking another trip with the ACTIVE team. It is just a matter of picking which one!

Bob Kulick (Coppell, Texas, USA) - October 2009

The Jaguar trip completely exceeded all expectations! I cannot wait to book my next trip with ACTIVE!

Melissa Dulski (Washington DC, USA) - November 2009

This trip has definitely recharged my soul and my spirit. This was my first guided tour and everything was very well organized and the guides and the staff took care of all our needs. I would definitely do another trip with ASA. Beautiful places, amazing people, great food, an unforgettable experience!

Aydin Mohtashamian (Irvine, California, USA) - November 2009

The trip was exhilaratingly brilliant! I went on an ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip in 2006 so I didn't look anywhere else because I had such a good experience last time. The wildlife and backdrop of the Galapagos Islands were always going to be outstanding but I got out so much more than just some good photographs being guided round these islands by experts.

Gemma Beech (Harborne, Birmingham, UK) - November 2009

It had always been my dream to visit the Galapagos Islands. Thanks to ACTIVE's wonderfully organized trip and small tour group, we had the most amazing honeymoon. We rarely saw any other tour groups and were made to feel that we had the islands to ourselves! Thanks ACTIVE for a fantastic adventure in the Galapagos Islands and memories that will stay with us for years to come.

Claire Radcliffe (Schwetzingen, Germany) - November 2009

This was my fourth trip with ACTIVE - I loved doing the Condor trip so much in December 2007 with our 26-year-old son that I signed up again with my husband. The new Condor itinerary with lots more hiking is even better than in 2007. The scenic backpacking and hiking was magnificent and getting to know these parts of Patagonia was thoroughly rewarding!

Margie Whitnah (San Carlos, California, USA) - Dec 2009

We loved traveling with ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA to Ecuador so much that we chose them again. This is my tenth group trip and I have to say - our guide Sebastian rocks!! The Condor was an amazing trip! DO NOT MISS SUMMITTING LOMO! My husband and I almost decided to stay at the bottom but Sebastian convinced us it would be worth the extra effort... it was so beautiful I cried tears of gratitude and joy!

Cynthia Chamberlin (Orlando, Florida, USA) - Dec 2009

ACTIVE is a great way to get away from it all and completely refresh your mind and soul. You get the balance of a challenging adventure to a relaxing vacation. I would use you in the future for another trip.

Brian Pastorini (Horseheads, New York, USA) - Jan 2010

I wanted to thank you for such an outstanding experience. I have traveled around the world, and only the far reaches of Nepal can compare to the stark and rugged beauty of this area. Most of all, we wanted to let you know what an outstanding job Sebastian did as our guide. I celebrated my 30th Birthday while on the W hike, and he went above and beyond my wildest dreams. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Gordon Riha (Lake Oswego, Oregon, USA) - Jan 2010

Sandy and I have enjoyed adventures together for more than 20 years. Our ACTIVE trips (we did an ACTIVE NEW ZEALAND trip in 2001) remain our most memorable and certainly were the best planned among many. On each trip we experienced something new that enriched us in ways we would not have guessed. In a world that has become increasingly complex, taking the worry out of travel is very much appreciated. Pura Vida!

Sandy & Mark Hudson (Shelby, North Carolina, USA) - Feb 2010

My grandson (12) and I (73) were the youngest and oldest persons in a group of 10. We had the time of our lives - enriched in part by a caring new group of friends and an enthusiastic guide. We were enchanted by the magical variety and wonder of the Galapagos seen on foot and in the water. Thank you Active SOUTH AMERICA.

Morley L. (Bowen Island, British Columbia, Canada) - March 2010

It was definitely an ADVENTURE with a capital "A". Although Machu Picchu was a highlight, it did not eclipse meeting locals on the Lares Trail, traveling to the jungle and sleeping in an open air lodge, or staying with our new Mama & Papa on Amantani Island. Peru is a beautiful country, with a rich history, mind boggling archeological sites and amazing people. It's a trip I'll remember forever.

Cathy Vollmer (Granite Bay, California, USA) - March 2010

This was my trip of a lifetime, the experience was beyond words.

Paul Mundy Jr. (Twain Harte, California, USA) - April 2010

The Galapagos was the best trip I have ever been on, words do not explain how great it was. It was almost like the whales, penguins, dolphins, sharks, marine iguanas and sea lions had been booked along with the accomodation, planes and boats! I met amazing people both on the trip and locally and do not think I have smiled and laughed so much in ages.

Jennie Silkstone (Nottingham, United Kingdom) - April 2010

This trip provided a diverse active itinerary and was affordable for our family. ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA compares to more expensive tour operators, at about half the price.

Dody N. (Mountain Home, Arkansas, USA) - May 2010

I have traveled extensively but this was the very best tour. I originally was looking for a cruise however, when I discovered we could actually stay on the Islands, I knew this was for us. Each day was filled with unique, magical moments and so wonderful that I did not think it could get better but then the next day was even more rewarding. I will remember those moments fondly for the rest of my life.

Dorothy Damiano (Clearwater, Florida, USA) - June 2010

Our ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA trip to Peru was truly amazing. Machu Picchu was breathtaking and awe-inspiring, but Peru is much more than that. The people, their costumes, their food, their textiles, and especially their reverence for Mother Earth (Pachamama) all make Peru so intriguing and very unique. Add it to your bucket list, you will not be sorry.

Anna Marie Munz (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) - May 2010

I was very impressed with ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA. I haven't ever done any multi-week guided tours before but I have traveled a reasonable amount and will say that it was the most stress free, efficient traveling I have ever done. I would definitely travel this way again. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of adventure and a lot of fun.

Megan Millward (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) - May 2010

In our family group we range from our 30's to late sixties, with a Boston marathon runner and registered scuba divers, 100-mile cyclists to an only moderately active walker and occasional swimmer and cyclist, we all managed to feel challenged and enjoyed every minute... it was indeed a trip of our family's lifetime.

Lois Gilchrist (London, Ontario, Canada) - May 2010

I will highly recommend this trip to friends and family. I loved being able to enjoy every moment because I didn't have to plan anything or know anything in advance. Our guide Andres was very informative and I always felt taken care of. If you're looking to explore Costa Rica with a fun blend of activities and relaxation, this is the trip!

Jen Taillon (Menlo Park, California, USA) - May 2010

Thank you so much for a fantastic trip, which really made my 50th and made me realise that you are only as old as you let yourself feel! I've never done a guided trip before and was quite anxious about it, but really enjoyed it. I went on my own and never once felt left out.

Mary Gladstone (Abingdon, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom) - June 2010

My shy 10 year old was sold on this trip from the first day. I've nicknamed him 'jungle boy' because he says he's coming back to go deeper into the jungle. Both boys loved the trip and my 7 year old especially wants to bring our guide home with us.

Chris Northrop (New Hampshire, USA) - July 2010

The first time we have taken a guided trip, and it was much better than expected (ie. nothing like a cattle herding experience). The trip was a very good alternative to go-it-alone backpacking we use to do before the children. An awesome holiday bringing the excitement of being really close to the local culture and environment without the hassle and time needed to organize it all yourself.

Richard Holden (Chatham, New Jersey, USA) - July 2010

The Lares Trail was an experience we will never forget, not just for the vistas and the sense of physical accomplishment, but for the support we received from each other as a group, and for the spiritual and cultural aspects that Carlos (our guide) brought. He taught us so much about the culture and beliefs of the people of Peru, all up against the backdrop of an amazingly beautiful country. A trip of a lifetime!

Melissa Galetto (Arlington, Virginia, USA) - July 2010

There was never a dull moment on this trip and as someone who likes to keep on the move, this trip kept me moving! The variety of experiences was well balanced and brilliant! Thank you.

Philippa Paquette (Woodstock, Connecticut, USA) - July 2010

My husband has been to Peru three times prior to this trip and ranks this as the best by far. It was well worth the cost and I'm sure has given our son a new way to relate to the world. He loved the activities, the other kids, and the amazing places we went and the variety of people we met. He was a little nervous about overseas travel, but now he cannot wait to return to Peru and see the rest of the world.

Cindy Landsberg (Monument, Colorado, USA) - July 2010

My South America trip was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The photos, descriptions and reviews only give you a fragment of what it's like to really be there. I can't even count how many times my breath was taken away. I genuinely feel like the trip has given my life a positive boost, I feel refreshed and rejuvenated since returning, and more adventurous than ever!

Rebecca "Reb" Johnson (Northophall, Mold, United Kingdom) - August 2010

Six women went to South America to conquer the Inca Trail. We came home stronger, fitter and more complete. If you think a guided tour is not for you, take it from someone who has lived abroad, travelled 4 continents and has never taken a guided tour -- this was an amazing trip from start to finish. More adventure than lecture and more excitement than you can imagine.

Rochelle Coleman (Cleburne,Texas, USA) - July 2010

If You Just Need the Facts

Over the past 16 years we have taken ~14,000 people on adventure trips all over New Zealand, Australia, South America and now, Nepal. We have always believed that an ACTIVE trip can make the difference between experiencing vs. “living” a place. Andrew, our founder’s original idea of taking people on trips that challenge them a bit, reward them a lot, and allow them to experience a place, is the DNA of ACTIVE.

We have learned some hard lessons along the way, and not every single client is always happy, but by putting considerable effort and resources into making everyone’s experience awesome. We keep track and ~95% of our clients who more times than not describe their trip as a trip of a lifetime. We strive to keep that “happy” rate while continuing to fill lungs with mountain air, tread of boots with real dirt and hearts and cameras with memories.

We’re extremely grateful for our success and we continue to provide ACTIVE trips that allow our clients to “live” a place not just see it.

A Young Lawyer Stumbles Upon an Idea

In 1995, after a short run as an attorney at a big New Zealand law firm, Andrew quickly realized that the legal profession would survive without him, and he took on a waaaaaay more fun job, driving buses for a New Zealand tour company. Like many entrepreneurs, Andrew is not very good with rules, and when he was told that ‘ten minute only’ strolls down walking trails was the rule, it got old pretty fast. Instead, with the enthusiastic approval of his passengers, he took them hiking up mountains and volcanoes for hours. They were thrilled out of their comfort zones, all abuzz about getting out and off the bus and loved the feeling of putting their boots on the ground and filling their lungs with fresh air. They were happy all right - but Andrew, often hours late to his next destination, was out of a job. But what his senses told him, that day, was that people want to experience the world, to push themselves a little beyond their expectations, to DO and not just SEE.

And So ACTIVE Was Born

Out of a job and inspired by following his gut he invited two guys to join him on a tramping trip in the South Island of New Zealand. Off they went, Andrew, Richard and John, and what that trip lacked in smooth logistics was made up for in spades with Andrew’s first clients delighted by New Zealand’s most scenic, challenging hikes. And the logistics weren’t toooo bad either – nothing Andrew’s Mum’s Sherry Trifle couldn’t fix at the end of the day! When their adventure was over Andrew had some money in his pocket and Richard and John had an unforgettable experience under their belts. And so ACTIVE was born.

To tell you Andrew had a set vision from that day forward, a perfect plan for creating the extraordinary community that ACTIVE is today would be an exaggeration at best. He didn’t. Not quite. He just knew he was onto something that got people out of their seats, sharing with others the special place that is New Zealand by experiencing it; not seeing it through a bus window. So in 1997 he took a total of 30 people, on five separate trips, adventuring around New Zealand. From there, every year he took few more folks and as the word spread, and the growth of ACTIVE turned out to be “meteoric” rather than “slow and steady”.

Growing Up

Then, trouble. On a training flight in 2001, learning to land on Lake Amphibian, something went terribly wrong. The aircraft hit the water and disintegrated. Andrew and his flight instructor crashed into the water, and were both seriously injured. Had it not been for a sailor who happened to be on the lake the moment they went down, the situation would have almost certainly been fatal. As it was, Andrew and his instructor were pulled out of the water, kept alive on the beach, rescued, and began the long road back to recovery. They were both fortunate to receive extraordinary care and have made excellent recoveries, all things considered. (They both wobble a bit when they walk, but YES, they both still fly. A lot.)

The recovery was no picnic, but as is common with these kinds of experiences, Andrew had a chance to re-evaluate what was important, and to this day he maintains that the aircraft accident was the best thing that ever happened to him. His recovery marked a turning point. He took his bike to Istanbul, still with an unhealed bone in his leg, and cycled the 4000 kms to London. When he came home, his delighted orthopaedic specialist declared the bone healed, and Andrew turned his ferocious energy, and new excitement about life into turning ACTIVE – hitherto a fun little hobby – into a “real” adventure travel company. And here we are!

What We’re Made Of

Over the past 16 years we have taken 14,000 people on physically adventurous trips all over New Zealand, Australia, South America and now, Nepal. No matter where we go we believe that an ACTIVE trip can make the difference between experiencing vs. seeing a place. Andrew’s original idea of taking people on trips that challenge them a bit, reward them a lot, and allow them to experience a place, is the DNA of ACTIVE. We strive to keep filling lungs with mountain air, boot treads with dirt and hearts and cameras with memories.

We have learned some hard lessons along the way, and not every single client is always happy, but by putting considerable effort and resources into making everyone’s experience awesome for them, makes us succeed most of the time. We keep track and ~95% of our clients describe their trip as a trip of a lifetime. We think that’s great!

We’re extremely grateful for our success. For the first time the current economic downturn is kicking our ass. But we are determined to find a way to weather the storm because we still believe in what we’re made of and what we have to offer – all done with our sweet hodge-podge team who also believe that to experience a place is to “live” it.

Our Hodge Podge Team

We mean it when we say hodge podge. We have a colourful lot including an ex-geophysics PhD, a Brit who worked in Africa, a line cook on a ship, an ex-street piano player, and… the list goes on and on. We all bring a plethora of unique experiences that make us understand, viscerally and genuinely, what it takes to help our clients “live” a place like we ourselves have done on nearly every continent on this amazing planet. Whether we tramped on it, biked its trails, skied its mountains or kayaked its waters.

Today, then Tomorrow

Andrew is a little grayer, a lot wiser and a tad weathered these days, but still continues to pursue his twin passions of aviation and ultra long distance cycle touring alongside running ACTIVE. No matter the economy, or mounds of work to attend to, or the hundreds of details that go into any trip, or the occasional cranky client, or technology learning curves that make us toss about, we’re simply not going anywhere, we have ACTIVE in our DNA, and we’re gonna keep adventuring. . . perhaps with you on a trip that you can “live”.

(Note: Andrew is an extremely passionate aviator. To this day, all ACTIVE clients who are private pilots are welcome to go flying with Andrew in Queenstown – it’s a very special place to see from the air!)
