Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Winton! A small town in Central Southland, 2200 people strong.

What are your hobbies?
Hobbies include everything outdoors, hiking, camping, surfing and getting into rock climbing recently! I enjoy reading in my down time and keeping up to date with New Zealand professional sport, particularly Rugby and Cricket.

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?
I spent seven days in the wilderness at the end of my second year of university. It was an amazing experience that opened me up to the outdoors and all their beauty!

What did you do before you became a guide?
I was a pest exterminator helping rid New Zealand of introduced predators, possums in particular. Ask me all about it!

Have you studied beyond school? If so in what?
I studied a Bachelor of Physical Educationat Otago University.

“Kaleb was excellent in all respects despite being new to AA guiding this season. We enjoyed him thoroughly.”
- David Miller (Wayzata, Minnesota, United States), Rimu January 2019

“Kaleb was so much fun! He was always positive, able to answer all of our questions, made sure everyone felt a part of the group, and always ensured we were all having a great experience. He was a great driver, making sure “Kate” got us to and from each location safely. He also taught me how to do a “Tim Tam” slam, a small detail but something I’ll always remember. Overall a terrific lead guide!”
- Kevin Bui (Dover, New Hampshire, United States), Rimu October 2018

“Oh Kaleb, I wish we could clone you. You were sweet, funny, so full of knowledge about plants, birds, New Zealand culture and history. When everyone was overdressed for the biking trip, you carried all of our jackets. Who does that? Your smile comes from deep within you and it’s so genuine.”
- Terri Krawietz (San Antonio, Texas, United States), Tui November 2018

    Winter Rimu to Remember

Coming from a small island which is tropical year around, I didn't expect to have a wonderful winter experience. We had amazing adventures all around the southern island from hikes, kayaking, and food. Everything was well planned out. Even when obstacles with the weather occurred, their alternate plans were just as amazing! Mel and Gary were our guides. These two are the best in each their own. They both displayed great hospitality and patience. I've learned so much about New Zealand while trekking with a great company. Overall, I would return to New Zealand to do more adventures.

South Island trip of a lifetime

An absolutely awesome adventure with fantastic guides Vanessa and Tory. Experiencing parts of the great tramps in New Zealand of Kepler, Routeburn, Mueller Hut, Inland pack track at Punakaiki and Angelus Hut are a great introduction to tramping in NZ. I will definitely be back to complete some of the tramps. The Angelus hut hike was one of the hardest I have done (I hike regularly in Western Australia) and I loved every second of it. I would do the Angelus hut Nelson lakes hike again in a heart beat. The cycle along the Hawea river was stunning. Every day was a highlight of the trip.

    Can't believe I did it

Right when we touched down at Lukla airport, I began to get sick. I didn't think there would be any way that I could continue, but my guides were well-prepared with medicine and advice to help get me back on track, and they let me walk at my own pace. Mercifully, I rebounded and made it through some of the most stunning hiking that you can do anywhere on earth. Everyone in my group was positive and a joy to be around.

The Best Way to Spend my 30th Birthday!

Going to New Zealand has been at the very top of my bucket list for quite a long time and I finally decided to scratch it off when I turned 30. Active Adventures was, from the beginning, the only tour group I would consider travelling with. They were the only group that not only had everything I wanted to do in New Zealand, but also had the highest level of professionalism and ratings that made me trust them.
From the moment they picked us up at the airport I was certain I’d judged them correctly. Tess was simply an amazing tour guide (we called her mum because that’s exactly how we felt about her) not only was she fun, she took care of us, fed us, and kept us organized. Andy supplemented the tour with such interesting history and facts that I felt like I was on a school trip (in a good way!).
All in all it was an amazing vacation, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it!
Thank you Active Adventures for making my 30th the year to remember!
