Matthew Yates

Active Adventures Travel Manager

Matthew, or 'Matty' as he's known leads our travel specialist team, drawing upon many years experience here at Active and in the travel industry. He balances his time between his joint passions of connecting with our guests to plan their trips of a lifetime, and helping to build the strategic vision for Active Adventures.

He came to New Zealand from the UK back in the 90s, back when it was cool to have the 'short back and sides' and everyone was listening to R.E.M. and Santana. We're painting a picture here – a young bloke looking for adventure, chasing the endless winters, and revelling in the Queenstown social scene.

His DJ career was ditched in favour of a series of entrepreneurial forays into the hospitality and print industries. His outdoors passion matured from reckless speed down a mountain on a snowboard to more sophisticated pastimes of fishing and tramping. Bradshaw, Nancy, Dagg and Doubtful – these are just some of the sounds Matty has explored with his brother-in-law on fishing and diving trips. Matty's crisscrossed the South Island both by foot and by road, and has travelled as far north as Northland at the top of New Zealand, home to our newest 'Kauri' trip. He has family in Okarito on the West Coast of the South Island, and a combination of beautiful coastline, white baiting and wonderful sunsets makes this hidden gem his favourite spot in New Zealand.

    Patagonia at its Best

This was a fantastic trip which was well planned with quality places to stay, eat, and view the wonders of Patagonia. The guides were all excellent and knowledgeable making the trip super informative. Other activities such as kayaking, glacier hike, and mountain biking added to the exploration of a very unique and diverse environment. The transportation from locations was very comfortable. The Patagonia of Chile and Argentina was stunning and the organization by Active Adventures created the perfect experience.

    It doesn't get much better!

What a fantastic time traveling with family and new-found friends! New Zealand is an absolutely beautiful country, with thrills and adventure around every corner (and there a lot of them)! Our guides Ken and Elder were as good as they come; from their knowledge of the country, to their welcomed encouragement on the trail and the water. Oh, and did I mention their wholesome and delicious cooking?!?
I would not hesitate to travel with Active Adventures again. Their organization, communication and willingness to please were simply over the top. Next year in Patagonia perhaps???

    Excellent NZ Adventures!

My Rimu Active Adventure trip exceeded my high expectations. The hikes, backpacking, kayaking, and cycling adventures were thrilling, fun, and beautiful. Luckily for our group, we had absolutely perfect weather every day of the trip! Dani and Hilary were tremendous guides who taught me a lot about Kiwi life. Highlights for me were the 3-day backpacking tramp in Nelson Lakes National Park to Angelus Hut and kayaking in Milford Sound. I appreciated that we mostly stayed in local lodges, hotels, inns. I recommend this trip to anyone who wants to truly explore the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand with wonderful friendly guides.
