Ruby Pook

New Zealand Guide

Ruby is a Kiwi, a North Islander who was born on the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington in the bottom half of the North Island. She lived there for 18 years until she move to Dunedin for university.

Ruby likes to get away most weekends and do something fun in the outdoors. In the summer you can find her tramping, camping, or kayaking around the beautiful New Zealand countryside discovering new places. In the winter Ruby will most likely be spending her time up the mountains snowboarding.

Do you have any special talents?

Tricky question..... I can make a 3 leaf clover with my tongue, and I can put my feet behind my head! Haha!

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?

I spent one week exploring Paradise in Mount Aspiring National Park with fellow PE students, we did some serious bush bashing and a long slog up Mount Alaska! We had camp fires every night and spent some nights sleeping under the stars.

Do you have a favourite quote?

Yes I have a few, Dr Seuss is too good to have to only choose one!

"You're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!" - Dr Seuss.

"Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one." - Dr Seuss.

Have you studied beyond school? If so in what?

I have just finished a Bachelors degree in Physical Education Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Otago in Dunedin.

    Worth every penny!

As someone who mostly travels independently, the thought of signing up for a two week organized group trip was rather intimidating but after reading all the reviews for Active, I thought I would give it a try... and I am so glad I did! Active Adventures made everything flow effortlessly- from the second I signed up until we were dropped of at the airport. The itinerary for the Condor trip is phenomenal, covering lots of different areas of Southern Patagonia and highlighting the most beautiful places. The W trek was one of the highlights of the trip and was even more enjoyable thanks to our guide, Cem, who was a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna and brought such a fun energy to the group. Additionally, our tour leader, Zac, had such a positive spirit, strong sense of humor and passion for his work that showed during our two weeks getting to know him. He was so well organized and made sure everything was lined up so we could relax and enjoy our downtime- including nailing a birthday dinner and cake! Would highly recommend this trip and organization to anyone in the future!

    Outstanding Trip!!

This trip was especially great because of our guides, Ben and Emma. I cannot say enough good things about those two. They were extremely patient, energetic, and very sincere.
The trip has a wide variety of activities that allowed us to see and experience most of the South Island, keeping us away from the more congested tourist hangouts. I really felt like we saw the true South Island and not just the tourist trap attractions.
The only reason I have not given it a 5 star rating is because my wife and I are very active and do very challenging trips that most people would never want to take on. It was not a trip of a lifetime for me only because of that. Take "trip of a lifetime" away from the 5 stars and just have excellent and I would mark that. Excellent trip!!!!

Excellent way to see New Zealand

My husband and I went on the Kauri trip in November 2017. This trip had been on our bucket list for a while and we decided to go with Active Adventures as they were offering the type of travel and activities we wanted to do in New Zealand. Our two awesome guides, Andy (encyclopedia of knowledge) and Jo (excellent cook) made us feel at home and have shown us the beautiful country of NZ while ensuring everyone had fun. We had an amazing time on the North Island and I highly recommend this trip if you enjoy outdoor activities.

    Ecuador

We had an amazing week in Ecuador. Each day was a new adventure, and the scenery was beautiful. The best part was Jhayro, our tour guide. He was knowledgable, personable, and genuine. We could tell that he wanted us to experience how special Ecuador is.

    Excellent NZ Adventures!

My Rimu Active Adventure trip exceeded my high expectations. The hikes, backpacking, kayaking, and cycling adventures were thrilling, fun, and beautiful. Luckily for our group, we had absolutely perfect weather every day of the trip! Dani and Hilary were tremendous guides who taught me a lot about Kiwi life. Highlights for me were the 3-day backpacking tramp in Nelson Lakes National Park to Angelus Hut and kayaking in Milford Sound. I appreciated that we mostly stayed in local lodges, hotels, inns. I recommend this trip to anyone who wants to truly explore the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand with wonderful friendly guides.
