Gondola Assisted Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking in Rotorua

Rotorua is the home of quality single track mountain biking in New Zealand and has paved the way for other resort towns like Queenstown and Hanmer Springs. On one side of the lake you have the Skyline Rotorua MTB Gravity Park, with downhill trails for all abilities and on the other, the Whakarewarewa Forest (also known as the Redwoods). We visit this forest on our Ultimate North Island Adventure 'Kauri' trip and with over 130 kilometres (80 miles) of continually evolving single track, it's a biker's paradise. The trails are crafted so that the uphills are gradual and easy, whilst the downhills vary in technical ability with some nice and smooth with lots of 'flow' and others steeper with roots or rocks.

Mountain Biking in Queenstown

Queenstown is a mountain biking mecca and riders of any ability are spoilt for choice – from cruisy riverside and lakefront trails, to back country bush and mountain tracks, it's all here. You'll have at least one free day in Queenstown on any of our South Island trips and you're guaranteed good riding, whether you choose to follow a gravel track up to and around scenic Moke Lake, race down a single track from the top of the gondola or explore one of the many mountain biking tracks along the lakefront that are easily accessible from town. For a splurge, book a heli-biking tour and get dropped off at the top of a remote track by helicopter - most of our guides are avid riders, so pick their brains about all of these options!

    Amazing Adventure!

I just got home from the Winter Rimu trip throughout South Island of New Zealand. To say it was simply "amazing" does not accurately describe the trip. The views, adventures, service and guides were extraordinary. The trip was worth every penny. Even when snowstorms came or other inclement weather hit, there was always a backup plan that allowed us to keep experiencing the awesome culture, people, mountains, lakes and glaciers of New Zealand. I was very impressed with Active Adventures and can not wait to plan my next trip through Active Adventures!

    Review of the Kiwi trip

I chose to visit NZ with Active Adventures because I wanted to experience the South Island from tip to toe in an active fashion. The trip was exactly what I wanted. I loved hiking and kayaking, enjoyed visiting the towns and was swept away by the scenery. I learned a lot about the country's history, geology and mythology from my two guides. And I had fun.

    2017 Oct/Nov Rimu

My 2017 Rimu trip was fantastic! Somehow our fabulous guides Ben and Emma arranged for clear sunny skies, a great mix of travelers, and an all around fun time. Seriously though, our group of 10/11 (we had a late addition) got along well from day 1 - we learned about each other's backgrounds, played cards and dice games, and shared bottles of wine. Ben and Emma worked tirelessly to make sure our travels were smooth - often 16+ hour days for them. Emma cooked wonderful meals for us and made sure everyone's dietary requests were met. Ben drove Whina (our bus) so well for so many hours to get us to our destinations - we'll never forget the tunnel! And they both were great guides on the hikes. Thanks for all the wonderful memories!

    South Island Treking trip

We are both keen walkers and had the Milford Trek on our hit list. We have already done the C2C in the UK, The Inca trail and the TMB in Europe (also in the 'top ten'). The Manuka trip allowed us to do the Milford Trek but also walk other treks on S Island such as The Diamond Lake and Mount Cook which were also awesome. The Milford Trek does live up to its name as 'The finest walk in the World'! The scenery everywhere is truly spectacular even when it rains which often enhances the experience.

Even better than expected, and I expected a lot

This was a truly awe inspiring trip---from the mountains to the rain forest to Milford Sound. A friend of mine advised me not to go on this trip. He said if I did, I would never have anything better to look forward to and he may have been right.
Realizing that an extraordinary amount of work is done by the office and support staff, I still have to say that this trip would not be what it was without the guides, Nick and Tory, going above and beyond what anyone could have expected. They have got to be among the best.
Thank you to the entire gang at Active Adventures.
