Annika Andresen

New Zealand Guide

Where were you born and where did you grow up?
From a young age I spent my summers sailing around the North Island of New Zealand with my family and became captivated by the environment and the life I found within it.

What are your hobbies?
I love everything outdoors, from hiking high up in the mountains, sailing along the coastline and my favourite activity - being submerged below the surface.

Do you have any special talents?
Some people believe I'm a fish because I can hold my breath underwater for up to 3mins 35seconds.

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?
My greatest outdoor adventure was exploring Antarctica! I was lucky enough to spend six and a half weeks on the ice, living at Scott Base, working on the Scott’s and Shackleton’s historic huts and completing the restoration of the Sir Edmund Hillary’s Hut.

What did you do before you became a guide?
During my studies I started work at Dive Tutukaka where I continued my scuba diving training to become an Instructor. I use my natural enthusiasm and infectious personality to inspire those around me and share my passion for the environment.

Do you have a favourite quote?
‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’ - Mark Twain

Have you studied beyond school? If so in what?
I studied for five and a half years completing a Masters of Architecture at the University of Auckland.

Testimonials

“Annika was a ball of enthusiasm the entire trip. Even when she turned her ankle on Day 9 she wrapped it up and soldiered on, even making the Tongariro crossing which we participants were turned back from. She also was so excited about her cooking and being able to please us, it was very sweet. ”
- Barbara Murray (Cardiff by the Sea, California, United States), Kauri October 2018

“Annika was the sunshine on the rainiest days of the trip! She is simply lovely and also willing to help in any way we needed.”
- Tammy Banting (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), Tim Lemessurier (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), Kauri October 2018

Best family trip ever. The South Island of New Zealand is one of the most spectacular places on the planet and the Rimu trip takes you to all the highlights. Our group hit the jackpot with Koru and Ash. They were fabulous. This trip gets my highest recommendation all around.

A Deep Dive into the Understanding of the Maori Culture

Having just come from the South Trip we wondered if this trip would be more of the same. It was not. The landscape and activities were different and just as amazing. We learned so much about the history of the country, the Maori people, culture, and their language. The activities were varied and enabled us to experience the beauty of the North Island and all it has to offer.

Everything we hoped for and MORE.

This was my first trip to New Zealand, and to the southern hemisphere. We had dreamed of this for many years, and it was so much more than we had even hoped for. So many memories and highlights: Morning alpine glow on Mt. Cook. Any day that it was sunny and you could see those amazing mountains. Turquoise alpine lakes. The day we spontaneously stopped at a deserted beach on the west coast, and saw Hector's dolphins frolicking. The picnic on the hill at Braemar's station. The nights at Braemar, the laughing and wine. Racheal (our guide) encouraging me and talking about growing up on a sheep farm while hiking up Key Pass. The stars at night - the Milky Way and upside down Orion! The mystical drive down to Milford Sound in the fog and light rain, and the clearing while on the boat. Going under a waterfall and just yelling in joy. The amazing, kind, funny and interesting people we met on our tour. If you are even thinking about it - go! You will not be disappointed.

    Great Trip

Great trip! Diverse and interesting hikes, bike riding, and kayaking in spectacular landscape. I particularly appreciated having all the trip details covered, so I didn't need to worry about any of the arrangements. A turn-key experience.

    Melissa's Weka Adventure

I knew from pictures taken by family that New Zealand is a beautiful place but the beauty is much deeper than the eye can see. Everyone we came in contact with was wonderful and I can't think of enough superlatives to describe our guides, Nick and Elder. The trip was above our expectations. The biking was varied and interesting and the hikes worth every step. The food was too good and we enjoyed the variation in accommodations. We would go back and do it again.
