One of the questions we get asked every once in a while, is what is it, that makes the Ultimate South Island Adventure ‘Rimu’ trip so special? Our Signature ‘Rimu’ trip is no ordinary adventure; it’s been hand-crafted to perfection over the past twenty years! We’re not kidding when we say there’s a list a mile long as to why we think you’ll be pretty chuffed after experiencing the REAL New Zealand on this 14-day adventure.

Now we’re not just talking a little hike up a hill and a splash around in the sea, we’re talking swimming with seals, hiking the grandiosity of the Angelus Circuit, walking unspoilt pristine beaches and disengaging with everyday reality to embrace the tall dense rainforests. We’ll make sure to tailor each day’s adventure to your ability and along the way you’ll make lifelong friends who share a kindred spirit; revelling in New Zealand’s natural beauty and quirky culture.

Cristina Negrea reflected on her ‘Rimu’ trip as “Amazing”, and here’s why:
So what drives people to absolutely ‘rave’ about the ‘Rimu’? And believe us, there are lots of ravers! People come to New Zealand expecting scenery that’ll knock their socks off, and that’s just what they get. But what they don’t always expect is to forge such incredible friendships with guides and other group members. Our expert Kiwi guides know what pushes people’s buttons and deliver a level of personalised service and attention to detail that is next to none. After two weeks, guides and clients are like family and that’s not an exaggeration.

So let’s start with the word AMAZING and break it down:
Angelus Circuit – this is New Zealand’s wilderness at its best. Nestled in the Nelson Lakes National Park, a favourite amongst the locals and very peaceful and tranquil. A rewarding hike takes you to the high alpine tarn of Lake Angelus, which on a crystal clear day is so still and silent you’d swear you’re the only person for hundreds of miles. Don’t coy away at the idea of physical exertion being met, our experienced guides will tailor this part of your adventure to suit your level of fitness.

Zen – This is nature in control, and Mother Earth at her best. At Punakaiki you’ll see the landscape for all its glory, with nature showing you its power and grandeur. You’ll hear her hiss, and heave, rhythmically blended with the sound of the ocean. Spouts of salt water rise through the large rock formations stacked like maple syrup pancakes. The Punakaiki rainforest will present you with another level of energy, the greenery surrounding giving you a feeling of abundance. The green shades found in this area are even known to lower anxiety! There is one particular day, where if you’re lucky, you’ll experience sunrise at Roberts Ridge in the Nelson Lakes National Park and then sunset on the West Coast at Punakaiki. As the sun sleeps over the Tasman sea you’ll feel a deeper connection with nature, which is present right here, right now.

Glow Worms – When you walk into the Punakaiki caverns you’ll be greeted by thousands of these tiny little creates, radiating luminescent light. The rainforest surrounding Punakaiki will make you feel like you’re in The Lord of Rings; an Orc or Hobbit might pop out at any time!

Ice – Whilst you hike through the forest to either Alex Knob or Roberts Point, you’ll experience unbelievable views of the ice formations of the Franz Joseph Glacier. If you decide to take the heli-hike option, don’t worry we’ll kit you out in the appropriate gear, ice axes, crampons… the works. Take a step back in time and see up close the expansion of polar ice sheets on an alpine glacier.

Milford Sound – Breath-taking scenery, words simply cannot describe what you will feel (inside and out) after sea kayaking Milford Sound. The friendly seals and dolphins create a wealth of calmness when you’re paddling through the Sound. As the explorer James Hingston wrote, “For thousands of feet upwards the eye looks upon straight cut rock frontages, not worn smooth by time, or by wind or water, but as sharply defined and fresh looking in all respect as if riven asunder but yesterday by the stupendous wedges of Titanic Masons.”

Aoraki Mount Cook – The last night of your ‘Rimu’ trip will be spent at Braemar Station, with drinks and dinner to celebrate the accomplishments of your journey thus far. As you sit back and unwind under the star-studded sky, the eyes of Aoraki Mount Cook stare back across the shimmering milky-blue waters of Lake Pukaki.
Taking you on this journey would be our pleasure. To help others experience an adventure like no other gives us more satisfaction than you would believe. Most importantly the pure joy of your lasting impression of New Zealand will truly make you want to do the trip all over again!
