Clara Gyllensten

New Zealand Guide

Clara was born and raised on the South West coast of Sweden, on a small island called Bohus-Björkö and speaks fluent English and Swedish. She spends her free time hiking, camping, enjoying bonfires on a beach, riding mountain bike parks, surfing and sailing.

What has been your greatest outdoor adventure to date? – “I was born terribly curious of this world so I started traveling and exploring as soon as I could. After a bit of Globetrotting I stumbled upon New Zealand and my jaw dropped to the ground. It's just epic, I tried to leave but it didn't work, so now I am a very proud permanent resident. My passion for hiking I found when I came to New Zealand five years ago and started climbing volcanoes on the north island. The feeling when you get to the summit is just unbeatable. One of my favourite New Zealand adventures is most definitely the Tongariro crossing, it's such a mysterious and magical place to explore.”

Favourite quote? – "Don't rush through now to get to later"

Testimonials

“Clara was always smiling and supportive. If we said we liked a certain type of food (ie. salty vs sweet), inevitably some kind of salty treat was offered the very next day. She was very attentive in ensuring that the group didn't get separated if someone lagged behind and was always patient....we take photos....lots of photos! Her big strength on our trip was her skill with providing delicious and varied picnic lunches, lovely and diverse meals as well as always having healthy snack choices available. Also, if we asked her a question and she didn't have the answer, she researched it and gave us an answer as soon as possible thereafter. She too is an 8 out of 7 in her role.”

“Also absolutely perfect. Professional, organized, knowledgeable, super servie oriented all wrapped up in fun and laughter. I could not have asked for better guides and I have had many guided trips. These guys are the best and you are lucky to have them represent your company.”
- Bob Hill (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada), Manuka January 2017

“Caring, kind, great cook. So good that our 20-something daughter was afraid we would dump her and adopt Clara (Ha).”

    A Fantastic trip

This is the best way to tour South Island of New Zealand. Enjoy the spectacular views, experience the first hand of back country and meet the physical challenges. With small group of people and two dedicated guides, what else one ask for?

    South Island Rimu Trip

My South Island trip was outstanding, even with the cyclone that came ashore on the second day! The itinerary needed to be changed because of all the washed out roads to places that we were suppose to venture to. Our guides, Jackie and Carrie, came up with new plans that were great. A mark of a good company is when they can handle unexpected events, such as a cyclone, and still provide their guest with a trip of a life time. Thank you A.A. for a great and safe trip!

    Amazing Adventure

what an amazing adventure we had! we enjoyed every bit of our Jaguar trip and would recommend Active Adventures to anyone who asks! The trip was very well organized and the guides were all informative and amazing. Our main guide, Erick Farfan was the best! he always made sure everything ran smoothly and had to deal with many different personalities on this trip but made it all work. The Inka trail was a tough trail for me due to the altitude but what an amazing feeling once you complete it and arrive at the sun gate! We thoroughly enjoyed the jungle as well as the visit to lake titicaca and our local family that we stayed with. look forward to our next amazing adventure with you! Hoping to do Patagonia soon!

    Challenging and Fun!

My trip to Argentina and Chile was more than I imagined it would be. I was in awe of the natural beauty of the areas we hiked in. However, the most important thing I take home with me is the personal relationships I formed with my group, especially my leader, and now friend, Mayra Callo. She was amazing. I am a "beginner hiker" so her patience and close attention on the harder treks was appreciated! She knew so much about the area and it was a pleasure learning about South America from her. In addition, her personality made all of us feel like family, with Mayra being the Mother :) She took great care of all of us. We all had so much fun together...it was sad to leave. Anyone who has any reservations about booking a trip should just do it! They won't be disappointed!!

    Better than expected

I had done one group tour before and lots of hiking with my local hiking club, but this tour was beyond what I was expecting. The people, the guide, the coordination and logistics - all were fantastic and well done. Of course, what truly made the trip was the amazing location and breathtaking adventure.
