Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is a landmark creation for the New Zealand Cycle Trail project. The journey begins at Mt Cook Township, an alpine village sitting under the watchful eye of Aoraki Mt Cook – at over 3,700 meters (12,139 feet), this is New Zealand’s tallest peak. From here you’ll head east until you reach the small seaside village called Oamaru. The entire journey descends over 1,000 metres across 300 kilometers... also making it the longest continuous ride in New Zealand.

Along the way you’ll pass an incredible array of landscapes – from the great granite peaks of the Southern Alps, to the opaque glacial-fed southern lakes, lush farmlands, stunning river valleys, limestone cliffs and golden grasslands.

The trail is rated grade 2-3 (easy to intermediate), which means there may be climbs and descents that will require a reasonable level of base fitness, depending which sections you choose to ride. The majority of the trail is a smooth and safe gravel path, but you can expect to encounter short on-road sections, and there is a strong likelihood you’ll have farm animals passing across the trail… welcome to the true kiwi countryside!

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

Since the trail spans such a great distance across the South Island, the weather can change greatly. If you’re riding the trail solo, make sure you prepare by packing the appropriate clothing. We highly recommend a layered clothing system whereby you can easily layer up if cold weather hits or you encounter rain, or layer down during a heatwave in the summer months.

If you’re joining us on our ‘Weka’ cycle tour, we’ll take a spectacular ride through the limestone country of North Otago from Omarama to Lake Ohau. This trail treats you to expansive views of rugged mountain country, vast tussock lands, beech and tawhai forest, and sparkling clear rivers. Tonight, we’ll stay in the beautiful Lake Ohau Lodge. The lodge is tucked in beside an alpine lake, with incredible views stretching across to Aoraki Mt Cook and the Southern Alps – the ideal spot to rejuvenate the body and soak in the hot tub taking in some world class star gazing!

      What's The Rush?

I’m not a triathlete, but I’m in decent shape and I’m not looking to experience a place just through a bus window. I’m happy to slow down on the trail, soak it in and breathe in the fresh air.

Rimu - Awesome South Island trip!

This trip is really a great way to experience the true beauty of the South Island. We hiked in beautiful areas with spectacular views, biked the Te Araroa track and sea kayaked in Milford Sound and in the Okarito Lagoon. Our guides, Ben and Emma, were absolutely great! They were cheerful, caring and attentive to our needs. They kept us well fed all along the trip even while hiking in remote areas with minimal cooking facilities. Accommodations were great and representative of the visited area. Thanks to one of our travel companions, we had magnificent weather for the trip duration… we cannot have asked for better temperatures.

    Wonderful Trip

A wonderful experience....Koru and Lauren were fantastic guides and showed us the best New Zealand has to offer. From Maori history to present day sights the tour was constantly informative and inspirational. Although it was "guided" they gave plenty of freedom to hike at your own pace, take in the sights without feeling rushed and allowed ample time to take in all NZ has to offer.

Exceeded my Expectations. A Trip to Treasure.

Active adventures provided an outstanding New Zealand experience. Our guides (Tory and Jordie) went above and beyond during our South Island Rimu trip. Their passion for the outdoors as well as the traditions and culture of NZ enhanced the two week journey. As guides, I was most impressed by their attention to detail and safety. I appreciated the warm smiles, gems of knowledge and yummy meals on even the challenging hike days. For my birthday, during the three day hike at Nelson Lakes National Park, Tory and Jordie surprised me with two delicious cakes to share with my new hiking family. A moment I will treasure, enhanced by the breath taking views of the alpine lake at Angelus Hut.

The beauty of the country surpassed my expectations, particularly sites like Milford Sound and Mt. Cook. Such a diverse, lush landscape, each hike offered a unique perspective of the stunning views. Combined with the kayaking and biking options, allowed for an exciting and interesting mix. The highlight of my two weeks was my heli-hike on the Tasman Glacier, such an unforgettable experience.

I'm looking forward to future Active Adventure trips, but will definitely keep a little piece of NZ in my heart. A truly bucket list destination.

Joy Project; New Zealand's North Island

The Tongariro Crossing was the highlight of my visit of the Northern Island. I felt as though we were trekking on another planet.

Andrew and Claire shared their extensive knowledge of New Zealand’s culture, land, flora and fauna while offering great music on Dick, the bus and fabulous meals!

I was asked about traveling to New Zealand alone. I explained I was not alone but traveling with twelve friends I had not met yet. This turned out to be factual.
