Arrive Milan Malpensa, visit Sacro Monte Varallo

Your trip begins in Milan, one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities, and the gateway to the Italian Lakes District. We’ll meet you at Milan Malpensa International Airport in the morning and we’ll head towards the Italian Alps, standing tall in the distance. After a short drive into the Piedmonte region, the wide plains turn to valleys and the horizon turns jagged as we enter one of Italy’s least visited, but most beautiful valleys. Valsesia’s main center is Varallo, the largest and first of many stunning towns that line the edges of the Sesia River and narrow side valleys. From Varallo’s town center, we’ll hike up to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sacro Monte di Varallo. Built in 1491 by a Franciscan friar, Bernardino Caìmi, Sacro Monte is one of the oldest religious structures in Italy. Perched on a steep hillside above the valley, the intricate architecture and setting is surreal, with fantastic views down to the cobbled streets of Varallo below. With no through road to any other region, the dramatic beauty of Valsesia will reveal itself around every corner as we drive further to Alagna village, our home for the next couple of days and a great location to hike the trails of the incredible Monte Rosa range of the Alps.

Hotel Monterosa, Alagna Valsesia (Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), 2-3 hours, elevation +/- 490 meters (1607 feet)

  • Day 2

    Hike Val D'Otro

This morning we’ll begin the hike right from our doorstep, making our way through the upper village of Alagna, characterized by immaculately groomed traditional chalets and cobbled pathways. Leaving the village, we’ll hike up toward Otro Valley, through picture-perfect pasture land, passing herds of cows and groves of fir trees. Otro Valley is scattered with centuries-old history, intact nature, and hamlets - the unchanged testimony of the Walser inhabitants. The trail is a great warm-up for the days to come and offers the possibility to contemplate one of the most poetic landscapes in the whole of Valsesia. We’ll have views of Corno Bianco (3,320 meters), the highest peak in the Valley with its two glaciers – Nevato and the Glacier of Otro. We’ll stop for lunch at a mountain rifugio before hiking back down to Alagna, where you’ll have the afternoon to explore or rest up and relax in the village before meeting for dinner.

Hotel Monterosa, Alagna Valsesia (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 14 kilometers (8.6 miles), elevation +/- 730 meters (2,395 feet)

  • Day 3

    Hike Alta Valsesia National Park

This morning we’ll take a short transfer from the hotel to Alta Valsesia Natural Park, where we’ll explore for the day. Established in 1979, the Alta Valsesia Natural Park is classed as an Alpine Park and it’s the highest protected area in Europe, stretching over 3,500 meters of land all the way to Monte Rosa, sitting at 4,554 meters. The valley embraces a wide variety of environments, from crisp green pastures to its Himalayan cirque located under the huge south face of Monte Rosa where the Sesia River is born from the glaciers of the mountain. Your guides will choose the best trail for you on the day, with the Park rich in fauna, you may have the chance to see ibex, chamois, deer, marmots, and even eagles! We’ll stop for lunch at a mountain rifugio before hiking down through the old Walser hamlets back to Alagna. Once we return to Alagna, we’ll have time to rest up and relax in the village before meeting for dinner.

Hotel Monterosa, Alagna Valsesia (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Hiking: We'll decide on the day, as our options are endless!

  • Day 4

Hike down to Pella, boat to Orta San Giulio

This morning we’ll drive a short distance back down the valley. From Varallo, we’ll say goodbye to the steep green walls of Valsesia and head into the forests of the Vercelli province, passing the beautiful villages of Civiasco and Arola. Our next stop is Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary, a stunning complex built in the early 1700s, overlooking Lake Orta and out towards the Swiss Alps – the views are simply spectacular! After taking in the first of the Italian Lakes from this amazing vantage point, we’ll hike down to the lakeside village of Pella where we’ll board a boat across to San Giulio Island – the jewel in the crown of Lake Orta. We’ll have time to stroll the Via del Silenzio pathway around the Island and explore the quiet narrow cobbled streets, quaint courtyards, and incredible 12th Century basilica. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time several hundred years! The time travel doesn’t stop there though, as we board our boat again and head a very short distance across to the village of Orta San Giulio, our home for the next couple of nights.

Hotel Bocciolo, Orta San Giulio (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 4.8 kilometers (3 miles), elevation +/- 300 meters (984 feet)

  • Day 5

    Sea kayak Lake Orta

After breakfast this morning, we’ll take to the lake by sea kayak and paddle past the numerous villages that dot the shoreline. Enveloped by dark green woodlands and old settlements, Lake Orta is the quietest of the Italian Lakes, making it the perfect place to stop off for a lakeside espresso and take in serene village life. Later we’ll return to Orta San Giulio where there’s time to walk the lakeside pathway and stroll up the cobbled pathways to the Sacro Monte chapels overlooking the village and across the western shores of Lake Orta – the views are breathtaking! If you’re keen to carry on paddling today, there’s plenty of opportunity to go a little further with our guides after we return to Orta San Giulio.

Hotel Bocciolo, Orta San Giulio (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Kayaking: 10 kilometers (6 miles)

  • Day 6

    Hike the Mottarone mountain range

This morning we’ll drive a short distance to Armeno, a quaint village nestled in the foothills of the Mottarone mountain range, which runs the whole length of Lake Orta and divides it from Lake Maggiore. We’ll set off from Armeno, hiking along old cobbled pathways to the Church of Madonna de Luciago, with stunning views of pastureland to the south. It’s fields and forest the whole way to the top of the Mottarone, where you’ll be rewarded with expansive vistas from the Po Valley to the summits of the Alps. You’ll be struck by the view of Monte Rosa and the seven lakes that lie in this natural basin. We always allow plenty of time to soak in these views, so you can rest and then take a stroll in every direction. Later, we’ll drive back down and there’s time this afternoon to soak in the atmosphere of the narrow streets and lake promenade before we meet for dinner in one of the many charming cobbled squares.

Hotel Lido Perla Negra, Stresa (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles), elevation + 968 meters (3,175 feet)

  • Day 7

    Hiking Val Grande National Park

Today we’ll hike through the largest wilderness area in Italy – the Val Grande National Park. Along a panoramic trail into the conifer forests and alpine meadows of the area, we’ll enjoy incredible views of the craggy peaks of the Alps to the north, and the blue waters of Lake Maggiore to the south. Where our hikes in the days before have passed through villages, our hike today is all about the wilderness and the combination of silence and grand views. Afterwards, we’ll head back to Stresa for another exceptional local restaurant meal.

Hotel Lido Perla Negra, Stresa (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 8 kilometers (5 miles), elevation +/- 430 meters (1,410 feet)

  • Day 8

Journey to Lake Como, hike to Vezio Castle

This morning we’ll head to Lake Como – Italy’s most dramatic and iconic lake. Our home for the next couple of days is San Giovanni, one of the most beautiful stretches of lakeside settlement in the world. It’s easy to fall in love with this place. Just around the corner is Bellagio, sitting on the peninsula where the western and eastern arms of the lake meet, this town known as the ‘Pearl of the Lake’, is surrounded by exuberant gardens, a maze of steep stone staircases, gorgeous lake-side squares and incredible views to the Alps. If you’re keen to hike today, we’ll take a short boat ride across to the village of Varenna with its famous pastel-coloured houses that seem to defy the laws of physics, perched on the steep green slopes that rise straight up from the lake. From here we’ll hike on the cobbled pathway and trail up to the hamlet of Vezio. The center-piece of this tiny settlement is the Vezio Castle, the remains of a fortified watchtower built in the middle ages. The views from up here are spectacular. Later we’ll walk back down to Varenna before catching the boat back across the lake. Tonight you’ll be able to choose from a variety of local restaurants in nearby Bellagio for your evening meal.

Hotel Locanda della Maria, San Giovanni (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Hiking: 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles), elevation +/- 150 meters (495 feet)

  • Day 9

    Sea kayaking Lake Como

The steep walls of the Alps, dropping straight down into the clear waters of the lake, with stunning villages and coves dotted along the edges are a sight to behold. Around every corner, more and more of Lake Como’s charm reveals itself. You’ll be itching to explore! Explore is exactly what we’ll do, and all from a sea kayak, as we glide past the incredible coves, 17th Century houses, and gardens that dot the lakeside – if there was a more perfect example of man-made structures and the natural environment coming together, we’re yet to see it! After our paddle, we’ll have time to soak in the charm and beauty of San Giovanni.

Hotel Locanda della Maria, San Giovanni (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

    Kayaking: 12.9 kilometers (8 miles)

  • Day 10

    Back to Milan Malpensa

This morning we’ll head back to Milan in time for afternoon flights. If you’re staying on, our team is happy to offer you suggestions on how best to spend your time. Either way, you’ll go home relaxed and refreshed after the beautiful hiking, kayaking, and fine cuisine you’ll have taken in while exploring the Italian Lakes District.

"I had a great time on the Jaguar trip - our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, organized, and always helpful. Our porters and camp staff also were friendly and highly competent. The sites chosen by the guides for us to visit were always interesting, and the guides were able to provide great information about them. The information provided to us by Active Adventures was helpful and comprehensive - my only comments regarding the pre-trip information would be to update the materials to clarify that guests need a small day pack for biking and day hikes AND a 30L plus hiking bag for the Inca trail, and the pre-trip information could have included information about tipping for the porters and guides. While it is sensible that the company would not want to pressure guests into tipping a certain amount, everyone in my group had a wonderful time and genuinely wanted to show appreciation to our porters and guides. It would have been helpful to know how much cash we should have with us when departing on the trail to be able to tip each individual adequately, as well as information about when in the trip we would have an opportunity to tip both porters and guides. read less

"After having had my retirement bucket list trip snatched from under me in 2020, I was delighted to finally take it this April. Active Adventures deserves huge kudos for honouring its commitment to the trip. I travelled with two friends, and we were in a group of 15 on the trip - from the US and Canada. What a fantastic group of people! Best of all though, were our two tour guides from the Galapagos, Pepo and Paulo. They were the best ambassadors for the islands and Ecuador - very knowledgeable, professional, kind hearted - and just plain fun. They made us feel safe and relaxed throughout the trip. The islands are gorgeous - and the wildlife does not disappoint. I found deep ocean snorkelling a bit out of my comfort zone, and wished I had practiced a bit in a pool before I left. However, it is an essential part of the trip, and cannot be skipped. Learning about tectonic plates, volcanoes and the conservation efforts for the giant tortoises was food for thought. As for helpful tips, bring lots of sun screen, sun protective clothing, and bug spray. These items are not readily available on the islands, but they are absolutely essential. Also bring a reusable water bottle as recommended by AA, because although bottled water is available for purchase everywhere, it makes more sense to fill up from the large reusable containers provided and not create plastic waste. I would definitely recommend this beautiful active adventure - my first with this company, but not my last. read less

"To be honest, I was a little leery traveling with a new company, with new people and well, Covid. But this was abso-fricking-lutely the BEST ADVENTURE TRIP! From our guide, Pepo (who completely hit it out of the park), to the places we saw, to the organization behind the scenes and those wonderful meals, this was amazing! If you want the best way to SEE the Galapagos Islands, this is it. I can't say enough great things about Galakiwi (Active's partner) and our guides. They made this trip unforgettable. Pepo and Paolo answered our flora/fauna questions (we had lots!) and happily shared us what makes this place so special. And man, Pepo can dance - and surf! We're already talking about our next Active Adventure - we can't wait! :) read less

The walks were amazing, particularly around Lake Matheson and Punakaiki. "First “big” trip in 2 years due to the pandemic. Honestly, more anxiety than excitement prior to the trip but once I arrived in the Galapagos, the excitement hit and so glad my friend and I decided to go on the adventure together. AA tour made the trip really easy. I really like the balance of being “active” and some downtime of my own. The tour guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. The meals were all very good except for the first night dinner on San Cristobal Island…to me, it wasn’t good. I thought the fish weren’t well prepared and tasted too fishy. Another person ordered the same meal and I noticed she hardly touched hers. Later I found out hers was too salty. Another low light for me was the accommodations on Floreana Island. Apparently, very limited hotel selections on the island. Hotel Wittmer was ran down and we all had cold showers that night. I also found a smashed dead mosquito with blood on the wall! Isabela Island was fun and where we stayed was wonderful. I wish we had more time on Santa Cruz Island. All in all, I had a fantastic trip and would recommend this trip to my friends who enjoy the outdoor and animals! read less

We swam with sea turtles, rays, sea lions, and sharks!. The land tortoises were great to see in their natural habitat and in the breeding centers. I learned so much about the history of the islands, the environment, Darwin's studies and plans for the furture on the island. The snorkeling in Los Tunels was the highlight as well as the hike to the volcano lava fields. The Galapagos is truely a unique and fascinating place. read less

"The Condor trip and the W Trek were wonderful. I was there in early February and the weather was good; clouds mixed with sun, and surprisingly warm…but windy. The guides, as always, were special and took care of everything. The scenery is amazing, and constant for the entire 4+ days. The Argentina border was closed so the trip was modified to include the Chile Lake District, and I opted out of that portion of the trip because it was similar to the Active Adventures Puma trip which I did a couple years ago (also a great trip!). "I could write pages about our Tortuga trip in April . Instead I will just say that we were so surprised how much we enjoyed traveling with Active Adventures. We are typically not "group travel" people but in the Galapagos it seems many things to line up and local people and facilities to communicate with. AAdventures did this with amazing competency. Things flowed seamlessly. Our guide Pepo and his assistant Paolo were amazing. They seemed to do all this and yet still ENJOY being with us, answering questions and getting everyone excited for the next adventure. I will advise that this is an active trip, not intense but lots of exercise, sweating and moving every day. It is important to know that and be prepared or know that you might skip some of the longer things. I also want to add that the guides' English was beautiful and Pepo's knowledge about the area, the geography and the animals was impressive. To anyone who is worried about the "group" aspect but needs the logistics AAdventures can provide, be assured. They still respect your privacy, your right to skip something if its not for you and the small size makes it not feel chaotic. Food was also very good, fresh and simple but abundant and well prepared. I had dreamed of this trip since I was a little girl and read about the tortoises in National Geographic. I never thought the experience would live up to the dream, but it truly did and I think Active Adventures had a big part in that. read less

Useful Info

Where does the trip start?

If you arrive on the first day of your trip, we can either pick you up from the Hotel Holiday Inn Express at 10:30am or the Milan Malpensa airport (MXP) at 11am.

Where does the trip end?

Your trip ends with a drop-off at the Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) in time for flights below.

What flights would you recommend?

Arrival: We recommend arriving in Milan by 9am. Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to accommodate potential flight delays and/or explore the city prior to your trip start.

Departure: Flying out on the last day of the trip, we recommend departing from Milan after 1pm for both domestic and international. Earlier flight times will require a separate transfer booked at your own expense.

How fit do I need to be?

As an Activity Level 2-3 trip, you’ll need a good level of fitness for this trip. If you keep reasonably active and like to give things a go, you’re likely to enjoy the activities much more. Typically, hikes on this trip range between two and five hours to complete, with a few days of sea kayaking thrown into the mix. You should be in the habit of doing regular aerobic exercise, ideally involving some up hills, down hills and steps. With a little preparation you’ll enjoy the active and outdoor nature of your trip all the more.

Please head to our Fitness Guide for great tips on how to prepare along with a workout plan!

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travellers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travellers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travellers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.

What accommodations do we stay at on this trip?

We’ve selected the accommodation on this trip for the unique character and adventuresome feel – this trip is not designed as a tour of the fanciest hotels in Italy. We prefer to stay in quaint, comfortable B&B’s and lodges.

While there maybe opportunities to do laundry during the trip, if need be, they won’t be as convenient, and the best time
will be once we arrive to Stresa at Lago di Maggiore. Self-service laundries are rare, so you’ll probably need to use on-site hotel laundry services or off-site lavanderia’s, though we recommend hand-washing technical fabrics yourself.

How much luggage can I bring on this trip?

You'll need one piece of luggage plus a daypack. Your main piece of luggage can be anything from a backpack, to a sports bag with wheels or a suitcase and a good quality trekking daypack 25-30 litres (2000 cubic inches) is required for the days on the trail.

Is tipping expected in Europe?

Tipping is not expected in Europe however you might want to tip a little extra if you feel someone gave really fantastic service, but it's not really necessary. Many of our people also choose to tip their Active Adventures Europe trip leaders and local guides and we recommend USD$20 per day, per guest, per Trip Leader/guide, however less, more or not at all is also fine too.
