Pepper Ruston

New Zealand Guide

Pepper is another of our Australian guiding contingent. And we're glad to have her! Pepper was born on the Gold Coast and lived there until she was 20. Since then she'd been living in a little mountain town called Jasper in the Canadian Rockies, before deciding to come and check out what New Zealand is all about.

Hobbies?

I love backcountry skiing, rafting, sailing, kayaking, mountain biking.... basically anything outdoors!

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?

So far I would have to say the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island in Canada. While it’s only 75km over 6 days I have never seen so much mud and so many ladders in my life (the biggest being some 218 rungs!). The track was built to help rescue survivors from shipwrecks along the dangerous coastline and so there was heaps of history as well as gorgeous wildlife. Exhausting but incredible!

Any special talents?

I'm a below average juggler, and I can touch my nose with my tongue (I haven't tried the two at the same time - but I don't think it's beyond me).

Have you studied beyond school?

I have a Bachelor of Science majoring in Wildlife Biology and Ecotourism from Griffith University on the Gold Coast.

Testimonials

“Pepper was equally fun! She was extremely outgoing, friendly, and had a wealth of knowledge about the different things we saw along our trip. If Kaleb didn’t have an immediate answer to something, she always seemed to know it, and vice versa, so they paired well together. She was a fantastic cook, and even when we spent nights in a hut with no electricity she managed to spring up the most amazing dishes (some of the other hut guests were definitely jealous of our meals). Once again, our guides made the trip and I have nothing but good things to say about both of them!”

“Pepper is awesome. Always smiling, even when careying two backpacks! She is a great cook and super fun to be around. Her upbear personality is infectious. Great job!!”
- Michael Meyer (Naperville, Illinois, United States), Rimu January 2018

“Awesome individual. Gave every participant personal attention, with sensitivity to personal goals for the trip. Worked extremely well with co-leader. Total "can do" attitude. Ridiculous amount of energy (a lot!).”

    Tui Trip

The Tui tour was the best trip I've ever had, all the group was great and very friendly, there was a very good feeling with all the group. It was so great to see all the nice places that you have in NZ, the tour passed so fast that I would love to do another one with you guys! And what about the super guides that we had - Jordy and Holly! They are the best ever, I would like to thank them again so much for the great time we had with them, I'm ready to do more! Holly next time we'll do the swimming race in the lake? Thanks a lot again, Ia orana from Tahiti.

Chris Darcy review of Rimu Trip

The term trip of a lifetime gets used far too frequently. This was one. The South Island of New Zealand is likely the most beautiful place on earth, pound for pound. Nowhere else can you find so much beautiful landscape, diverse landscapes and microclimates packed into such a small area, which can be travelled in such a short amount of time while still doing it justice. Our guides, Holly and Claire, were fantastic - wonderful dispositions, knowledgeable, tireless and attentive - and made the trip special. And Kiwis are some of the nicest folks on earth (after Canadians of course) - we didn't have a single negative experience the whole time we were there. If you've been thinking of going to New Zealand don't wait - you can't do better than this trip - just make sure you take extra memory cards for your camera.

Wonderful Manuka Trip With Active Adventures, New Zealand

Hi, I'm back home in the USA after my Manuka adventure with Active Adventures, New Zealand. I would like to compliment everyone in your company that I came in contact with....from my initial contact with Fiona to my pre-trip emails with Lynette everything was handled with complete professionalism. This was my first adventure with your company but I'm pretty sure that it will not be my last.
Everything during the trip went forward in a very efficient manner. I was amazed at the energy level and efficiency of our guides Amanda and Holly. The amount of work that they were able to accomplish during the course of a day, their energy levels and very positive attitudes made the trip enjoyable for all of us clients. Also, their knowledge of their country and their willingness to share made the trip even more enjoyable for me.
Again, thank you to all and especially to Amanda and Holly....I really enjoyed my first visit to New Zealand.
