Maya Ellery

New Zealand Guide

Maya is a South Island 'West Coaster', so most definitely a true local if you happen to have her as your guide as your explore the South Island with us. Having grown up in Greymouth, the wild outdoors of this region has shaped her interests, which include snowboarding, surfing, running and hiking. Like so many of our guides, Maya has spent the last few years travelling and also living abroad, in Australia and London.

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?
"I have two.. Spending the night camped on the side of a mountain and waking up to watch the sunrise over an erupting Volcano Fuego in Guatamala. Also hiking the Salkantay Trek in Peru, finishing at Machui Picchu. Both incredible!"

Do you have a favourite quote?
"Life is the greatest journey you will ever be on."

Testimonials

“Maya is so hard working, efficient and patient beyond measure. I would not have made it down from Angelus without her. I will forever be grateful for her encouragement, caring and genuine kindness.”
- Nanci Leigner (Chicago, Illinois, United States), Rimu April 2018

“Maya was a wonderful co-guide. She picked up quickly on our needs (coffee first thing in the morning) and always managed to keep us organized. She too had extensive knowledge and was always keen to give us information on anything and everything. ”
- Nancy Cooper (Oro-Medonte, Ontario, Canada), Rimu February 2018

“Maya is very friendly and encouraging! She is also very well organized and kept things running smoothly. Very good cook, too! We ate well when she was in the kitchen!”

A Deep Dive into the Understanding of the Maori Culture

Having just come from the South Trip we wondered if this trip would be more of the same. It was not. The landscape and activities were different and just as amazing. We learned so much about the history of the country, the Maori people, culture, and their language. The activities were varied and enabled us to experience the beauty of the North Island and all it has to offer.

    Kauri

I combined the Kauri trip, last 5 days, with the Tui trip on the South Island. I did not have enough time to do the full 11-day trip. I am really happy with my decision to do the last 5 days. Crossing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was an amazing experience! I loved everything about this trip... Andy and Jo were absolutely awesome!

    Fantastic trip

This was my first hiking trip, and I must say it was fantastic!!! Patagonia is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been (and I travel a lot). I want to mention that you have to be in reasonably good physical condition to enjoy this trip. I am glad that I trained for it. Arturo, our tour guide and Catherine (the W Trail guide) were excellent. They also made sure that they accommodated my dietary requirements (gluten, diary, and soy free) on the W Trail, which is not an easy task. I enjoyed every moment of the trip. I will definitely book another trip with Active Adventures, now that I know how much I enjoy hiking and active trips.

This trip exceeded every expectation. Every activity was more exciting than the last, never was there a dull moment. The hikes, especially the hike to Cape Brett and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, were absolutely incredible. Andy and Jo were the perfect team. Andy always kept us occupied with good stories and always had a backup plan if we weren't able to do something on the itinerary. He took the time on hikes to stop and point out unique things that otherwise would have been missed. "Mama Jo" really looked after us and made sure we all had the most amazing time. I have no idea where she found the energy to always be the one running back up the mountain to help carry the backpacks of tired hikers and then get back to the accommodations and cook everybody a delicious dinner. They were more than just tour guides, they were our family. I highly recommend this trip!
