New Zealand Guide
When Amanda's not guiding, she calls Queenstown home, so in between Active trips she'll be happily hanging out around the adventure capital of New Zealand, with her partner Pete.
Amanda grew up in a small East Otago town called Palmerston (north of Dunedin) and for as long as she can remember, she's been in love with the outdoors. Over the years she would often pack the car up - tent, food, sleeping bag and walking shoes - and head out to "simply get lost in nature". She counts rivers and mountain tops as her favourite spots, and like all of us, is a huge fan of beautiful Aotearoa, and is excited to share her 'back yard'.
From the age of 11 she has worked in hospitality; with her first role as a 'under water ceramic technician' aka dishwasher in her mother's restaurant!. Since then, roles have varied in all shapes and sizes (Reception, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Human Resources, Reservations to name a few). Amanda actually heard about this guiding role through a friend that already works for Active.
And in her words, "from the moment the seed about potentially being an Active Guide was planted in my head I couldn't let the thought go...... 10 months later I found myself applying for a hiking guide position. I couldn't have made a better choice, now I have a job that comprises of three things I love the most; the outdoors, hospitality and driving the beautiful NZ roads. Bingo!"
“Amanda was incredible; she was the Powerhouse. She's a pixie of a thing, but STRONG. Dear Lord. She can haul around bags bigger than her, and turn Jack on a dime. She knew where she was going, or at least always made it look that way, was always running around to get Jack into position for the next leg, and then running to meet us...I didn't realize one body could contain so much energy. Amanda is also hilarious, effervescent, and just FUN. Plus, she's from a rural area, and my husband and I are too...so we just gelled with her. We GOT her.”Danyel Tacker (Morgantown, West Virginia, United States), December 2016
“Amanda was well organized and explained timelines and equipment needed for the next journey. She drove exceptionally well and I never felt unsafe during the many kilometers covered. I loved how she would encourage group participation by playing games like "tractor" or count the one lane bridges. Often she would bring interesting facts about the different roads traveled. She was exceptionally personable and always seemed ready to visit the next place. Was a true pleasure to be around and was integral in making this a wonderful experience. I will say both Amanda and Holly have a special place in my heart and made a friend for life.”Matthew Tacker (Morgantown, West Virginia, United States), December 2016
“It truly was the trip of a lifetime. The guide was a local Kiwi who really knew her stuff in terms of hiking and activities, culture and local legends and flora and fauna. Could not have asked for a better guide. If you're lucky enough to get Amanda L. to guide your trip you're in for a real treat :)"Evelyn Zuk (Massachusetts, United States), Winter Rimu May 22 2017
