Darren Hill

Active Adventures Travel Specialist

Darren at Machu PicchuDarren is originally from a small town on the west coast of Scotland called Ayr, close to where William Wallace was born. Prior to settling in New Zealand, he spent ten years living and travelling in Greece, Thailand, Cambodia, Canada, Australia and South America. He describes himself as an 'adventure travel nut' and regards South America as being right at the top of the list of adventure travel destinations. Darren recently returned to South America to visit the Galapagos Islands where he was blown away by the 'abundant and unique wildlife'. He likened his swimming with turtles to visiting Machu Picchu - both in their own way were 'dramatic, majestic and moving'.

Darren has travelled the world, but everyone still has something on their bucket list and for him that something is space travel. Watch this space...

Next time you speak to Darren, ask him about his golf handicap. His aim is to get down to single figures. He's at 11 right now so time will tell.

    Awesome Nepal!

What an amazing trip! Just the accomplishment of trekking all the way to Annapurna Base Camp is amazing, but the view when you get there puts it over the top!

Have to Experience it to Believe it

Don't know where to start and don't want to write a book but want anyone who is considering this trek to do it with Active Adventures. Why? I'm 62, still in good health and shape. Have experienced two other treks over the past ten years with other outfitters. Machu Picchu in Peru and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. There was a huge difference in personal care and attention to expedition details. What impressed me the most was the attention to every detail required to make this trek to Base Camp not only successful but an enjoyable one too. There was not one negative experience that Active Adventure was in control over (lodging, food, permits etc). My mind was put to ease every day when our daily heart rate and oxygen levels were tested and medication was made available to you should you experience the effects of altitude sickness. Our guide’s knowledge of the history and culture of the Nepalese people added to the enjoyment of our journey.

    Best trip ever!

Wonderful 30th anniversary trip to the Galapagos -- so glad we were able to explore these amazing islands. A true adventure for two biology majors! We really got a sense of the strong environmental preservation efforts underway there, and were in awe of the amazing land and sea creatures we encountered. Plus a terrific local guide and fun group of co-travelers made this a trip of a lifetime!

    Tui Trip

The Tui tour was the best trip I've ever had, all the group was great and very friendly, there was a very good feeling with all the group. It was so great to see all the nice places that you have in NZ, the tour passed so fast that I would love to do another one with you guys! And what about the super guides that we had - Jordy and Holly! They are the best ever, I would like to thank them again so much for the great time we had with them, I'm ready to do more! Holly next time we'll do the swimming race in the lake? Thanks a lot again, Ia orana from Tahiti.
