About Active Adventures New Zealand

Not just another tour company.

We believe that scenery needs to be experienced, not seen through a bus window. We'll take you to our mountains, rainforests, lagoons, fiords, volcanoes - and we'll walk, cycle and paddle through them. You don't have to be a tri-athlete to come on one of our trips - but you need to be interested in experiencing New Zealand's incredible scenery in an active manner!

We take ordinary people, who may or may not have a great deal of experience in the outdoors, to the most scenic and rewarding parts of New Zealand. Clients on a typical trip will have a range of experience - from folks who have spent a couple of days in the backcountry in their lives, to those who spend most weekends in the hills.

Not your ordinary New Zealand vacation package!

Interested? We have happy clients all over the world who have taken our trips and who'd love to tell you all about it! For referrals, please call or email us and we'd be happy to put you in touch with some of our previous clients.

about us

An Active New Zealand trip is not a hiking tour - but you'll do some incredible hikes. It's not a cycling tour - but you can do some great bike rides! It's not a lazy vacation - but you'll finish our trips more rested than if you'd spent two weeks in bed! We like to visit some pretty wild places - on foot, by bike and by sea kayak - but we also like our creature comforts. Our days end with hot showers, sumptuous meals and clean sheets. We even arrange rest days, where you can lounge about with a good book and not get up till dinnertime. Most important of all, our emphasis is on exceeding your expectations. We've worked hard to get where we are, and we intend to keep providing the most amazing New Zealand vacation packages! It's that simple.

    Awesome Tui Trip!

My husband and I traveled to New Zealand for a late honeymoon and our adventure started with the Tui Trip which couldn't have been better! Between the amazing places we visited along the South Island from our unbelievable guides who quickly became friends, the trip definitely exceeded our expectations! We quickly learned how kiwis truly cherish and appreciate what their beautiful country has to offer and are so thankful to have had such a wonderful experience. New Zealand will always hold a special place in our hearts, along with our memories of hiking, biking, cheers-ing, and chatting with new friends. Thank you Koru and Liana, for making our trip so unforgettable!

    It doesn't get much better!

What a fantastic time traveling with family and new-found friends! New Zealand is an absolutely beautiful country, with thrills and adventure around every corner (and there a lot of them)! Our guides Ken and Elder were as good as they come; from their knowledge of the country, to their welcomed encouragement on the trail and the water. Oh, and did I mention their wholesome and delicious cooking?!?
I would not hesitate to travel with Active Adventures again. Their organization, communication and willingness to please were simply over the top. Next year in Patagonia perhaps???

Joy Project; New Zealand's North Island

The Tongariro Crossing was the highlight of my visit of the Northern Island. I felt as though we were trekking on another planet.

Andrew and Claire shared their extensive knowledge of New Zealand’s culture, land, flora and fauna while offering great music on Dick, the bus and fabulous meals!

I was asked about traveling to New Zealand alone. I explained I was not alone but traveling with twelve friends I had not met yet. This turned out to be factual.

    Worth every penny!

This was an amazing trip - highly recommended! Our guides, Koru and Liana, were great - kept us moving and active in all kinds of weather and conditions. Some of the planned tour had to be modified due to weather - it does rain a lot - but no regrets at all. We got a taste of New Zealand on beautiful days, rainy days, and once in rain, sleet and hurricane force winds, but we were always well cared for and felt like we'd seen New Zealand in all of it's majesty. The hiking was strenuous enough to feel like a challenge and leave us tired and a bit sore most days, but never too difficult. The Siberia Valley part of the trip was just spectacular! Koru's knowledge of New Zealand's native plants and animals, history, Maori heritage, and Lord of the Rings stories were particularly fascinating. Would love to go again!

Kiwi & Active Adventures - Perfect!

With great anticipation, and admittedly high expectations, Ann and I left New Orleans on Christmas Day to begin our trip to the North Island of New Zealand. We each had long wanted to see this special place! From the moment that Phil and Vanessa picked us up, until the time that Phil and Elder dropped us at the airport for our return flight, we could not have been happier, or more satisfied, with our trip. Phil, Vanessa, and Elder were perfect guides... and hosts. The history and information that Phil shared along the way helped us understand, and therefore appreciate even more, the places we visited and the people we met. We fell in love with the North Island, and its people and history! With Active Adventures having arranged practically everything, and Phil, Vanessa, and Elder taking great care of us along the way (even preparing our last 2 wonderful evening meals), we had nothing to do but rise each morning and enjoy our day! Perfect!
