Kermit the frog once sang the famous line: "It's not easy being green". We don't doubt that it was hard to be a famous frog, keep up a façade of wholesomeness and keep Miss Piggy at arms length. The façade of wholesomeness is all too common these days, and you'll find a million and one Galapagos tour operators proclaiming their list of environmental credentials to the world. While we go to great lengths to minimise our impact on our Galapagos Islands adventures, we're still very aware that our presence has an inevitable impact not only in the Islands themselves but also in the context of travel itself.

To address this we're committed to creating awareness in the trips we run in different parts of the world, and in particular, our Galapagos tours. You could come to the Galapagos Islands with a large tour company, on a large foreign owned boat, snap a few photos of iguanas, sea lions and blue-footed boobies with a foreign guide and go home not having gained much other than a full memory card. This isn't our style of course, so we've carefully thought through a few important issues that we can have some environmental control over and made sure these are part of all our Galapagos Islands adventures.

Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Awareness, then action, is the most important thing

We make it priority number one to highlight the challenges that flora and fauna face in the Galapagos Islands. From learning about the fragility of the Galapagos eco system, we've heard first-hand from many of our past clients about how their experience has changed them a little and applied what they've taken away from their Galapagos experience, to their own lives and community. Travel certainly has its impact, but it does open doors, so long as they're the right doors!

Small groups

If you were a marine iguana, or blue-footed boobie, your world would invariably be rocked if time and time again you repeatedly had large groups of people surround you at close proximity. We keep our groups small, and besides all the reasons why a small group is better, our impact is not nearly as invasive as a regular sized group touring the Galapagos.

Highly trained conservation guides

Apart from all the advantages of being guided by the best trip leaders in the business, our guides are certified conservation leaders, who have had to go through years of training and certification to be allowed to take you to these incredible places and experience the flora and fauna. In their spare time they volunteer in conservation programs and participate in community initiatives to educate local people to look after their back yard. It also means you'll be better informed!

Keep it local

By staying in locally owned family accommodations, and eating locally sourced food it means the dollars and cents go back into the local community.

Blue-footed Boobies

The little things matter

It's the sum of the small actions that add up to a credible environmental effort, so we ask the people travelling with us to do their bit. That means having a 'no bottled water' rule – only refillable water bottles (don't worry – we refill them for you with clean drinkable water!), sponsoring local environmental efforts, minimising our usage of materials and recycling whenever we can.

There's no avoiding the fact that in order to feed our wanderlust we'll be jumping on planes that burn jetful from time to time, and that we do have an unavoidable impact on just existing here on the planet. But with a mindset focused on learning how to conserve our resources, we'll incrementally start to make a difference over time.

    Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!

The Condor trip with our tour leader, Zac, was AWESOME! Our W guide, Cem, was also exceptional. The two of them kept us at a great pace and kept us laughing. You're on this trip for the scenery, and it was breath-taking. A great one word description of the landscape is "rugged". This tour provides a nice balance of longer hiking days and shorter hiking days with just truly stunning scenery including Torres del Paine, French Valley, Grey Glacier, Perito Morano glacier, and Fitz Roy. Definitely do the ice hiking!

    Worth every penny!

As someone who mostly travels independently, the thought of signing up for a two week organized group trip was rather intimidating but after reading all the reviews for Active, I thought I would give it a try... and I am so glad I did! Active Adventures made everything flow effortlessly- from the second I signed up until we were dropped of at the airport. The itinerary for the Condor trip is phenomenal, covering lots of different areas of Southern Patagonia and highlighting the most beautiful places. The W trek was one of the highlights of the trip and was even more enjoyable thanks to our guide, Cem, who was a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna and brought such a fun energy to the group. Additionally, our tour leader, Zac, had such a positive spirit, strong sense of humor and passion for his work that showed during our two weeks getting to know him. He was so well organized and made sure everything was lined up so we could relax and enjoy our downtime- including nailing a birthday dinner and cake! Would highly recommend this trip and organization to anyone in the future!

The group we shared it with got on so well - and were all so energetic, they made it all brilliant... our guides, the locals, the wildlife, the accommodation, the food, the wines it was all conducive to feeling spoilt - while you trecked hard during the day... a perfect Patagonia trek!

    Fantastic Adventure!

This trip was wonderful on so many levels. It was a perfect experience for our family of three college "kids", my husband and me. We traveled with two other families- a total of eight kids and six adults, a good group size. There was lots to see and do and we appreciated the opportunity to be active! Seeing the wildlife and learning about the Galapagos Islands was fantastic!! Zambo, our naturalist was terrific and related well to children and the adults. One of the unexpected pleasures my husband and I experienced was hearing our children utilize their seven years of middle and high school Spanish as they communicated with locals. Also, needless to say, they were pleased that the drinking age on the Islands is 18. We all enjoyed having a beer at the end of each wonderful day. The December weather was lovely. Comfortably warm and the water was beautiful!! We took full advantage of any extra snorkeling and swimming opportunities.

Our family had an extra day in Quito. We took the opportunity to hire a guide to take us around the city. What a great opportunity it was to learn about so many aspects of Ecuador's capital city. The Equator Museum was great and we enjoyed walking around the Plaza and seeing a couple of churches. Walking to the edge of the Pululhua crater was awesome! Lenin was a terrific guide!
