New Zealand Guide
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in beautiful Fairbanks, Alaska. After high school, I moved quite a few times and lived in Hawaii, Maryland, and Colorado. I have finally found home in New Zealand at the bottom of the South Island!
What are your hobbies?
Anything outdoors! Day and multi-day hiking adventures and snowboarding are my favorites! I also love traveling and experiencing different cultures.
What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?
Rafting in remote Alaska! My parents would take me on a two week river trip every year until I was about 14. I loved being in remote regions of Alaska where you could only see bears and moose, it was always an adventure!
What did you do before you became a guide?
I got my bachelors degree in Nursing and worked as an emergency room nurse for 7 years. I loved the fast-paced and critical thinking environment. I worked in various emergency departments from an inner-city hospital in Baltimore to smaller hospitals in Colorado and Alaska. I took a break from ER nursing when I moved to New Zealand full-time and when I started my Masters in Global Health degree.
Do you have a favourite quote?
Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. - Dalai Lama
Describe a life experience that has shaped you today?
One life experience that has shaped my thinking and led me to pursuing a Masters in Global Health was flying into Nepal 3 days post the 2015 earthquake. I spent time in the villages of Active Adventures' Nepali guides and helped distribute emergency supplies and build temporary shelters. I have traveled back to Nepal multiple times since then, it is truly a magical place!
