We love sharing details about lesser-known parts of our homeland, beautiful New Zealand. There is so much to see and experience! Here's what you could get up to on the spectacular West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. A place of exquisite rugged beauty, the West Coast has 370 miles of jagged coastline, acres of temperate coastal rainforest, ancient glaciers, and the Southern Alps as a backdrop. Let's discover the Wild West Coast!
Hiking and Biking the Wild West Coast
The West Coast is sparsely populated, and hiking and biking trails abound. Two of our favorites are the Paparoa Trail and the West Coast Wilderness Trail. The Pororari River Track (a section of the Paparoa Trail) takes you through lush rainforests and dramatic limestone cliffs, showcasing the diverse terrain.
Biking the West Coast Wilderness Trail is a great mix of stunning beauty and historic charm. You'll cycle through dense native bush, coastal areas, and stop off at quaint historic gold-mining towns along the way.

Kayak Tranquil Waters
Okarito Lagoon is New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland, surrounded by lush rainforest and stunning views of the Southern Alps. The best way to explore the lagoon — a nesting colony for the rare White Heron (known as Kōtuku in New Zealand's Māori language) — is by kayak, as you paddle over the inky, tranquil waters.

Discover Ancient Glacier Country
Hiking to a close-up view of Franz Josef Glacier — one of the few glaciers in the world that meets a temperate rainforest — is an unforgettable experience. You’ll feel like you’re walking through a postcard enjoying the icy blues of the glacier to the vibrant greens of the surrounding forest, and the crisp white, snow-capped mountains.

From the wild, untouched beaches of the coast to the unique rock formations shaped over thousands of year, the West Coast offers a range of landscapes to be explored. Hiking at Punakaiki, home to the iconic Pancake Rocks, offers a unique blend of stunning coastal views and fascinating geological formations. Wander along the rugged trails, where you can witness the power of the sea as waves crash against the rock layers. When the weather's wild, it's even more spectacular!
