New Zealand Family Tours

We've been running carefully crafted family adventures for over a decade now (with a few updates along the way of course!). Our New Zealand 'Kea' trip is packed with activities like jet boating, hiking, rafting and kayaking, keeping everyone well entertained from day one. You won't have to worry about where to stay, what to eat, navigating the mountain roads or deciding what to do each day - we'll take care of it all for you.

The accommodation we use is perfect for families and the meals are designed for all ages to enjoy. Our guides are great with kids and love making sure young people and the rest of the family all have an incredible experience - they'll sweat the small stuff, so you can focus on family time without the headaches! We welcome children and teenagers of all ages and in fact, families often choose to join our other adventures too, so anything's possible!

A Very Kea Christmas and New Year

“Our family of five (16G, 14G and 9B) thoroughly enjoyed our trek through NZ's South Island on the Kea celebrating both Christmas and New Year. Lauren and Mel were fantastic and knowledgeable guides each with a sense of humor. Mel was a great cook, and we never went hungry. The hiking, rafting, jet boating and the activities were great even if the weather did not always cooperate. The long weekend in Queenstown was great to explore, rest and be with the family finishing with bungy jumping in the rain on the bridge where it was invented. It was a very memorable vacation and the pre-planned itinerary made for a very relaxing vacation. It would have been a much different vacation if we had had to drive, cook and schedule all the activities. Would definitely do another trip like this again!”

HEAPS of fun and HEAPS of memories for a lifetime!

“To summarize in a small paragraph cannot do justice to the amount of joy this trip brought to our family! We travel a lot, all over the world, and like to pretty much do it on our own, not afraid to be adventuresome! We have two college age boys that have been raised doing outdoorsy things all their lives. Soooo when I signed on for a two week, group guided trip, I sort of, kind of held my breath! Please, please let this not be a mistake, I repeated to myself. Kate and Natalie Active Adventure guides extraordinaire!!! The places we went, the adventures we experienced, the meals we shared, the friendships we found, the landscape we awed over, the seascapes we coveted, the laughs we had, the conquest of Angelus Circuit we cheered for and the memories etched in our hearts that will last a lifetime says it all. Our Rimu trip was the greatest trip of all!”

    LEGENDARY

Travelling to New Zealand has been on my bucket list for nearly half my life, and I'm so glad I spent three weeks there with Active! I was a bit worried going by myself, but it turned out to be the best vacation of my life. They took us to so many spots that I probably would have never seen if I tried to organize everything on my own. It was great to have them feed me, drive me, hike me, and take me to our accommodations at night - not once did I have to worry about anything. The accommodations themselves were so fun and unique, staying in them was a highlight of my trip. Our guides, Kim and Ashleigh, were fantastic young ladies. Ash was an amazing chef and Kim rocked the in-bus narration. I also think we had a phenomenal group of people who clicked very well, and absolutely the best weather one could wish for.

Even when there were a few changes to the itinerary due to road damages, weather issues, or anything else, the guides were on top of it so fast that we barely even noticed there was a problem. We did miss out on snorkeling with the fur seals, and our Franz Josef Heli-Hike was cancelled, but we were still able to see seals and take a helicopter ride to a glacier at another time. No loss whatsoever.

I'm a fairly active person under thirty, who lives in an mountainous region, and I was still challenged by the hikes and activities they provided. I also have bad knees, and was still able to get up and down the more difficult mountains. For those wondering abut the multi-day hike, it's definitely a work-out, but totally worth it! And be sure to invest in a hydration bladder, you'll really appreciate it! If you're looking for an outdoor adventure with lots of activity and fun, this is definitely one of the better ways to explore New Zealand.

    Unbelievable weather!

Our guides really made the trip! Katie and Eve were fantastic, and the South Island was so beautiful. I can't recommend the Tui trip enough.

A Deep Dive into the Understanding of the Maori Culture

Having just come from the South Trip we wondered if this trip would be more of the same. It was not. The landscape and activities were different and just as amazing. We learned so much about the history of the country, the Maori people, culture, and their language. The activities were varied and enabled us to experience the beauty of the North Island and all it has to offer.

    Excellent NZ Adventures!

My Rimu Active Adventure trip exceeded my high expectations. The hikes, backpacking, kayaking, and cycling adventures were thrilling, fun, and beautiful. Luckily for our group, we had absolutely perfect weather every day of the trip! Dani and Hilary were tremendous guides who taught me a lot about Kiwi life. Highlights for me were the 3-day backpacking tramp in Nelson Lakes National Park to Angelus Hut and kayaking in Milford Sound. I appreciated that we mostly stayed in local lodges, hotels, inns. I recommend this trip to anyone who wants to truly explore the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand with wonderful friendly guides.

    Exceeding expectations and more!

We had been planning this trip for about a year and I had been dreaming about this trip for about 7 years, therefore the expectations were high. Active Adventures did an excellent job and our guides Kuru and Liana made this a trip of a lifetime. The most amazing part is that they always were one step ahead of planning the next meal, hike, bike or even maneuvering around the NZ wild weather. All the planning ahead and adjusting on the fly would normally turn a trip to be very stressful but we were able to sit back and relax (not literally because it was very active) and truly enjoy the beautiful landscape and everything NZ had to offer. Truly the trip of a lifetime!
