CanWell, Phil and I have been in Canada for just over a week now and tomorrow we’re heading south to Seattle. The week started off with a bit of exploring around Vancouver – we grabbed bikes to cruise around Stanley Park, which is an awesome way to see the sights, and the public transport system is also amazing.
We met with our friends at Down Under Travel Vancouver to tell them about all the cool stuff happening at Active, and of course we also hiked the Baden Powell Track from Lynn Canyon to Grouse Mountain. In fact, we were enjoying it so much we actually took a side trip to hike up to Grouse! I think Phil had one eye over his shoulder the entire hike expecting a black bear to jump out from behind a tree – all the dogs had bells and apparently bears do start coming down at this time of year, but it would have been very unusual to see one on this trail which had plenty of hikers and bikers.
On Tuesday we took the incredibly scenic journey north to Whistler to attend the Mountain Travel Symposium. Everyone in Vancouver was telling us there was no snow, and compared to previous years they were right, but when we got a chance to explore the mountain we were still blown away by the quality of the trails that still had decent snow (the entire top 3rd of the mountain). We were lucky enough to get some fresh snow too, with the locals saying the conditions were the best they’d been all year. April is an awesome time to visit Whistler, with the longer days, warm weather and the ski and snowboard festival with live music and lots of other exciting events. The symposium was really great and a chance for Phil and I to meet with ski and adventure clubs from around North America. I think we’ll be sharing our favourite New Zealand hikes and our craft beers with some of these clubs in the near future!
Highlights so far?
- Super friendly Canadians
- Hiking a stone’s throw from ecclectic Vancouver
- Craft beer – Canadians no longer just drink Kokanee!
- Meeting a fascinating bunch of people at MTS.
After picking up our RV, we’ll be meeting REI and Down Under Answers and on Wednesday April 22nd we’ll be hosting an evening at the Adventure Hub in Seattle. Everyone is welcome, it’ll be a fun night! If you’d like to attend, send me an email – email@example.com
