Carrie Hodges
New Zealand Guide
Carrie was born and raised in sunny Dunedin, and moved to Christchurch at the age of 18 to study. She's a very keen runner, surfer, cyclist, hiker, and cook. She also enjoys rogaine (like orienteering but time limited!). Before she became a guide for Active Adventures Carrie worked as a Land Surveyor, and before that, at Land Information New Zealand as a Property Rights Analyst.
What has been your greatest outdoor adventure?
Hiking to Everest Base Camp. It was really cool to be in the highest mountain range in the world, walk on glaciers as they creak beneath you, and see the way people live so high up in the mountains. The scenery is also pretty spectacular, I would advise anyone to go!
Describe a life experience that has shaped you today?
When I was 16 I was lucky enough to go to Outward Bound. It was the first time I really got to experience outdoor pursuits, and get out of my comfort zone. Since then I have been more confident to try out new things, and have only grown to love the outdoors even more.
Have you studied beyond school? If so in what?
Yeah, I dabbled in an Art Certificate, and then an Outdoor Recreation Certificate. I finally got serious and did a BSc in Geology and Geography at Canterbury University. I now know some good rock facts!
Do you have a favourite quote?
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” - Dr Seuss.
Testimonials
"I want to praise both Dan and Carrie for pulling the whole trip together into two enjoyable weeks. With only three guests on the trip we all got very personalized attention from the guides, which led to quick bonding and I'd like to think I made new friends."
Bill Freeman (California, USA) November 2017 "We had the most fantastic guides, Claire, Nat, and Carrie! They made a wonderful trip even more spectacular.Every detail was planned and thought out. Delicious meals they prepared, restaurants ready for us on our arrival, surprise stops on our route, the music, the stories and preparing us to safely enjoy an adventure of a lifetime!"

Trip Reviews
Exceeded all expectations
Our Rimu trip truly exceeded all expectations. Our Active guides, Rachael and Gary were wonderful guides with so much knowledge to share with us about the New Zealand culture, wildlife, history, and geography that we encountered along the way. This was truly an adventure of a lifetime that my son and I will always treasure.
