  • ACTIVE 1

    What's The Rush?

I’m not a triathlete, but I’m in decent shape and I’m not looking to experience a place just through a bus window. I’m happy to slow down on the trail, soak it in and breathe in the fresh air.

  • ACTIVE 2

    Leg Stretcher

Sure, I own some hiking boots, they’re even worn in, but they don’t go on long trips. I like my creature comforts and I like to give a range of activities a go.

  • ACTIVE 3

    Earn Your Lunch

I stay active on vacation so that I can eat and drink what I like without feeling guilty. I season my trips with a little fresh exercise.

  • ACTIVE 4

    Challenge Accepted

I’ll let my trusty guides sweat the small things, so I can focus on my goal. Getting to the top, reaching the end, achieving my dreams! Sure, it’ll be tough, but the views will be worth it.

Day 1 — Arrive in Lima

Welcome to Peru! Your trip begins in Lima, Peru’s bustling capital, once known as the City of Kings. In colonial times, Lima was one of the richest cities in the world and South America’s most important port, linking the continent to the Spanish empire. We’ll meet you at the airport in Lima when you arrive and head to our accommodation in the coastal suburb of Miraflores. This vibrant, modern district has cinemas, shops, cafés and a remarkable pre-Hispanic ruin – Huaca Pucllana – an amazing pyramid-like structure. You’ll have the rest of the day to explore the area at your own pace before meeting up for our first dinner together.
Hotel Allpa, Miraflores, Lima (Dinner)

Day 2 — Journey to the Amazon rainforest

We’ll take an early flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, a frontier town in the Amazon basin, where we’ll take to motorised canoes and glide down the Tambopata River, one of the headwaters of the Amazon, deep into the jungle. Listen for howler monkeys in the tropical forest canopy above and spot macaws perched high on the river banks. This area is teeming with life – we’ll look for giant otters, capuchin monkeys, caiman and many other jungle animals on our boat trip to the lodge. After lunch, we’ll head out in search of the many monkey species this area is famous for. Keep an eye out for the macaw and other rainforest dwellers that often come out in search of food in the late afternoon!

Day 3 — Wildlife hike, jungle exploration

This morning, we’ll explore the jungle trails that criss-cross the dense rainforest. We’ll travel by canoe and hike through virgin forest to experience the wealth of native flora and fauna under the rainforest canopy, and learn how the indigenous people thrive in this challenging environment. The Amazon is the most biologically diverse place on Earth and you’ll have the chance to find out more about the ecosystem, as well as learn about the incredible array of medicinal plants that are found in this region. After lunch, you have the chance to replicate the daily work of macaw researchers, climbing a 30 metre tree with a rope, harness and jumar. From this vantage point we will have a macaws’ eye view of the forest. The rest of the afternoon is yours free to hang out at the lodge with a book, a game of cards or continue exploring the surrounding area. This evening, with our spotlight we’ll hop aboard a canoe again to go in search of the nocturnal South American crocodile, the caiman. During daylight hours, these reptiles are difficult to find, but at night the light reflecting off their eyes gives them away.

Day 4 — Explore Cuzco

We bid a fond farewell to our jungle home and head back to Puerto Maldonado, where we’ll catch a very short flight to Cuzco – the archaeological capital of the Americas and the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city – our base for the next couple of days. This afternoon you can join your trip leader to check out the amazing culture and history of Cuzco, or do your own thing. Today is also a great chance for parents to have some time on their own while we look after the kids,
if you like. You’ll get a sense of history, as you walk Cuzco’s central streets, lined with massive Inca-built stone walls that form the foundations of the city. Llamas and alpacas are often led through the cobbled streets of Cuzco, and the kids will be fascinated by the Peruvian way of life.

Day 5 — Hike to Las Salineras

Today we’ll take an incredible hike into the majestic Valle Sagrado de Los Incas. After a visit to the town of Maras, we’ll hike down to the salt pans of Salineras with the Rio Urubamba and the Sacred Valley below us. These unique salt terraces have been used since Inca times and provide a great chance for the kids to hone their camera skills. A hot spring at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of heavily salt-laden water that the Incas diverted into shallow pools to produce salt, and this is still done today.
Hotel Samanapaq, Ollantaytambo (All meals)

Day 6 — Explore Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast, we’ll travel to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. We’ll meet up with a specialist guide who will show us around the ruins for the first couple of hours. We have the rest of the day to explore the many passageways and stone structures of this mysterious place. Then we’ll head down to Aguas Calientes, a small settlement deep in the Urubamba River valley where we’ll take some time to look around the local market in this quaint sub-tropical town..
Hotel Inti Inn, Aguas Calientes (All meals)

Day 7 — Explore Pisac Market

This morning we’ll head back to Ollantaytambo then continue to Pisac, where we’ll have a chance to check out Pisac’s colourful Mercado Artesanal, one of the most vibrant markets in South America. For those who are keen, we’ll then begin a spectacular hike up to the Pisac ruins. These Inca terraces rise 600 metres (2000 feet) from the river below. It’s a heart-pumping hike up the ancient agricultural terraces, and you’ll never forget the views of Pisac and the Urubamba Valley! After exploring this ancient complex, we’ll head back down to the valley below us and meet up with those who chose to take it a little easier.
Hotel Royal Inca I or Hotel San Agustin, Cuzco (All meals)

Day 8 — Journey to Puno

Today we’ll cross La Raya Pass on our way to Puno, the capital of the Altiplano area and gateway to Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. This is one of Peru’s great highland areas, where herds of alpaca and llama graze and mountains rise steeply from the valley. Known as the folklore capital of Peru, Puno’s narrow streets are filled with the sounds of the typical Andean music called saylla, the hustle and bustle of the local market, and the bell-ring of the triciclos (local bicycle taxis)!.
Hotel Hacienda, Puno (All meals)

Day 9 — Kayak Lake Titicaca, home stay with local Quechua people

The Incas believed Lake Titicaca was the cradle of civilisation, the place where all life began. It’s a very special place and this morning we’ll paddle across it in sea kayaks. The kayaking is suitable for all ages and a great way to take in the landscape or, if you prefer, you can ride across in the boat instead. Our hosts on Amantani Island, members of the indigenous Quechua community, will meet us at the lake’s edge and take us home for lunch. Afterwards, they like to challenge their guests in a friendly game of soccer. Aside from being a surprisingly good workout since we’re at altitude now, it’s good fun and a unique way to get to know each other. When the game is over, we’ll hike to the Pachamama (Mother Earth) temple at the summit of Amantani Island for breath-taking views of the sun setting over Lake Titicaca. We’ll return to the family homes of our hosts for a home-cooked meal. The Quechua people have maintained
their traditional way of life for centuries, weaving wool, keeping cuy (guinea pigs), and farming their smallholdings. Tonight, we head down to the community hall to learn a few traditional dances with the locals. It’s very quiet here – no streetlights, no cars, no internet – and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the tranquillity.

Local family home, Amantani Island (All meals)

Day 10 — Explore Taquile Island

We’ll take a short boat ride across to Taquile Island today. The views across Lake Titicaca as we hike up to an isolated village here are spectacular – have your camera ready! The customs of this tiny community are totally unique to this island. We’ll have the chance to hang out with local people in the Plaza de Armas and learn about their famous textiles and fascinating way of life, before enjoying a traditional lunch of sopa de quinoa. This afternoon, we’ll return to Puno by boat for our final celebratory dinner together.
Hotel Hacienda, Puno (All meals)

Day 11 — Return to Lima, depart for home

This the last day of your ‘Capybara’ trip in Peru. We’ll take you to the airport in the nearby town of Juliaca so you can hop on a short flight back to Lima. If you have extra time after your trip, we’re happy to make suggestions on how to make the most of it. If you’re on your way home today, we’ll send you and your family back refreshed and invigorated from the great food, exercise, rest and fun adventures you’ll have had with us in Peru.

Optional Lima City Tour (add US$90)
We recommend this 5-6 hour tour if you've time to spare in Lima before your departing flight. You'll arrive in Lima around lunchtime and your guide will collect you from the airport and drop you back at the airport that evening ready for your departing flight, or at your accommodation in the city. During this tour you'll see the best spots in Lima, learn about the history and traditions of the region and taste the fares of Lima; the gastronomical capital of Latin America!

  • Amazing trip - learned so much, and want to come back

“3rd trip with Active Adventures, and all have been wonderful, stupendous, eye opening, with fabulous guides, and staff. Peru was an amazing country to visit; beautiful scenery, people, and culture. The Inca and pre-Incan archeology were of course incredible to see first hand. However, this was greatly enhanced by the depth of knowledge and historical context that our guide, Daniel, supplied. The lodge in the Amazon was my personal favorite place I have ever stayed - so beautiful, and a true experience to see the wild macaws, toucans, peccaries..... and so on. Lake Titicaca was beautiful and so rich in such a variety of cultures, and languages! Daniel our guide was incredibly gracious, kind, knowledgeable. The food was great, and the places we stayed as always with Active - fun, interesting and quite comfortable. Most of all, we were so impressed with the behind the scenes staff. The first day of our trip we were unable to make our first destination due to an airline problem. Active's staff scrambled to rearrange our entire itinerary so that we didn't miss anything. This meant rescheduling flights, permits, room reservations, etc.... and all over the Christmas Holidays. A true test of a great group of people is how they respond when something unexpected happens, and Active's staff proved how adept they were. From our point of view, everything was perfect and smooth, but we recognize and truly appreciate the work that went on behind the scenes to give us such a great experience. Thanks to all. ”
Lydia Andrews-Jones – California, United States January 2017
  • Capybara Adventure!

“I recently went to on the Capybara tour with my son. We had Arturo as our guide. I was so happy with this tour. I found Active Adventures online. I read the reviews and had phone conversations with staff and emails who were always happy to answer any of my many questions. My 19 year old son worked hard to pay for his part of the tour and I wanted it to be really great for him especially.
We both had the best time. We were fed amazing food that I never expected. I had no idea that we would be having such healthy and tasty meals. We were always told what the plan the next day was going to be and in detail. Any needs we had Arturo would make sure they were met. He was absolutely the best. A very educated, kind, thoughtful and funny young man. Could not have been happier with tour itenarary and our tour guide, Arturo. Would do another Active Adventures tour again and actually looking at booking one for next year! Thank you for a really special trip with my dear son! Many happy memories forever.

  • My first Adventure Trip

“For me,the trip was an unexpected surprise. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I really liked the choice of hotels. However, I was somewhat let down by the unexpected change in the Amazon Lodge, as the schedule mentioned a different lodge that I was hoping to see. I also liked the restaurants that we were taken to. In short, I think the Capybara Family Adventure was a good choice for my summer vacation.”
