Why Active Adventures South America

What makes our South America adventures so special?

An Active Adventures trip in South America is no ordinary adventure vacation. We believe that you can't truly experience a country through a bus window, or on the tourist trails you can read about in Lonely Planet. Sure, we'll include some of those 'bucket list' hikes and locations, but we're all about getting 'off the beaten track' and up close to the South American culture and people, in rich and personal experiences.

meeting locals

We love meeting the locals and understanding their culture and customs

Our guides are the real story when you travel with us in South America. We only hire the best of the best to guide for us, and they're usually locals to the area they're guding in, in some cases it's the law that they have to be locals. And that's great, because who better to answer your burning questions about the Pisac Ruins, or Macchu Picchu, than a local Peruvian guide who has spent his/her life teaching people about the Inca Empire? Your guides will make you laugh, push you to challenge yourself, or to take it easy when you've been pushing hard. Guides are full of interesting and exciting stories, and you'll love getting to know them, and them you, as you explore South America's most beautiful places together.

We like to visit some exciting locations by bike, on foot, rafting, kayaking, and canyoning, but we also enjoy our creature comforts. Our days end with hot showers, clean rooms and delicious meals. We even arrange rest days, where you can read a book all day or shop till you drop. Most important of all - our aim is to exceed your expectations and we will do all we can to make this vacation the best one you've ever had. We've worked hard to put together the best trips in the places we go to in South America.

We give you the opportunity to explore South America's incredible scenery, wildlife, and outdoor activities, and do so at a pace you're comfortable with. Typically, guests on our South America trips are people from all walks of life, who may or may not have a great deal of experience in adventure travel. We design trips that take you to extraordinary locations in the most breathtaking parts of Ecuador, Peru, Patagonia, and the Galapagos Islands. To get there, we'll hike, bike, paddle, float and fly. You don't need to be extremely fit or active to come on one of our trips, but you need to be keen to get outside and experience South America's incredible scenery in an active manner!

We like that we're a relatively small company, and we have a base in Cusco, Peru. Our local knowledge and experience allows us to be really flexible. We offer a variety of small group adventures in South America, and we can put together any trip to accommodate any particular interest. One of the best things about travelling with us is that you have the opportunity to explore lots of different options everywhere we go.

We do some activities as a group, but there are always opportunities to get out and explore on your own. An Active Adventures trip is not a hiking tour, but we'll do some awesome hikes. It's not a cycling tour, but you can do some incredible rides. There are some great opportunities to go snorkelling or diving in the Galapagos Islands, but you won't miss out if water sports are not your thing. We try to minimise time on the road as much as possible and focus on enjoying our time in the great outdoors.

    Condor 2018

This IS the trip of a lifetime! The itinerary is excellent, including the highlights of Patagonia and more! Trip logistics are well planned and expertly executed. Our guide, Arturo was one step ahead at all times and clearly has developed relationships with all hotels, refugios, restaurants and especially our local guides, creating incredible, seamless travel. The local guides, Cem (Jim) on the W Trek, Christian in El Chaltan, our drivers and specific activity guides were all excellent and willing to share their knowledge and love for their countries. This trip was FUN, Arturo is fun and all the new friends we met on our trip were fun!!!

    Condor Nov 16

have used Active in NZ for Rimu trip and Condor trip lived up to expectations. It's some of the simple things like size of groups, quality of guides etc that make the difference for me. The sorting out of tips and meals just makes for an easy time as I travel for the trekking not the organising :-) good stuff active. Thanks

Superb Ecuador - don't miss this tropical paradise

Ecuador is a gem, and should not be missed. The Active Adventures Tapir trip ensures that you experience many of the highlights of this gorgeous country. From the outset you will experience new adventures like cycling down Mt Cotopaxi from 4,500m, walking around beautiful countryside and heading upriver to an EcoLodge. This beautiful, multi-day activities are thoroughly enjoyable, and your guide Mauro Chavez is exceptional, highly professional, capable and engaging, definately one of the best guides I've had the pleasure to meet.

    Simply said: Excellent

We’ve booked our trip with Active Adventures from NZ but ended up with Galakiwi Adventures as the implementing party. A bit confusing at the beginning but it turned out quite well.
Our trip through the Galapagos Islands started in San Cristobal, followed by Floreana, Isabela and ended in Santa Cruz.
We booked an all-inclusive trip and it turned out to be a very good decision. In fact we realized only after a few days how convenient is was to have everything organized for you and how much time you can actually safe. Starting with swimming gear that is provided as part of the package. Transportation to the ferry, getting on & off, having the transportation ready when you arrive, all those organizational aspects are taken care off which makes travelling from island to island very easy and smooth. Then hotels are ready, check in & out done super fast, luggage’s pick up etc. all organized. Lunch and/or dinners arranged in advance to maximize the vacation time and reduce wasted time to a bare minimum. What else to say besides that the organization was simply said excellent!!!
Then we had Zambo our tour guide, a fantastic & very knowledgeable person.
Not only questions from adults were not a problem for him, our kids and the other families kids who were also part of the group constantly came up with all sorts of questions and somehow, Zambo always had an answer.
All of this made it a great vacation; we enjoyed it a lot
